New York City activists gathered on Friday, 26 May to protest in solidarity with Palestinian prisoners on hunger strike and demand freedom for all Palestinian prisoners. The protest, outside Best Buy in Union Square, also urged consumers to participate in the growing global boycott of Hewlett-Packard (HP) products, as Hewlett-Packard Enterprise (HPE) operates a number of contracts with the Israeli occupation, including with the military, the checkpoint system and the Israel Prison Service.

69 years after Nakba – 9 reasons why it is time for Israel’s retirement

Yet again we mark another birthday of the ongoing international catastrophe known as Israel. It has been 69 years since almost a million Palestinian were ransacked of their homeland, killed and displaced at gunpoint, replacing an entire indigenous community with another pan-European, American, cross-continental, and anything but native people. But today our spectacles will see through Israel’s concurrent massacres, displacement of millions and littered illegal settlements. Humanity has come to terms with this illness, and is beginning to look beyond its wounds. An illness terrifically intertwined in some way or another to every ‘problem’ in the world, be it political, irrigational,[1] agricultural,[2] racial,[3] educational,[4] or more often than not local.[5] This is simply because a ‘problem’ can only be fuelled by another perpetuated problem and can seldom survive with a ‘solution’. Thus talk of a ‘solution’ cannot include the Zionist entity if it is truly a solution.

From its inception by the promise of UK’s Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour to Baron Rothschild, leader of the British Jewish community in 1917, and the declaration of Ben-Gurion on the 14th of May, 1948 Israel seems more insistent than many of its adversaries that it is not here to stay. Others of the world’s smallest states (comparable to Israel), surrounded by similar ‘hostility’ that Israel pities itself for, such as Cuba never speak of nations or people ‘threatening their existence‘, a claim even fledged by Israel at Human Rights organisations.[6] Even the weakest nations never feel the need to prove that they are ‘here to stay’,[7] or outcry to supposed promises to ‘wipe Israel off the map’,[8] or see their own expansion into new settlements as something that ‘undermines Israel’s existence.’[9] It is not hard to see how this hysteria broadcasts Israel’s self-belief that it is not really ‘here to stay’.

Israel has far from used its 69 year career to rectify its image as the unwanted guest. In other words, nothing of its treatment to the native population serves to change its status of existence from ‘transient’ to permanent. We can compare this to Britain’s foothold in India which began gaining momentum as early as 1600. Its policy was one on-par with that of Israel, one that undermined rights, oppressed and was characterised by exploitation and social division. Tens of rebellions preceded the 1857 uprising against British East India Company, compelling the British Crown to amass India to its collection of colonies. Britain’s reinforced imperial presence was hampered by further resistive movements, many motivated by the anti-colonial sentiment created by the 1857 revolution eventually bringing British imperial rule in India to an end in 1947 – in just 190 years.

From 1948, Israel compelled itself an ‘invader’, ‘occupier’ and an entity that “must do everything to ensure they (the Palestinian refugees) never do return” according to David Ben-Gurion, the declarer of its ‘independence’ on the 14th of May, 1948.[10] The sentiment that this de-facto ‘state’ will be brought to an end has moreover existed perpetually amongst Palestinians and the world at large from the very beginning. Structured institutions and resistance movements are currently struggling to meet this end, and are united on the notion of ‘liberation’ from Galilee to Sinai, gaining ever-growing military presence and societal backing, all elements that were lacking in the India’s quelled 1857 revolt.[11] Thus the imminence of the Zionist mission coming to an end, as was the case with Britain’s defied colonies, is not farfetched or unrealistic. Realisation of Israel’s incumbent retirement could clarify why it suffers from what we can call an ‘existential complex’ and could explain why it is swaying further and further to the right. But the repercussions of this political and communal swing has only benefited the Palestinian cause and exacerbated Israel’s position. Consider the following:

1. Palestine obtained recognition from Sweden as a formal state. Sweden is the first western European country to break the deadlock, other than Bulgaria, Cyprus, Slovakia, Hungary, Malta, Poland and Romania and Non-EU member Iceland.[12] This was largely instigated by crippling Israeli settlement expansion. This has displayed its real thoughts on Palestinian statehood.

2. The Palestinian Authority has finally been pressured into becoming a member of the ICC as its image pursuing negotiations with a government clearly uninterested is becoming too embarrassing.[13] Although many will dispute whether the PA will dare take this membership further, it lays grounds for impartial prosecutors to revisit Israel’s atrocities.

