outside of being a starter at a bottom Serie A club has anyone seen him play there? I haven't see him play since his Dortmund days, his loan to Celtic was a flop based on vast majority of reports. the goal for anyone interested. https://streamja.com/nl4O
It's been pretty frequently mentioned on this thread that Toljan's father died before he was born and, in any case, wasn't a U.S. serviceman (which apparently helps with the citizenship paperwork) and he's had no contact with his American relatives down the years. More to the point, there's no evidence that his birth was registered with a U.S. consulate before his 18th birthday either, so the route to a U.S. passport is, if not closed off, even more of an obstacle course than usual. His chances of a German callup are just about zero at this stage but if he's weighing his options, choosing the USA over Croatia doesn't make any sense except on the basis of an emotional connection to the US MNT. Croatia are a small country with a pretty big MNT track record. If he's struggling at club level but performs well for Croatia in competitive internationals, he'll unquestionably get offers at BL1 level. If he chooses the Red-White-and-Blue and does the same, he'll get MLS offers. Choosing between BL1 vs MLS contracts is a no-brainer.
Thanks for the goal stream. I've watched two recent games from Jeremy - he looks settled in. Aggressive going forward and probably average to below average defensively for Serie A. Which is more than good enough for a shot with USMNT, but short of obvious lock starter, and he may not care to play for us anyway. Also, his best position is probably right back in a four-man back line, which may suddenly be our most crowded position - crowded enough that one of our right back candidates should probably be our left back starter for now.
according to reports, seems like his loan might have been a success. Sassuolo are seemingly interested in activating buying clause which is reported at like $5M. And AS Roma are interested in him as well.
lol, don't start on that. Everytime/Anytime there is any update, the call/cap him shtick pops up. still maintain there is no point in wanting a player who has 0 interest. Most German-Americans are interested/consider USA but not this one.
I'm thinking Toljan won't give US a thought until after 2022 WC, assuming neither Germany or Croatia call him in the interim. Maybe he holds out for 2024 Euros too, when he'll be 29.
Toljan pulled a muscle, has missed both games this week. This article says he may be available next week. https://www.sassuolonews.net/news/i...uscolo-psoas-il-comunicato-del-sassuolo-25527
looks like Sassuolo will active the $5M purchase option after 1 year and he'll sign a contract until 2025. Upon request, consultant Ersin Akan confirms: "There have been many inquiries for Jerry after performing so well in Italy. He feels very comfortable in Sassuolo and has developed a lot there. The fact that he is in Serie A when defenders were allowed to compete with top strikers every week, we were forced to stay. We are confident that this will now happen quickly. " https://www.sport1.de/fussball/bund...rkt-bvb-verkauft-jeremy-toljan-an-us-sassuolo Toljan turns 26 next month so that's a contract that lasts until he's 31 assuming he stays and doesn't extend even after that.
This probably decreases his already small chances of ever playing for Germany. Unless you're playing for a top-3 team in Italy, unlikely to get a look. They are more likely to pick players from Bundesliga and Premier League. So if he wants to play internationally, will have to consider Croatia or USA.
BVB announced a loan extension, now containing a purchase option automatically triggered once certain conditions are met.
Toljan on the bench vs Milan today. Sassuolo in 8th place, not bad. Let's get his passport application in pronto.
Croatia restarts nations league Sept. 5 against Portugal. Will be curious if Jeremy gets called by them. Potentially could call him for October 7 friendly against Switzerland, if he already has his Croatian passport.
Watched Toljan against Genoa on Wednesday. Genoa definitely wasn't at their level, but what a free flowing game Sassuolo played. Toljan didn't necessarily stand out, but was solid at putting out whatever small sparks Genoa was able to generate while supporting their attack. Would be an interesting player were he to decide he'd like to represent the US. We'll see!
Actually..... the first thing he needs to do is connect to his deceased father’s family. There is little to no connection and if I am understanding it correctly, there is paperwork or proof needed to had to prove his father’s US citizenship from the US Gov.
I suspect that if Jeremy somehow wanted to play for the US (or, more likely, realized if he wanted a senior national team career it likely needs to be with the Stars & Stripes) that he could contact US Soccer and they would get in touch with his family and get all the requisite paperwork filed.
Exactly. If he wants to play for the USA, he just has to tell his agent to contact the USSF and they'll organize (and probably pay for) everything from there. Unless and until his people do contact the USSF he's not interested.
