Actually, I was right, not even the yugoslavians won it while the socialist block was still active.

Didn't the USSR coup happened after the summer of 91, that would mean Red Star won the EC while the socialist block was still in power.

No, the socialist block collapsed cca. 89 . The last dictator to fall was Ceausescu in december 89, that I can tell you for sure. (I'm not sure if the regime in Albania fell before or after ours, but that's not so important). Germany was reunited in 1990. After this there definitely was no socialist block any more. In 91 IIRC the Soviet Union collapsed but that's a different thing.

1982 was the best midfield Brazil has ever had. Bu the goalkeeper was mediocre. Tele Santana (coach) was very criticized for his choice of the goalkeeper. It seems that, for personal intimate reasons, he chose not to call Leao, the best goalkeeper at the time.

Also, we did not have a top level striker. Serginho was not at the level of the other great players of the team.

I have seen this match again recently, the whole footage. Italy deserved to win and, contrary to what people say, I think Italy would win again, if the match was replayed.

PS: Brazil and Italy had already played against each other in the 1978 third place match in Argentina...and Paolo Rossi scored against Brazil then. And a curiosity, the 1982 italy goalkeeper, DIno Zoff, was at the italian squad in the 1970 worl cup final, he was the third goalkeeper.

I dont agree there mate.. Italy played well and deserved the win for pouncing on brazils errors but take those errors away and it would have been a very different game.. Brazil were a better team but italy won on the day.
as for peres- he had nothing to do against italy..he had no chance on the goals and no other saves to make..he made a couple of decent saves against argentina but in the rest of the games he was a virtual spectator.. The only mistake he made was against the ussr..
he wasnt to blame against italy..
serginho was the weak link.. With a decent centre forward brazil would have been even better but even carrying serginho take away cerezos pass and brazil would have got a draw..
i love italian football and the azzurri by the way so i aint knocking them but brazil were easily more than capable of beating them they just failed on the day with stupid mistakes and italy won by exploiting them

    Don't be insensitive.

What I have to say is that it looks like in the end the best team really won. Congrats.

It seems that the impressive lost 1-7 against Germany emphasizes brazilian football's crisis (which is known for years). If Brazil had lost 0-1 for both Germany and Netherlands, there wouldn't be all this rumor. Brazil played as bad as in 1966, 1990, 2006, 2010. The problem was the WAY we lost, like an amateur team, when all Felipão and Parreira said was that "we'll be the champions!"

The major effect of this lost is to brazilian proud: it was the worst in brazilian team history and it came in a WC semifinal played at home. A new "ghost" to scare future generations instead of 1950's.

    Brazil
Play this game 10 times, and Brasil wins or ties the other 9, meaning advancing.
Brasil needs to return to this style of play.

You're very right .. Brazil are no longer a good force as before and it was KNOWN for years (at least since 2010)

The main problem is sthat both Scolari and Parreira were all "ex- WC winners" ... yes they WERE CHampions, but then they forgot those happened like 12 to 20years back .. and time seems FLYING for Older people

There will never be a return to joga bonito... To play in that style you need players that grew up with the philosophy of beautiful football... In their youth ,Zico eder falcao socrates etc were inspired by pele and the 1970 team so playing attractive football came naturally to them...
It is not something you can coach... Tele santana would not be able to make artists out of ramires paulinho hulk and the rest... Tele santana's idea of how football should be played was perfect and idealistic but most importantly he had a generation of brilliant players to select..that made his job easier..
Santana wanted to emulate the 1970 team in style and he had the players to do it...

But now - the next generation of brazilian players have no selecao to inspire them.. Who will they try and emulate ? Will the next generation aspire to be like hulk fred ramires or paulinho ?..
Joga bonito is long gone.. Its dead and buried.. It died in the quarter finals of the 1986 world cup and it was killed by the fear of losing...
Rivaldo ronaldinho ronaldo and many other brazilian players since 1986 have all been capable of playing beautiful football but the problem was the philosophy of the coaches they played under and the workman like midfielders they played with...
Every team needs a dunga or a mauro silva type player, but when you select 4 defensive midfielders in the same team you are not going to get attractive football...
Brazil doesnt want to excite the world anymore - brazil just wants to win at all costs...
And hopefully this embarrassing display at the world cup will make brazil find a new philoshophy for the future - not a return to the mythical joga bonito but a modern attacking style of play with more creative players...

    For Brazil,
Joga bonito had DIED as soon as WC86 ended (from 1938 ... after nearly 50years)

From 90 to 2006: Brazil were still playing "good" (not as beautiful but more effective) and remained as #1 for a long time ...

    From 2007- 2010 a transitional time to a weaker ERA ...

Since 2010 til now WC2014? Brazil ended a NEW LOW RECORD: 2 loss games with 10goals allowed at WC = NOTHING LEFT - all is "hope " and "hope" for better.

    Hello Giles,

I wrote some emotional words in the day after the 7x1 tragedy on July 9th, 2014.

" Tragic, I'm still perplexed and sad. Disappointment (although I believe even in defeat, but not in a massacre) and I feel so sorry for the players. And the sadness of Brazilian children . It is rather humbling from the perspective of national identity mirror with football. We were not playing well during the World Cup, but the way of building this large game score yesterday ...
Yesterday someone sent me message after the game, I said him I was very emotional and had no good rational, short and objective analysis that moment: 7x1 is strong!
I do not expect Brazil to win the next game in Brasilia ... hopefully just enough work and dignity, football and more emotional control, not panic, if possible [P.S.: We lost 3x0 and I was there in the stadium in Brasília] ... I like the Sport Football itself (Final in Rio promises a great game! [It was]) ... Today, in this moment of grief ... I´m more humble as a cheer. This morning I went to work under the influence of knockout yet! " I mourned then.

The humiliation of Brazil was shocking, and it will be a long road to recovery from this.

Giles, It was hard to see and understand what was happening during that game. 4 goals in 6 minutes! The worst game in Brazil Football History. The worst blowout in history. Humiliation!

Brazil was not playing well in the World Cup ( you could see in the game ChileX Brazil. I saw the game Brazil X Camaroon in the stadium and the team still had emotional control, not that bad. But I don´t forget Camaroon was not a strong team).
Too many pression in a young team that was not a great generation - perhaphs not that bad for this score, but they was ( I mean not the worst in the world), many players not good was was last year + ugly game + coach ( Big Phil) that is not modern and didn´t have different tatics + no midfield + the coach saying that Brazil would win the World Cup ( populism, like our terrible goverment), so more pression on the players + chose the players for the World Cup not seeing the way they were playing this year+ lost two best players of the team ( Neymar- reference of the team and Thiago Silva, the capitan and best in defense) + what Giles said in comment #367 +...+Germany great team ( not in this order)= 7x1.
But it was the reality. Brazil has to work hard and change its football to... The dream team of 1982 was a really in the past. The reality now is ugly. Hard work for a long time. We will never forget this game.

It´s intersting our culture. We make jokes to try to light our tragedies like Brazilian team 1982, when Senna passed away and after this 7x1 tragedy in our own country. I can explain this later. I´m going to travel these days, than I would like to write here again.

James, you know it was hard in Belo Horizonte in Mineirão stadium! I met a guy in Brasília in the 3rd play-off game wearing Barbosa jersey ( Brazilian Goalkeeper in the final in 1950 Brazil World Cup ). He told me that he was honouring that player, because the 7x1 humiliation this year was bigger...The other day of the tragedy, I left home all in black clothes. I talked to guys during that day that told me they had almost cried . If they said that , I guess they also cried, at least, inside themselves.