3. Israel’s summer 2014 war on Gaza has rendered its military image to tatters. The massacre in 2014, at least two-thirds of which were civilians,[14] was on the back of no justification but smugness and spite (three Israeli teens lie,[15] if you remember), creating unprecedented international backing and support of Gazan resistance. The resistance’s achievements overhauled any previous war (sophisticated tunnel networks, Palestinian unmanned drones,[16] and astute armed confrontation to mention but a few), and tarnished the ‘invincibility’ of the IDF’s most ‘elite’ units.

4. Hamas’ political wing was absolved from its ‘terrorist’ status by European court, a position it held for at least 10 years to then be acquitted on the grounds of it being a “legitimately-elected government” paving the way to some sort of diplomatic empowerment.[17]

5. Israel is depending more on US pressure groups such as AIPAC and republican members of congress whilst side-lining the US government and the congress’s democratic composition in the most recent row over Iran’s nuclear programme.[18] Internationally, its previous Foreign Minister and fraudster, Avigdor Lieberman was considered just too racist to be received as a representative diplomat, causing further marginalising of the illegal state.[19] Is there finally an understanding in the US that the racist sentiment is shared by the electorate? Yes, Netanyahu was awarded fully at the last election despite his “breach of International protocol” and criticism of Obama.12 Quite obviously, and despite the billions of dollars the US gives it in charity, no feeling of gratefulness or recognition has been created.

6. A ‘United Arab Front’ political party was formed only to counter the right-wing threat, gaining 14 seats in the Israeli 120-seat parliament (Knesset) for the first time, ahead of Yesh Atid and Kulanu, and crushing poverty stricken, ultra-fascist Yisrael Beitunu (six seats) and climbing to third place as a formidable element of political opposition,[20] and representation that cannot be overlooked (including Islamic parties). This is a trial to Israel’s (non) ‘democratic’ status now, pushing it into an awkward dilemma of whether to allow appropriate representation on part the Arab MPs, or to continue to suppress this expanding voice. Note that in the 2006 Knesset elections, Likud, the now ruling party was third place behind Kadima and Labor, and although we do not bank on the Israeli political system, the presence of Arab MPs is bound to agitate right-wing cranks and challenge their bigotism.

7. The two-state ‘solution’ is now in shambles after Netanyahu’s pre-election statement that a Palestinian state will never take place under his office,[21] and indeed the electorate’s preference. This contravenes the long standing position of the international community. For the Palestinians, it either justifies Hamas’ notoriously criticised position of not recognising Israel, or necessitates that the international community censors Israel just as it censored Hamas for demanding a Historic Palestine as opposed to the now obliterated 1967 territory plan. A promise for no state at least provides stability to the cause and is no doubt better than a perpetual empty promise of statehood; the latter being the case for 69 years. How is a ‘state’ truly realised, the question is now being asked? Are we to return to the original charter? Or maybe we should allow Palestinians to achieve statehood in the way they decide.

8. Palestinian recognition at the UN general assembly as ‘an Observer State’ was only motivated by Israel’s extremist right-wing policies. [22] Yes, this achievement is largely symbolic, but it may help re-establish ‘Palestine’ as a reality that is not going anywhere.

9. History witnesses to the liberation of Palestine under the crudest of regimes: ʿUmar (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhu) entered Palestine when it was under the rule of East Byzantium, then Salāh al-Dīn at the great battle of Hittin against the Crusaders after the latter had massacred 70,000 of Jerusalem’s inhabitants alone, then the Mamluk’s from the Tataar (Mongolians) at the great battle of ‘Ain Jālūt. Only when Salāh al-Dīn withdrew displaying happiness that Jerusalem was liberated, and Imām al-‘Iz b. ‘Abd al-Salām swore by Allāh ten times at the pulpit that the Mamlukes would drive out the Tatār did this envelope. So the gloomier the scene becomes, the more determinant the Ummah will become and the closer to its retirement Israel will encroach.

Israel's dominance over Palestinian destiny is fueled by Arab weakness

Whereas Arab leaders before would make repeated allusions to the great Muslim leader Salahuddin al-Ayoubi who defeated the Crusaders and recaptured Jerusalem in 1187, they never lived up to his legacy. In attempting to claim leadership of the Arab world, they would often use and abuse the Palestinian cause, while rarely taking their Palestinian brothers into account. In fact, Arab leaders had less in common with Salahuddin, and more in common with Abu Jahal – a man renowned for his staggering ignorance and boorishness who lived in Arabia at the birth of Islam.

