Kim Bo-kyung and Ki Sung-yueng have a lot in common. Less than a year apart in age and close friends off the field, they each moved to South Wales within six weeks of each other in the summer of 2012 and were instrumental in South Korea’s bronze medal at the 2012 Olympics, which resulted in National Service exemption.

As far as their respective careers are concerned though, the similarities end there.

Kim arrived at Cardiff as part of a huge post-rebrand spending spree, tasked with providing the ammunition to fire an assault on automatic promotion.

He certainly played his part, pulling the strings on occasion, plus chipping in with goals in wins at Blackburn and Blackpool, as Malky Mackay’s side romped to the title.

With great feet, Kim is undoubtedly technically gifted, but had a tendency to decorate games rather than directly influence them.

Blackburn rovers confirm interest

Bowyer said: “Kim Bo is a quality player and somebody we saw play ever so well for Wigan last season.

“In the situation that we’re in, when quality players like him become available on a free transfer then we’ve certainly to got to put our hat in the ring.

“But obviously we know that there are certainly going to be other clubs interested in him and we’ve just got to make sure that we’re fighting to try to get his signature.

“It’s ongoing but he’s a fantastic player and he would be somebody that we would love to have in our ranks.”

FA new rules kick in

BLACKBURN Rovers’ attempts to sign Kim Bo-Kyung are over after the South Korea star was refused a work permit.

The 25-year-old had agreed personal terms with Rovers and had been training alongside Gary Bowyer’s squad at Brockhall.

But Kim, who is a free agent after turning down a new longer-term contract at Wigan Athletic, will now have to look for a club away from England after he fell victim of the Football Association’s new toughened-up work permit rules.

Loaned out? He's not contracted to any clubs at the moment.

And LOL at moving to a mid-table Cypriot team. Moving to APOEL (remember their miraculous run in the Champions League a few years back?) might make sense but any other team than that?

He's very unlucky, I have to say.. Pretty sure he would've been successful if he were to play under good managers.. He was talented once but his form is fked up now........

I'd think it's a legal loophole to try to bypass FA rules.

BLACKBURN Rovers did all they could to sign Kim Bo-Kyung.

That was the verdict of managing director Derek Shaw after the club’s attempts to complete a deal for the South Korea star were thwarted on Thursday when the FA rejected an appeal to grant him a work permit...

Shaw said: “With the legal advice of our lawyers we knew that it would be very doubtful.

“But if Kim had gone to another Championship club, and got a work permit because of his previous employment in the UK, we would have been extremely criticised for not having a go.

“We’ve had a go, it’s cost us in lawyer’s fees, and it’s cost us in (setting up) the FA panel, but we’ve had a go for the right reasons because Kim is a very good footballer and we’re very disappointed we’ve not got him.”
