Mostly garbage. Kuper attributes some very odd things to Cruijff:

Introducing a culture of quarreling, really? The social changes of the sixties introduced the anti authoritarian streak in Dutch society and footballers started to realize they had valuable trade skills.

Cruijff also said, "quality without results is pointless, but results without quality is boring" so I can't agree that he didn't care about winning, just not any cost.

Kuper also missed that Dutch football couldn't compete internationally before the 1960s because of a lack of a professional league.

Dutch soccer brought low because Cruijff underestimated the need for power in football... That one made me laugh. I guess Kuper never heard of the Bosman ruling and the impact of pay television on football. Also Barcelona sure loves to out muscle the competition.:D

Paul Breitner has said he's still sorry for what happened at the farewell game in 78 when Bayern came to play a friendly vs Ajax. When they came on the field they were called nazis and spit at so he told the team "my dear colleagues, we will deliver a new sensation to world football today: we will not just run for 30, 60 minutes like there's no tomorrow but for 90." When they were up 4-0 he told his team mates to slow it down a bit but Gerd Müller said no way and in the end they won 8-0. They even man-marked Johan. Today hes really sorry about this cause they were pros and Johan clearly deserved better.

  3. He also missed that Dutch club soccer from the moment of professionalism was a super power in the making starting with Feyenoord's famous semi final encounters with Benfica and it didnot start in 1974. He also keeps on attributing the rise of the total football story to Rinus Michels while he was copying Ernst Happel's 4-3-3 forced by Johan, the only one at Ajax who truly understood the brilliance of Ernst Happels invention.
I tried to find something that shows he has any notion on Dutch club soccer before the WC of 1974, especially the role of Ernst Happel in it. Nothing.
He has a myopia in that respect.

Piet Keizer also understood, but yes Happel deserves as much recognition as Michels for putting Dutch football on the map. Total football is a nice catchphrase, but in reality the way the NT played in 74 was the result of years of development in Dutch club football. Technical refinement, 4-3-3, pressing, the off side trap, sweeper keepers, and positional interchanges it all added up.

  5. You are right about Pietje. Probably my Coentje bias that made me forget his influence in Ajax.

  6. Just because the players of Ajax and less so from Feyenoord were not interested in national team football we werenot present at the WC1966 and 1970. If they were so we already would have demolished the world in those 2 tournements. We did it on a club level for years in that period, and probably be the only country to have lost 5 WC finals:(

Can you happen to share the link for the Paul Breitner interview?

He did pretty well in his own farewell match... Individually

That's absolutely true. The now famous 4-3-3 was forced by Vasovic and Cruijff on him (maybe Groot as well in a peripheral sense, as senior-player). From 'week 1' of his tenure Michels had also every day in his office talks with Cruijff and Keizer, and later with Vasovic and Cruijff.

Keizer at his best was a magnetic, charismatic and magical player - for some even more magical and unpredictable than Cruijff, but he was also very moody and inconsistent. Cruijff and Swart were the more consistent attackers. Michels was a truly brilliant 'people manager' though (former teacher on a school).

This makes a lot more sense:

Qua spelopvatting, technisch vermogen, qua alles eigenlijk.

Trots overheerste desondanks.

    Wim Jonk antwoordt dus: 'Ja.'

    Nieuwe talenten

    Bal of iPod?

With Jelle Goes in the Judas role.

  11. Read this in the beautiful game thread:
    Is quite funny

He was part classic virtuoso, part messiah and this was never more apparent than the time he was sent off, for defying a referee, in a La Liga game against Malaga in 1977.

It was the signal for a riot by his army of supporters. They raced on to the field, led by a large man on crutches who moved at remarkable speed at the head of the pack chasing down the embattled official. When he came alongside the referee the indignant fan threw a punch, lost his balance and slowly toppled to the ground. The vast crowd howled but their greatest cause of angst was that their hero was no longer part of the game.

Later, as burned television vans smouldered, the Golden Dutchman repented and explained, “Sometimes you are so involved in the game, nothing else matters, and I’m afraid I’m guilty of this tonight. But with my next performance I hope to put away this memory.”

He did – and in the most astonishing way.

Discovering Cruyff truly genius. Here, he's discussing the timid tactics employed by Advocaat in 1994:

Here he's explaining the diamond system in midfielder: Basically, it's the way Bayern plays now with a 3-4-3 formation:

I hope that a documentary will be made about the person that was Johan. The way he talked about things... Some of it downright confusing and a lot of it profound in the most simplest of ways. And then there are his Cruyff courts, 200 of them all around the world giving kids a place to have fun and play. His wonderful help for disabled children to give them a chance to sport. The opportunity he gives to atheletes to have another life after sport. And stayed so normal.

    Truly a great man.

Unlike what the Flemish pundits De Saedeler and Raes said throughout the years he's not "the angel of football", but crap like the Panama Papers probably did not happen with him. He was mostly interested in football only and not versed into the political and bureaucratic side of the game. He was also not ranked among the 1000 wealthiest Dutchman.
