but we had a roster that could have competed for MLS CUP/SS/USOC, it would have been worth it (getting rid of NRod and Pauno) and it would have given them a whole year before the move to the city.
At best we'd be hoping for a dead cat bounce from a new manager. new GM is going to want his own manager in place and Mansueto is going to want his own GM when he has full control. This was a decent on paper roster that underperformed, but there's no way it was close to a SS contender. At best this was a "lucky playoff or cup run" roster this year.
Who's fault is that? That's one problem we wouldn't of had if he was FIRED after last year. Our attacking side of the roster was/is one of the best in the league. Niko, Frankowski, Katai, Nico, Schweinsteiger (If he was played in his natural position), Sapong and Dax. We knew we needed a couple of defenders and a keeper and yet did did absolutely NOTHING to get them. Who's fault is that? Who's fault was it to trade Johnson for 50k of funny money? So yes if those TWO assholes were gone, we would have been in the running for ALL three of those trophies.
Oh make no mistake, Pauno sucked this year, but even if he was fired at the end of last season, "Hey want to come manage/GM the Fire on a one year contract!?" wasn't going to put us in a great position for a manager/GM either. Promoting a random assistant to interim and hoping he turns into Jim Curtin would have been a better idea than trying to land a winning manager with the entire organization in flux.
Why would it have to be a one year contract? I'm sure Joe would have told him and the GM that Andrew is going to gone by years end, we would be leaving Seat Geek Stadium and moving into the city (Soldiers Field/SSS). It would have been nice to go into the 2020 season as a competitive team.
None of that was guaranteed though. The Bridgeview negotiations could have fallen apart, for example.
I believe it was it the works after we were awarded the 2017 MLS All-Star game and with Joe buying 49% of the team last year fast tracked it.
Possible. Though it's why I've been patient with the team since Joe M came on board. It also doesn't take a whole lot to go from being a loser to being a winner in MLS if you know what you're doing. There's been a lot of moving parts with the Fire this year, but for better or worse they've been all in the background. Team basically has a blank slate now. This year feels like the 2010 Kansas City Wizards season in a lot of ways.
I’m just not confident in Nelson getting canned like some of you are. It’s possible but I’m not believing it at this point.
I'm told it's all happening at the end of the season. Mark your calendars, everyone. On October 7th, heads will roll.
it seems odd that Mansueto would approve a big money transfer of Nelson’s in July only to have already determined to fire him when he has full control.
A friend of mine had a set all throughout the Millen years. Ditched them after they made the playoffs in 2011 because they stoped being dirt cheap (by NFL standards at least)
I might want to remind you that the Chicago Fire did NOT have a "big money transfer" in July, whether it was Nelson Rodriguez's or not. Second, a single player's coming or going (except, maybe, Bastian) would not be affected by the GM coming or going. Third, whether or not Joe Mansueto had "already determined to fire" Rodriguez in July is not relevant any more. Nelson Rodriguez needs to go. It would make sense to let the season play out and then clean house.
