Not to the level Colombia needs.

Yes, he can move well, but he doesn't have the brain to organize a team. That's what Colombia is lacking: organization.

The last legit box-to-box midfielder we've played was Guarin. The ONLY times he ever played well for Colombia was when we played with a trio of central mids: one to shut down play (Sanchez), one to organize possession (Aguilar), and the one who had liberty to move around. This strategy had some success, but it never catered to Falcao's game.

Colombia must play in a way that best optimizes Falcao and James, and we've yet to find that formula. Both of those guys require a specific type of partner to thrive. Falcao had Teo back in the day; the hope is Duvan can be the guy now. James had Macnelly early on, and then a sacrificing 9 in Teo at the world cup.

Our next best attacker is Cuadrado and he and James simply do NOT mesh very well. That lack of cohesion is what makes it necessary to have a guy like Aguilar on the field, and, often, the extra winging midfielder in Cardona (who gets misused out there) or Ibarbo (he's done, but his defensive work rate was huge at the WC).

Basically, Lerma can't plug in the gaps our current formations have. Play him where Sanchez is (or Arias) or don't play him at all.

In my ideal world I see Lerma and a healthy Perez play together in the World Cup.
But in reality we may just ride with the Old Sanchez and Abel pairing sink or swim.

I just have a bad feeling. It is not like Abel was playing at all at Cali and he still was getting minutes for Pekerman. Sanchez's form and lack of minutes at the club level may not be all that important either.

But we do have those friendlies. And experimenting could help things out. Maybe someone steps up who none of us are even talking about.

    inst the same situation.

    Different cases and not identical:

Aguilar wasnt abolsute starter in cali but he played in the last 6 months at least 12 matches........and in the first semester played a lot of.

Sanchez since august only have completed less than 400 minutes. he isnt in the plans of pioli.

Not the same exact situation but still players who are not getting much minutes who are favored to get the starting spots unless someone else steps up.

I have been saying for more than a year now I hope one of those players is Lerma.

I just hope we can see more of Lerma in a MF role as opposed to RB in March.

Dani torres seems to play once every four games and it seems sebPerez is still in no man’s land.

I haven’t heard much about either GC, so it’s going to be a scramble come March and WC time when it comes to the deep midfield.

FYI - Seba played this weekend with Boca (friendly), so that's a + but still has lots to show.

Lerna wouldn't be a good choice for a box to box at this point. Needs to be the 6 beside someone else, Cardona is our best bet to take the Aguilar role and be the brain playing deeper in mid.

Cuellar should be the guy........his season last year was solid.

Perez will have a difficult season with a lot of competence, that in case he wins he will deserve an spot in the wc.........because his competence are nandez, pablo perez and naybe gago......alll 3 candidates to go the world cup with their national teams.

Aguilar (even at his slowest) still plays a primarily defensive role. I would never trust or expect Cardona to do that...why put a player who has a natural ability to score and/or assist have major defensive responsibility? I don't think that's the answer.

Ojala no renueve.

Hopefully he has a great game and impresses Madrid's higher ups.
Then they sign him in the summer to be their modern day Makelele.
