On the Slovenian side of the Julian Alps

The distant horizon is the Italian side of the Julian Alps. This photograph was taken on the Slovenian side. A sub-range of the Alps, the Julians form a natural border between the two nations. A significant portion of the Julian Alps is preserved within Slovenia’s Triglav National Park. If you guessed the range was named after a certain Roman emperor, you’d be correct: Around 50 BCE, Julius Caesar founded a town on what is now the Italian side of the mountains. As the Roman Empire expanded, the range became the Julian Alps.

The New York Cosmos' off-season tours criss-crossed the globe to generate cash and attract new players, but forgotten are the statistics resulting from so many matches. In 1980, the Cosmos played 26 exhibition matches, and Giorgio Chinaglia scored 26 goals in those games -- including a hat trick against Roma and 2 each against Argentinos Juniors, FC Cologne, Fiorentina and Manchester City. Added to the 48 goals Chinaglia scored during the regular season and playoffs, his 1980 tally was an astounding 74 goals in 65 games.