Not only has that discrete aspect of failed and disunited Arab leadership remained a feature of the modern Middle East, and a defining feature of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, but the abuse of the Palestinian cause continues unabated.

In Syria today, we see Lebanese Shia jihadists such as Hezbollah siding with Bashar al Assad’s Baathist dictatorship and its partner, Iran. They then slaughter Syrians calling for freedom en masse, claiming that everyone who is against them is in fact an agent of Zionism and that they are killing the “traitors” in order to one day liberate Palestine.

Someone ought to hand Hezbollah’s Hassan Nasrallah and Assad a map, and show them where Israel and Palestine are, before asking them to explain how butchering Syrians contributes to the liberation of the Palestinians.

Egypt, on the other hand, has entirely abandoned the masquerade of liberating Palestine. Instead, the military dictatorship of Abdel Fattah al-Sisi is busy repressing Egyptians while blocking the lifelines that normal people in Gaza rely on to survive – under the guise of crippling Hamas. In other words, Egypt is a critical Israeli ally in its repeated aggressions against the Palestinians, and an integral part of the siege on Gaza.

Is it any surprise, then, that the Arabs are still losing half a century after Israel inflicted such a catastrophic defeat on them? Hardly.

Former long-term hunger striker Muhammad Allan among 11 Palestinians seized by Israeli occupation forces

Former Palestinian prisoner and long-term hunger striker, lawyer Muhammad Allan, was seized once more by Israeli occupation forces in a series of pre-dawn raids throughout occupied Palestine.

Allan was seized from his home in the village of Einabus, Nablus and taken to an unknown destination. He was previously released in 2015 after a 66-day hunger strike against his imprisonment without charge or trial under administrative detention that drew worldwide support and solidarity.

He was among at least 11 Palestinians seized overnight by occupation forces, reported Ma’an News.

In Madama, Ahmad Nizar Ziyadah and Aseed Abdel-Nasser Qit were seized by occupation forces. Qit is a university student currently completing his final exams prior to graduation. In Anabta near Jenin, Omar Sari Ibrahim, 18, a student at an-Najah University, was seized by occupation forces, while Ahmad Abdel-Hadi Qishta was seized in Qalqilya.

In the Bethlehem village of Tuqu, occupation forces seized Muhannad Hajahjah, while they seized Iyad Abu al-Awra in al-Khader village. At least three Palestinian children were seized in Jerusalem and accused of “throwing stones” toward Israeli occupation police, and at least one Palestinian was seized in al-Khalil.

Palestinian women prisoners continue struggle, achieve concessions to their demands, lawyer reports

08-06-2017:..Palestinian women prisoners said that the Israel Prison Service conceded to their demands following their protests, said lawyer Taghreed Jahshan after meeting with Palestinian women prisoners in HaSharon prison on Thursday, 8 June.

Palestinian activist Amna Hamid spoke in Gaza City at an event in solidarity with the Palestinian women prisoners organized by Mohja al-Quds Foundation, emphasizing the importance of continuous international solidarity with the Palestinian women prisoners. “The prisoners’ demands are clearly legitimate. They are rejecting the repressive policy of the occupation against the prisoners. There is no secret of the inhumane violations of the occupation against the prisoners, especially under interrogation and of medical neglect.” She called for international sanctions on the occupation to support the prisoners’ struggle.

Former prisoner Lena Jerbouni, the longest-held woman Palestinian prisoner before her release in April, said that Palestinian women prisoners were committed to achieve their rights and were under attack during Ramadan, a time that is precious to the prisoners. She described the collective experience of the women prisoners in preparing iftar together, saying that the women “work like bees” to distribute roles and tasks to all prisoners, even the minor girls, in preparing the meal to break the fast.

Raafat Hamdouna of the Palestinian Prisoners’ center for Studies said that Palestinian women who are transferred with or near Israeli criminal prisoners are targeted for abuse, insults and attacks. He also noted that Palestinian women prisoners are held in overcrowded sections and rooms and are often prevented from receiving important materials, including textbooks and other materials for studies, from parents and relatives. In addition, the food they receive is very bad and they must often rely almost entirely on the “canteen” (prison store.) He emphasized the long history of Palestinian women in the national liberation struggle, including in the Palestinian prisoners’ movement. “Palestinian women have been subject to arrest and deportation, house arrest and abuse in prisons. They have fought many struggles, protests and open hunger strikes in order to improve the conditions of their lives and livelihoods, and to confront the policies of repression to which they are subject by the occupation,” Hamdouna said.

