I was surprised at first but you explained well ... Cruijff had a "difficulty" in English and he always said "YOU" (instead of we or me ,...) that would annoy the ref ... haha
He also uses 'you' very often in his native language. He speaks none of the languages very well, including his own language, but he can express himself in English, Spanish, German and French. Here pictures of another game against PSV, the friendly on 19/05/1974: http://www.sportgeschiedenis.nl/2006/05/17/barcelona-en-cruijff-in-1974.aspx I will make an overview with the assists I was able to find before I move on to my next project, the assists of Laudrup. Regarding 1977/1978: maybe Vegan10 can shed light on a few more assists but the ones I listed are the ones I'm sure about. Vegan also uses slightly wider criteria ('modern' criteria).
This are the assists I have: Ajax 24 assists against domestic top five sides in the 1964-1973 period for Ajax (65 games) [incomplete for 64-67] 18 assists in European matches for Ajax (1966-1973 & 1982/1983 season) (49 games) 10 assists in international friendlies [incomplete] 1 assist in domestic cup finals 64-73 (against non top five sides) (2 games) 2 assists in European Super Cup (2 games) 2 assists in Intercontinental Cup (2 games) 20 league-assists in 1981-1983 period (36 games) [miss one game] 3 cup-assists in 1981-1983 (8 games) Barcelona 1973/1974 La Liga: 26 games – 16 goals + 14 assists Friendlies: 11 games – 8 goals + 8 assists Total: 37 games – 24 goals + 22 assists 1974/1975 La Liga: 30 games – 7 goals + 12 assists EC-1: 8 games – 0 goals + 6 assists Friendlies: 13 games – 7 goals + 6 assists Total: 51 games - 14 goals + 24 assists 1975/1976 La Liga: 29 games – 6 goals + 11 assists UEFA Cup: 9 games – 2 goals + 2 assists Friendlies: 10 games – 3 goals + 1 assist Total: 48 games – 11 goals + 14 assists 1976/1977 La Liga: 29 games - 13 goals + 13 assists UEFA Cup: 7 games - 5 goals + 4 assists Friendlies: 11 games - 6 goals + 5 assists Total: 47 games - 24 goals + 22 assists 1977/1978 Primera Division: 25 games, 5 goals, 7 assists, 1 penalty-assist, 1 free-kick assist UEFA Cup: 10 games, 5 goals (1 PK), 1 assist, 2 penalty-assists Copa del Rey: 7 games, 1 goal, 3 assists, 2 penalty-assists Friendlies: 3 games, 0 goals, 1 assist NASL 37 assists in 55 games (official NASL games) Feyenoord 18 assists in 33 league-games in 1983/1984 season [miss one game] 2 assists in cup matches (7 games) [miss one game] 2 assists in international friendlies (5 games) [miss one game] National team 26 assists for the National Team in official games (48 games)
Total amount of assists known excluding club friendlies: Ajax: 70 Barcelona: 73 NASL: 37 Feyenoord: 20 National team: 26 Total: ~226 assists in official matches
Keep in mind that I miss a fair chunk of his first stint at Ajax: the league games outside the top five and the cup matches. I also miss some match-info about top five games in the 64-67 era. If I have to make a guess I think he had close or slightly over 300 assists in official games.
Puck, in the match against ADO 10-01-65 (5-1) Cruyff had 1 assist (to the 5th goal, by Petersen). Here is the detailed report - http://denhaag.x-cago.com/vw/page.do?id=HS-19650111-014
29-11-64 against Feijenoord (4:9) of four Ajax' goals the first and the second were assisted by Nuninga, the third was scored solo by Swart. I do not know only the fourth assisters (to the goal of Nuninga)
How do you read them? I can't. It says that one should go to the archives. How did you find the source?
Thanks for the source. About the earlier mentioned June 1964 youth tournament, where he was elected player of the tournament, he played with his team against Dynamo Zagreb in the final. Ajax won 3:0. Cruijff played interestingly as right-winger and had a goal + assist.
As for the match 11-01-84 Glasgow Rangers - Feyenoord 3:3 Hiele, Nielsen, Troost, van de Korput, Wijnsteckers, Carbo (van Tiel, 35), Gullit, Staffleu, Houtman (Jeliazkov, 46), Cruijff (Been, 61), Brard Goals: 1' (17-th second), 10', 56' (pen) - 12' Gullit, 32' Carbo (assist - Cruijff), 52' Cruijff (assist - Brard)
Hello, Sorry for late reply but he did play. It was a friendly before WC78 qualifier against Northern-Ireland on 13/10/1976. He played in the qualifier but Barcelona did not release him on time and did not give permission to play in any other game.
