what do you guys think? Jamaica's squad in 1998 was very strong.... I think stronger than this T&T's team what do you say Warlord? Can someone name some 1998 Jamaican players.... Lowe... sinclair... who else?
Well I will say right now, I think my Reggaeboyz was stronger but I will wait to see how Trinidad & Tobago performs in Germany before I can really compare both teams. They both play different styles so it should be interesting to see what my other team does in Germany. A few players that played in Jamaica's WC team in 1998 were: Peter Cargill Theodore Whitmore Deon Burton Marcus Gayle Frank St Claire Robbie Earle Onandi Lowe Christopher Dawes Cornel ChinSue there are some more, but the names escape me at this present time.

There are several parallels to be draw between the two teams. They both qualified a year when CONCACAF had a slot extension (from 2 to 3 in 1998 and 3 to 3.5 in 2002. They both came from Caribbean islands with relatively small player pools and both teams changed substantially between the beginning of the competition and the final hex. We can compare their results: Here's Jamaica's 31.Mar 96 Paramaribo Surinam 0-1 Jamaica 21.Apr 96 Kingston Jamaica 1-0 Surinam 23.Jun 96 Bridgetown Barbados 0-1 Jamaica 30.Jun 96 Kingstown Jamaica 2-0 Barbados 15.Sep 96 Kingston Jamaica 3-0 Honduras 15.Sep 96 Kingstown St Vincent 0-3 Mexico 21.Sep 96 San Pedro Sula Honduras 2-1 Mexico 23.Sep 96 Kingstown St Vincent 1-2 Jamaica 13.Oct 96 Kingstown St Vincent 1-4 Honduras 16.Oct 96 Mexico City Mexico 2-1 Jamaica 27.Oct 96 Tegucigalpa Honduras 0-0 Jamaica 30.Oct 96 Mexico City Mexico 5-1 St Vincent 06.Nov 96 Mexico City Mexico 3-1 Honduras 10.Nov 96 Kingston Jamaica 5-0 St Vincent 17.Nov 96 Kingston Jamaica 1-0 Mexico 17.Nov 96 San Pedro Sula Honduras 11-3 St Vincent P W D L Gls Pts 1.Jamaica 6 4 1 1 12- 3 13 2.Mexico 6 4 0 2 14- 6 12 ----------------------------------- 3.Honduras 6 3 1 2 18-11 10 4.Saint Vincent 6 0 0 6 6-30 0 02.Mar 97 Mexico City Mexico 4-0 Canada 02.Mar 97 Kingston Jamaica 0-0 USA 16.Mar 97 Palo Alto USA 3-0 Canada 16.Mar 97 San José Costa Rica 0-0 Mexico 23.Mar 97 San José Costa Rica 3-2 USA 06.Apr 97 Vancouver Canada 0-0 El Salvador 13.Apr 97 Mexico City Mexico 6-0 Jamaica 20.Apr 97 Foxboro USA 2-2 Mexico 27.Apr 97 Vancouver Canada 0-0 Jamaica 04.May 97 San Salvador El Salvador 2-1 Costa Rica 11.May 97 San José Costa Rica 3-1 Jamaica 18.May 97 Kingston Jamaica 1-0 El Salvador 01.Jun 97 Edmonton Canada 1-0 Costa Rica 08.Jun 97 San Salvador El Salvador 0-1 Mexico 29.Jun 97 San Salvador El Salvador 1-1 USA 10.Aug 97 San José Costa Rica 0-0 El Salvador 07.Sep 97 Portland USA 1-0 Costa Rica 07.Sep 97 Kingston Jamaica 1-0 Canada 14.Sep 97 Kingston Jamaica 1-0 Costa Rica 14.Sep 97 San Salvador El Salvador 4-1 Canada 03.Oct 97 Washington USA 1-1 Jamaica 05.Oct 97 Mexico City Mexico 5-0 El Salvador 12.Oct 97 Edmonton Canada 2-2 Mexico 02.Nov 97 Mexico City Mexico 0-0 USA 09.Nov 97 Vancouver Canada 0-3 USA 09.Nov 97 San Salvador El Salvador 2-2 Jamaica 09.Nov 97 Mexico City Mexico 3-3 Costa Rica 16.Nov 97 Kingston Jamaica 0-0 Mexico 16.Nov 97 San José Costa Rica 3-1 Canada 16.Nov 97 Foxboro USA 4-2 El Salvador P W D L Gls Pts 1.Mexico 10 4 6 0 23- 7 18 2.USA 10 4 5 1 17- 9 17 3.Jamaica 10 3 5 2 7-12 14 ---------------------------------------- 4.Costa Rica 10 3 3 4 13-12 12 5.El Salvador 10 2 4 4 11-16 10 6.Canada 10 1 3 6 5-20 6

Jamaica won its last match against an already qualified Mexico.
