I loved how he went over to the bench in the 1st half and talked/teached/coached to the bench players about something he saw. They all listened intently. Was a cool moment, i thought.
The only thing I would change here is that Altidore might still be over Sargent. But yeah, Adams in the Lima role would be outstanding. An extremely genuine and earnest shout-out to Tyler B, wherever you are, for this insightful and well-thought out comment on @joeInCleats' tactical analysis of USA-Panama. https://t.co/PuL4uXhmer pic.twitter.com/Dlxyi6dyzn— Alexander Abnos (@AnAbnos) January 29, 2019
I could hear him calling out to tell Zimmerman to open up when the ball was being switched from the left to the right, across the backline, under some pressure so he could play forward quickly.
Gregg is a smart cookie. Doesn't mean he can coach, but it sure helps. He's done a great job with Columbus overall, even though they wet the bed against NYRB. Great start to his USMNT campaign.
Like I've said before, my criticism of 3G's will be strictly constructive thru Gold Cup. Sean Johnson? His first play vs. Panama was a save which he proceeded to roll out to a cb on his right, who wasn't really in position to deal with it and put it across the goal mouth - Sean doing his usual huh? where's that going? - to a teammate who struggled and lost the ball and suddenly a Panamanian was sitting with the ball at the top of the box. If that's any R16 opponent it's a goal. Sometimes it's best just to give up on a guy. I'm sure Sean will have a long and productive career with NYCFC. It's time to grow up and move on to a different type of mentality for the USMNT.
I also did not like how he handled the ball passed to him. He was too nervy. He does have a tremendous range of passing which is a good point. But, with Berhalter's system the goalie needs to be secure with the ball at his feet. At this point that would Steffen and Guzan. Not sure about anybody else.
Guzan? Secure with the ball at his feet?? He's better than he used to be, but I get nervous every time he receives a pass. There's nothing natural about his ball control with his feet. Not to mention that he manages to send the ball out of bounds on goal kicks half the time.
It was a very strange selection, unless Johnson is known for mentoring. He's very inconsistent, especially down the straight based on the last 2 years.
He's got 6 caps. I don't think anyone believes he will be a starter. Berhalter is looking for backup keepers.
Well then lucky for him the next World Cup is less than 5 years away! Are you seriously thinking beyond the 2022 World Cup already? If not, who cares? And there are a few important games between now and then, too... Also in recent World Cups we've taken backup goalkeepers like Marcus Hahnemann and Nick Rimando so clearly being "prime age" is not the main consideration!
No, the original poster seemed to hint that Johnson was a new youngster. I was just setting the record straight. I think we need someone better than Steffen, and Johnson ain't it. I'm thinking Jonathan Klinsmann will take the top spot, with Steffen backup.
Klinsmann won't take over the USMNT this season. But I think he's working his way into being a Bundesliga starter next season., while Zach Steffen isn't going to play at Manchester City. Steffen may be loaned out or may ride the pine. Either way, Klinsmann will be playing at a higher level and will pass Steffen on the depth chart. That's my prediction.
Getting back to Berhalter since this isn't the goalkeeper thread.... "I think in the second half the guys rose to the challenge." 🇺🇸USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter shares his thoughts with @daniellevslaton after today's win against Costa Rica. pic.twitter.com/Fw6BIcVmtZ— FOX Soccer (@FOXSoccer) February 2, 2019
Meet Tyler Heaps and Joris Bekkers, USSF's for real data analysts. http://www.philly.com/soccer/us-soc...-stats-roster-picks-opta-soccer-20190201.html I wonder if there is some internal rule that each major area will be staffed by one American and one Dutchman?
I thought the rule was they had come from top innovating clubs Columbus Crew and Philadelphia Union. Not sure why this is in this thread as both of these guys joined the Fed before Berhalter was hired and before Stewart took over his job. Heaps has been with the Fed since early 2016.
The article has some details on how the USMNT and Berhalter will be using stats. Very interesting stuff. I didn't say specifically that because I didn't want to wake the "It is not proven that Berhalter uses stats" poster.
Stats can be dangerous. As you build a team around stats, it gets narrower and narrower in terms of what it can do and suddenly the manager finds that the opposition has discovered the way of taking that system down. At that point the manager doesn't have a plan b or c because he had selected players on a set of stats "A".
