While the World Cup is in the air, here are some pics form the tournament held in the USA during the summer of 1994 featuring yours truly and other family and friends….
Nice images. Are all photos your personal photos. I mean on Italian sites, gastronomy? Really nice. In that World Cup, I remembered the interview with the father of Tony Meola, who cried, because USA and his son might play against Italy.
Yeah a few are mine and some are from family and friends. The picturesque ones are mostly from Facebook. I remember meeting Tony Meloa and Alexi Lalas and speaking to them in Italian. I believe Meola’s dad played for Avellino. Before The USA played Italy in Italia 90 , fans in Rome stadio olimpico held up ten fingers pointing at him saying Italy would win 10-0. When the game ended 1-0 for Italy , Meola Sr said to them in Italian, what happened to the ten goals? I guessed they just looked at him and walked away as they couldn’t believe the USA played as well defensively as they did. That was basically a team of college all stars and they held mighty Italy pretty well and almost tied the score but Walter Zenga made a spectacular save off the goal line.
I was at that match. My cousin and his friends were ribbing me the entire car trip from Salerno to Rome. Remember that USA were embarrassed by Czechoslovakia 5:1. So against Italy, they came out very conservative. Giannini scored in the 11th minute. Vialli hit the post on a PK. Each time Meola got the ball, Italy would retreat to midfield and he would just boot it up. If it got played by the back, little pressure put on them. The only doubt came on a free kick where Vermes got on the rebound and Zenga literally saved with his ass. I was right behind that goal when it happened. But it was a boring affair.
Oh sure it was a lousy game but Italy were fielding superstars while the USA had college amateurs who recently turned pros. No one would ever think Italy would only win by a score of only 1-0. Heck it was the Serie A playing against 5th or even 6th tier players and at the time, I don't think players were even making anything....
This is one of my favorite threads on this site. Also preparing me for my trip to Italy in August lol