23 Palestinians seized in past two days by occupation forces including former Minister of Prisoners

Over the past two days, over 23 Palestinians have been seized by Israeli occupation forces, including a number of re-arrested former prisoners, student leaders and former Palestinian Authority minister of prisoners Wasfi Kabha. Kabha was seized by Israeli occupation forces who invaded his Jenin home in a pre-dawn raid on Monday, 12 June. The seizure came only 50 days after he was last released from Israeli occupation prisons after a year of imprisonment.

Israel reduces sentence of soldier who killed Palestinian teenager

An Israeli court in Jerusalem yesterday charged a border policeman for killing a Palestinian teenager in 2014 reducing his sentence from manslaughter following a plea bargain.

Israeli border police officer Ben Deri was originally indicted on charges of manslaughter in the 15 May 2014 killing of 17-year-old Nadeem Nawara and 22-year-old and Muhammad Abu Taher. The indictment accused Deri of knowingly firing live ammunition with intent to cause “serious injury, while foreseeing the possibility of causing death”, however in December 2016, the prosecution said it would offer Deri a plea deal to the lesser charge of negligence, claiming he was unaware there were live munitions in his rifle magazine.

Freedom denied: Three years on the re-arrest of released prisoners from the Wafa al-Ahrar exchange

Dozens of Palestinian prisoners released in 2011 in the Wafa al-Ahrar prisoner exchange have been imprisoned once more for over three years. 18 June 2017 marked the third anniversary of the seizure of 74 Palestinian prisoners released in the exchange agreement by Israeli occupation forces in mass arrests throughout Jerusalem and the West Bank in 2014.

Nearly 60 of these Palestinian prisoners have had their original sentences reimposed under Article 186 of Israeli Military Order 1651, which created a special military committee to arbitrarily re-impose sentences upon former prisoners released in the exchange, usually on the basis of “secret evidence” or allegations of “violating their terms of release,” usually on the basis of “association” with prohibited organizations, which include all major Palestinian political parties.

Support from the USA to Israel is not unlimited, the forces driving the democratic party, and what they are counting on to get back in power, are the least supporting of Israel.

Although a majority of Americans still view Israel favorably, support is declining among younger Americans and especially among the black and Latino population.
“Shared values are the bedrock of our relationship, and young Americans do not believe Israel shares our values,” Fern Oppenheim, one of the group’s co-founders, told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. “That’s a huge issue. We have to have a narrative about the heart and soul and humanity of the Israelis.”

The survey was carried out between September and October 2016 by polling firm Global Strategy Group on behalf of Brand Israel, and sampled 2,600 Americans across a range of demographic groups.

It found that while older Americans, Republicans and men were more likely to view Israel approvingly, the opposite was the case for Millennials, Democrats, women, as well as African-American and Latino Americans.

Emboldened by Trump, Israel pushes on with East Jerusalem settlement plans

03-07-2017: Israel is pushing forward with controversial plans to build 1,800 new settlement housing units in occupied East Jerusalem in the largest proposed surge in construction in recent years.

The plans are expected to be considered by the Jerusalem district planning committee this month. If approved, they would mark an end to the relative slowdown in Israeli construction in the eastern parts of the city.

Israel’s rightwing government appears to have been emboldened by the pro-Israel stance of the Trump administration, which has been far more muted in its criticism of settlements than its predecessor.

When the Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu met Donald Trump in Washington earlier this year, the US president issued a weakly-worded request that Netanyahu limit settlement activity.

The disclosure of the East Jerusalem plans by the Peace Now group came as Netanyahu approved proposals to allow Israeli MPs to once again visit the flashpoint Temple Mount-Haram al-Sharif complex on a five-day trial, starting this month.

Anti-Terrorism Fantasy Camps Become Tourist Attraction In Israel

Apparently, half a dozen of fantasy terror camps have popped up throughout Israel and the West Bank, offering tourists from across the globe a chance to pretend-kill terrorists, who look suspiciously like Palestinian Arabs, only for $115 per person.