Semi final groups 98 (Sep 96) US (18), CR(73), Guat(113), TT (34) Can (78), El Sal (72) Pan(105), Cuba (57) Jam (38),Mex (13), Hon (43), StV (87) TT played horribly below their level and Guatemala were a bit unlucky seeing that they gained seven of a possible nine points playing in the states (twice) and el salvador for their home games Canada's group was essentially a very mediocre one and its no surprise that both of its qualifiers finished 5th and 6th in the hex. On the last day Jamaica needed a point from an already qualified Mexico to avoid being overtaken by a Honduras team needing to beat StV by a goal margin of 6+ goals or so (while hoping for a Mexico win.) Jamaica won 1-0 Semi final groups 06 (Sep 96) US (10), Pan (103), El Sal (106), Jam (54) CR (28), Guat (79), Hon (59), Can (96) Mex (8), TT (67), StV (151), StK (112) Jamaica, usually strong at home, took only 2 points from 3 home matches, giving the second spot to an overachieving Panama. (this is a team Trinidad beat 5-0 on aggregate in 2002) Even if Canada had been given those two 'wins' against Honduras, the table going into the last day would have been Guat 10 CR 9 Can 6 Hon 5, with Hon-CR and Guat- Can. Can would have needed a Honduras (already eliminated) victory to proceed. Seeing that they couldn't score against CR when they acually had a chance to progress, I'm still not buying it. TT's group was maybe, a joke, but not more than jam's... Of course Trinidad 06 had one test that Jamaica 98 didn't, the meeting with a completely unknown team from outside the region.
Midknight, Good assessment of both teams. I think the information you provided gives a clear picture of how difficult it was for both teams to qualify for a WC. Surely I would love to see both qualify for South Africa in 2010. Maybe we could displace one of the top three teams in the region.
USA And Mexico are almost guaranteed for 2010 unless they have a string of bad luck or injury plague, Costa Rca is the more likely candidate to be displace since right now they have aging players going to the world cup. There isnt very much Youth talent in Costa Rica, but we have to see in this upcoming years if they can produce a youth that can replace Wanchope as the Talisman.
While it may be difficult to displace the likes of the US and Mexico, it is still possible. My Jamaica has a lot of skillful young players coming through and Trinidad & Tobago has quite a few good young players coming up also. We already know that Panama will be better next time around but it would definitely be interesting to see what Guate, CRC, Canada and Honduras have by the next hex.
Jamaica 1998 was better. The qualifying in 98, even more in 02, was difficult. I thought it would be a steady progression, but several teams failed badly this time and the Hex was not as strong/difficult as 98 and 02.
i think jamaica because trinidad & tobago used the .5 to get in while jamaica used the third ticket to go in directly.
In terms of 2010, I believe that T&T has finally figured it out. Local business is getting involved in the sponsorship, and payment for national team players. This is evident in the marketing of the trademarked Soca Warrior apparel and memorabilia. This is beyond the authentic team jersey and the flag. I think that this is the begining of wide spread local sponsorship for football. Think of football fever like carnival fever, and you can see the potential. For one of the smallest countries in the world T&T has managed to organize one of the most profitable carnivals in the world, and it is mostly driven by local investment. Part of the apparel and memorabilia funds go to TTFF and will be instrumental in the development of the younger players. I foresee more friendlies for the under 17 teams etc. T&T has always produced world class footballers, but never the quantity to compete with the likes of Mexico and Costa Rica. I believe that local business has finally realized the magnitude of world cup football, and as a result you will see more competitive teams from T&T because there will be more dollars in the development of players, and therfore a deeper team. Other than the USA and Canada, T&T has the strongest economy in CONCACAF and should be able to put more dollars into the development of players.
