Lord knows we need this kid to pan out.... Will be interesting to see what his next step is with the first team, or how open that door is for him to make an impact.

When was the last time an American started in the Argentine league?

Good question! Maybe @bshredder knows. On top of that he's starting CAM..

Rep for anyone that watches the game (unable to sadly).

Side note: he's also playing next to Guinazu. I remember watching that guy play Copa libertadores back in 2012. The dude is 40 now :coffee: what a tank.

I’m watching; he just took a corner, came to nothing. Was not involved with their goal.

Velez had a pen but it was saved; still 1-0 talleres.

He is taking all of their set pieces; mixed success so far.

1-0 at the half. He just had a shot right at the keeper before half. He had a few opportunities where he was leading a counter to play in his teammates on the wing and he held the ball for too long and it came to nothing.

Cufre ties it up with a nice goal. Joel was off the pitch after taking a knock to his mouth. 1-1

Joel looks like he pulled a hamstring. It’s hard to tell but the trainers are signaling for a sub.

His debut didn't leave me optimistic about his future prospects. Reminded me of Luis Gil in Mexico. The lack of agility will likely always be an impediment for him. Will need to overcome that with special ball skills and ideas. Didn't display that in this match. Was merely good (not for a 10) in that department. Hopefully nerves played a part in not reading the game quickly or clearly for that final killer ball. But I don't recall him being overly productive in Germany's lower leagues even.

It's also a small window for success for this type of player. So many of them for us: Hyndman, Zelalem, Gil, etc.; are ending up as 8/10 tweeners. When they are legit 10's, we hit big. But those are exceptions not rules.

Now shoot away at the messenger like some did then when I made that assessment of Gil. Not an ideologue. I quite liked the idea of him. But it was a pretty bad first impression in terms of watching a full match of his. Looked better on highlights...but then again don't we all.

My guess.....Bryan Gerzicich. The LA born Argentine - American spent most of his career in Israel but he did start out with Arsenal de Sarandí.

That's now first team appearances in 5 straight games. Good signs.

Wound up getting garbage minutes (in at 87'). Talleres was already winning. 3 - 0 FT.

Who was that American goalie who played in the Argentine league a decade ago or so?
