Quran at the top of Immanuel Kant’s PhD! Immanuel Kant is one of those big names you hear about in Enlightenment philosophy. His works are arguably some of the most difficult ones to get through, but the insights he offers are invaluable. This is a scan of the PhD diploma he earned from the University of Königsberg. Note the very top of it where it says in Arabic “In the Name of God, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful”. The reason I share this is because it symbolizes something. Western education is Eurocentric. It leaves one who gets through it with the impression that rationality and progress began through some means of immaculate conception. It doesn’t recognize that had it not been for Muslims translating, writing commentaries, and teaching the works of Greek philosophy, and for Europeans wishing to study having to first study Arabic, they wouldn’t have known much about Aristotle and Socrates. The presence of this Arabic text on top of this document represents a remnant of the influence Muslims had on European intellectualism and education before the Europeans erased it and pretended to be saviours of Muslims from their supposed barbarism when they turned around and colonized their lands and stole their resources - Mohamed Ghilan