Puck, you've said 'he did play' but from your answer it is clear that he did not play... So, he DID play or he did NOT play?
This is the source you sent me in a PM http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=GGgVawPscysC&dat=19840112&printsec=frontpage&hl=en On page 18.
I will try to lighten up as much as possible Cruyff’s NASL-period. 1979 – Los-Angeles Aztecs Before Cruyff’s arrival Aztecs played 7 matches, 5 (all home) won – 1:0, 1:0, 2:1, 3:1, 1:0 – and 2 (both as guests) lost – 0:4 and 0:3. 551. 23/05/1979 --- Aztecs – Rochester Lancers 3:0 [2] Before this match Cruyff even did not see his team-mates. No friendlies with them, no trainings. He stayed up straight 28 hours on his way from Amsterdam to L-A. He played 70 minutes and scored 2 goals – 3’ (with left foot from 25 yards) and 7’ (with right foot from 29 yards). The third goal was by van Veen. 552. 26/05/1979 --- Atlanta Chiefs – Aztecs 2:5 At 22’ the score was 2-0. Then – 28’ diBernardo (Cruyff - preassist), 35’ Suurbier, 72’ van Veen and 2 goals by Wagner during last 5 minutes (both assists – van Veen). Cruyff was subbed out at 55’. As for Cruyff’s preassist – the NASL often attributed to a goal 2 assisters as NHL does. So his preassist was counted as assist 553. 30/05/1979 --- New England Tea Men – Aztecs 1:0 The only goal was scored in 74’ 554. 02/06/1979 --- Aztecs – Portland Timbers 5:1 [1] Cruyff scored in 23’ and assisted to van Veen 1 minute later and was subbed out at 55'. Dangerfield scored 2 goals and gave pass to the 1st goal by Hubert Smeets 555. 09/06/1979 --- Aztecs – California Surf 3:2 (2:2, overtime 1:0) [1] Surfers scored in the 1st minute from the penalty spot. The 2nd minute – goal by Cruyff. 73’ – Surfers are one goal ahead. 81’ Sibbald 2-2 (assist – Cruyff from a free kick). The regular time ended with 2-2 but in the NASL there were not draws, and after 90 minutes there were 2 overtimes – 7 and half minutes each until one team would score a goal – sudden death. That was the case – in the 2nd minute of the overtime van Veen scored – thus 3-2 Aztecs won 556. 13/06/1979 --- San Diego Sockers – Aztecs 4:3 (NOT 3:4!!!) (3:3, 2 overtimes 0:0, shoot-outs 4:3)[1] Cruyff scored in 55’ (a header from a cross by Rongen) and did 1 assist (to Dangerfield in the 1st minute). I do not know if he take a shoot-out kick. 557. 16/06/1979 --- Aztecs – Detroit Express 3:1 Goals: 26’ Cary (-), 63’ van Veen (Sibbald), 77’ Wagner (Cruyff) – 52’ 558. 20/06/1979 --- Toronto Blizzard – Aztecs 4:3 (3:3, 2nd overtime 1:0) The first goal of Aztecs – Rongen, the second – in 63’ Dangerfield (Cruyff), the third – in 66’ van Veen (converted the rebound after Cruyff’s shot). The winner goal of TB came in 102’ 559. 23/06/1979 --- Tulsa Roughnecks – Aztecs 2:0 Goals: 25’, 45’ 560. 27/06/1979 --- Dallas Tornado – Aztecs 2:3 (2:2, 1st overtime 0:1)[1] Goals: 14’, 48’ – 11’ van Veen (penalty, caused by Smeets), 44’ Cruyff, 95’ Wagner (Cruyff) Both goals of Dallas were scored by Willie Lippens. The day before the match he said to a Dallas newspaper that he does not think that Cruyff the best footballer in the World. “Beckenbauer or Pele may be”. He said that they were better men than Cruyff, that he was not a very good man 561. 30/06/1979 --- Aztecs – Washington Diplomats 2:3 (2:2, 2nd overtime 0:1) Hubert Smeets took 2 penalties – 4’ (scored) and 85’ (missed). In 80’ Rongen scored 2:1 (Cruyff assisted from a corner-kick). But one minute later the score was 2:2. The match-winner for WD came in 101’ 562. 