Pretty interesting stuff on a few fronts. The goal that was given after a deliberate play shows that Gillett went to the monitor simply to sell the call. They had no real intention of overturning it, but went to give the players the impression that they were taking a second look. Right at the start, the far-side AR was communicating a possible foul even though it was right in the center of the field. Gillett was never out of control - or seemingly out of breath - during that entire game. I'd love to have Kris Griffith-Johns' (the VAR) voice - good set of pipes on that guy! I know this was 4 minutes out of 90, but I didn't expect as much on-going communication among the crew members. I'm sure this is personal preference.
I could watch videos like these all day. The amount of talking by the referee to the players is amazing. His communication on the non-handball was great. "I saw it hit his hand".
I love hearing what professional refs say to the players, it speaks volumes. Those are the things you never hear or see in a re-cert and it is difficult to demonstrate.
You can definitely tell that he has the respect of the players. That is a very difficult thing to achieve, at any level.
Football fans and media love stuff like this. I can't help that think the PGMOL could make their refs appear more human by releasing more clips like the Michael Oliver FA Cup final one.
As long as they find the right personality. I don't think Mike Dean would go over too well on camera. LoL. We all remember when how pompous he came across on that video with gramme le soux running fitness tests with the PGMOL.
I'd also like to hear Martin Atkinson's communication in a game. He's "The Iceman" on the field, just so collected at all times.
And why he's moving, if anyone's interested: https://www.a-league.com.au/news/jarred-gillett-resigns-hyundai-a-league-referee-panel
The video was taken down. Hopefully, it’s available elsewhere. I tried to access the video through BT Sport’s twitter page, but the video appears to be geo-locked. A real shame, as that video was great to show what it is referees are really doing on the field.
The A-League has released it worldwide on their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/aleague/posts/10157224828807728
This video is really helpful. More examples like this would help others become better referees. I've used similar lines on the free kick hindrance before. A lot of other times, I have no idea what to say. I could watch these videos all day (and hopefully one day get back on the pitch).
It was on the fox sports aus channel (currently accessible from europe and singapore). To those who may not know about raising the bat when he whistled his 4600th foul, that is a reference to cricket, when the player acknowledges a milestone.