These facilities allow visitors to train like IDF soldiers and act in a variety of stimulated situations — including an explosion at a Jerusalem marketplace, a stabbing attack, a sniper tournament and a live demonstration with attack dogs.

The two-hour “training camp,” which is frankly part-propaganda and part-morbid amusement, provides travelers “a taste of the Israeli military experience,” according to Haaretz.

Caliber 3 in the Israeli settlement bloc of Gush Etzion in the West Bank is reportedly the most popular of all these “anti-terror” camps. IDF Colonel Sharon Gat established the facility, which later inspired several others across the country, back in 2003. He said approximately 15,000 to 25,000 tourists visit Caliber 3 each year and the majority of the visitors are American Jews.

However, in recent years, these military stimulation sites, which do nothing but promote the anti-Palestinian sentiment, have also gained massive popularity among travelers from Brazil, Argentina, France, Italy, Russia and China — even those who are on work-related trips and religious pilgrimages.

Israel evicts Palestinian family after half a century in Jerusalem home

06-08-2017:The Shamasneh family have lived in the same home in East Jerusalem's Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood for fifty years, but now face imminent eviction to make way for Israeli settlers.
East Jerusalem was occupied by Israel in 1967, and later annexed into Israel in the 1980s. Around 200,000 Israeli Jews now live in East Jerusalem in settlement homes considered illegal under international law.

Rights groups say Israeli authorities seek to change the demographics of East Jerusalem to pre-empt its division in future peace talks.

This often involves a house-by-house struggle to evict Palestinians.

"Fifty-three years here means leaving is not easy - it is a lifetime. I was a young girl when I came to this house," said 75-year-old Fahamiya Shamasneh.

Israel's Supreme Court has ruled that the family have until Wednesday to vacate the home, but the family are reluctant to leave amid the looming deadline.

US outnumbered 14 to 1 as it vetoes UN vote on status of Jerusalem

A UN security council resolution calling for the withdrawal of Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital has been backed by every council member except the US, which used its veto.

The unanimity of the rest of the council was a stark rebuke to the Trump administration over its unilateral move earlier this month, which upended decades of international consensus.

The Egyptian-drafted resolution did not specifically mention the US or Trump but expressed “deep regret at recent decisions concerning the status of Jerusalem”.

A spokesman for the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, responded to the veto by saying it was “unacceptable and threatens the stability of the international community because it disrespects it”.

The UK and France had indicated in advance that they would back the text, which demanded that all countries comply with pre-existing UNSC resolutions on Jerusalem, dating back to 1967, including requirements that the city’s final status be decided in direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.

UN Jerusalem vote: General Assembly rules against US, declaring recognition of Israel capital 'null and void'

In a humiliating blow for Donald Trump on the world stage, the United Nations General Assembly has voted by 128 to nine to declare his controversial decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital “null and void”.

Just days after the US used its veto power at the UN Security Council to block a similar measure, the General Assembly resoundingly condemned the America’s unilateral action, which most observers said would hamper efforts to secure peace in the Middle East.

While the vote has little practical impact – it is not legally binding – it is a considerable embarrassment for the US as it reflects global opinion.

As the US licked its wounds, Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas’s spokesman Nabil Abu Rdainah seized on what he said was a “victory for Palestine”.

“We will continue our efforts in the United Nations and at all international forums to put an end to this occupation, and to establish our Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital,” Mr Rdainah said.

Thirty-five countries, many in Africa and Latin America, abstained from the vote.

Experts had predicted at least 150 votes in support of the motion. There was speculation that the high number of abstentions was a result of the Trump administration’s threat to “take names” of countries and cut off humanitarian aid funding.

For what I hear, the protests about the metal detectors at the entrance of the mosque were more numerous than the protests for the movement of the capital.

Nearly half of Israeli Jews believe in ethnic cleansing, survey finds

Almost half of Jewish Israelis believe Arabs should be "expelled or transferred" from Israel, a survey has found.

A study carried out by the Pew Research Centre found that around one in five adults questioned “strongly agreed” with the controversial statement, which amounts to ethnic cleansing under some definitions.

The Encyclopaedia Britannica describes the act as “attempting to create ethnically homogeneous geographic areas through the deportation or forcible displacement of persons belonging to particular ethnic group”, while a United Nations report in 1993 additionally specified the use of “force or intimidation”.