04/07/1979 --- Aztecs – Atlanta Chiefs 1:0 (NOT 2:1!!!) [1] The only goal was scored by Cruyff from 25 yards in 57’ 563. 07/07/1979 --- San Diego Sockers – Aztecs 2:1 (1:1, 2nd overtime 1:0) Goals: 86’, 104’59’’ (one second before the shoot-outs!) – 55’ Rongen (Cruyff (his 9th official assists (that is I think it sums up his assists and preassists))) 564. 11/07/1979 --- Vancouver Whitecaps – Aztecs 0:1 [1] Goal: 27’ Cruyff (Rongen, Sibbald) 565. 14/07/1979 --- San José Earthquakes – Aztecs 1:0 (NOT 1:3!!!) (0:0, 2 overtimes 0:0, shoot-outs 3:1) Aztecs’ shoot-outs: Cruyff (missed), van Veen (missed), Cary (scored) 566. 17/07/1979 --- Aztecs – Dallas Tornado 2:1 Goals: 19’ van Veen (diBernardo (preassist), Cruyff (assist)), 87’ van Veen (Wagner) – 84’ 2 yellow cards and 1 red card were given to DT-players for fouls on Cruyff 567. 20/07/1979 --- Edmonton Drillers – Aztecs 4:3 Goals: 5’, 39’, 44’, 58’ – 53’ Smeets (Cruyff), 63’ Smeets (van Veen), 77’ Wagner (Cruyff) 568. 27/07/1979 --- Rochester Lancers – Aztecs 2:1 [1] Goals: 25’, 45’ – 7’ Cruyff In 88’ Cruyff shot against the post from a free-kick (NOTE: look at the minutes of goals – ain’t it funny!? 559. 23/06/1979 --- Tulsa Roughnecks – Aztecs 2:0 Goals: 25’, 45’ 568. 27/07/1979 --- Rochester Lancers – Aztecs 2:1 [1] Goals: 25’, 45’ – 7’ Cruyff) 569. 29/07/1979 --- Washington Diplomats – Aztecs 1:2 Goals: 11’ Rongen, 26’ van Veen (Cruyff) 2 defenders of Aztecs (including Suurbier) were subbed out due to injuries and last 20 minutes Cruyff played as stopper 570. 01/08/1979 --- Aztecs – New York Cosmos 1:3 Goals: 58’ Smeets (Shelton) – 25’, 77’, 81’ In 51’ van Veen missed penalty 571. 04/08/1979 --- Aztecs – Vancouver Whitecaps 2:0 [1] Goals: 26’ Cruyff (free-kick), 36’ Dangerfield 572. 07/08/1979 --- Aztecs – Seattle Sounders 7:1 [2] Goals: 17’ van Veen (Cruyff), 36’ Dangerfield (Galindo), 61’ Cruyff (-), 67’ Dangerfield (Sibbald, Millinger), 71’ van Veen (Cruyff), 83’ Cruyff (penalty), 85’ Dangerfield (-) – 60’ (penalty) 573. 12/08/1979 --- Portland Timbers – Aztecs 1:3 (NOT 3:1!!!) [1] Goals: 32’ – Cruyff (converted the rebound after corner-kick of Dangerfield), 78’ Rongen (converted the rebound off the crossbar after Dangerfield’s shot), 89’ Wagner (Cruyff) Play-offs 574. 15/08/1979 --- Aztecs – Washington Diplomats 3:1 [quarter] Goals: 64’ Dangerfield, 78’ Smeets (Cruyff from a free-kick), 87’ Smeets Голы: 9’04’’ (пен, Сурбир), 86’14’’ – 14’55’’ Дангерфилд, 21’47’’ ванВеен (Кройфф, Дангерфилд), Дангерфилд, 97’17’’ Кройфф (соло)’ 575. 19/08/1979 --- Washington Diplomats – Aztecs 3:4 (3:3, 1st overtime)[1] [quarter] The regular time ended with 3:3. In 10’ 1-0 (penalty for a foul of Suurbier). Then 15’ Dangerfield and 22’ van Veen (Cruyff, Dangerfield) made 1-2. One more goal from Dangerfield and 2 goals of WD made it 3:3. In the end of the 1st overtime Cruyff made a solo-run from the centre of field and scored. It was 98’ and only 13 seconds left to play before the 2nd overtime 576. 22/08/1979 --- Aztecs – Vancouver Whitecaps 3:2 (2:2, 2 overtimes 0:0, shoot-outs) [semi] Goals: 72’ Smeets (Galindo), 87’ Sibbald (Wagner) – 29’, 67’ Shoot-outs: Cruyff, Wagner and Morrison converted for Aztecs 577. 25/08/1979 --- Vancouver Whitecaps – Aztecs 2:0 (1:0, mini-match 1:0) [semi] The own goal of Galindo in 68’ made it 1-0 for Vancouver in the regular time. As far as it was play-off, it was up to mini-match and not to overtimes to decide who would go further. The rule of sudden death goal did not work here. Vancouver scored in 94’ and Aztecs had 26 minutes to score but they failed Cruyff was MVP of the NASL season.
