It'd been over 150 posts coming... -----------Breen Breen---Breen--Breen---Breen Breen---Breen--Breen---Breen --------Breen--Breen Of course, it would take a whole lot of money to assemble this team of superstars - only Chelsea could afford them - and since Jose loves his 4-3-3, it would probably be: -----------Breen------------ Breen---Breen--Breen---Breen -----------Breen------------ --------Breen--Breen-------- ---Breen------------Breen--- -----------Breen------------ Alas, we can only dream... of a team of Gary Breen's.
I pick Rio over Bramble. Someone already mentioned Carew, but I am going to go with Cisse in place of Asamoah. I had not heard Hasselbank for awhile, but considered him as an option if he is still fit. Seedorf can also played on the left.
I was thinking about this for ages during uni today. It's funny how you just forget things. I'd still play Bramble (someone has to like him) but Seedorf on the left, only until next season when N'Zogbia will be better, and probably Carew instead of Asamoah since Cisse can't hit a cows arse with a banjo at the moment
In Zamorano's case, he would have played better for Chile and Real. Ronaldo would have played better for Brazil but I'm not sure on the other teams. In this case, I don't think Ruben Sosa played better for any other team although he had a very good stint with Lazio. What position in defence did Aldair play in? By the sound of things, he didn't play at left back.
Is Crew even that good anymore? I remember seeing him in action for Valencia a few years back and he looked good.
I had another idea for an interesting XI: an all-time "Capped Brothers" XI. The general idea: build the XI out of pairs (or sets) of brothers who have been capped at senior international level; also no one can be in the XI without his brother also in the XI. (Since it's XI, obviously there needs to be a set of three brothers who have all been capped.) Here's what I've got: ---------------------H. Klodt ---- F. de Boer ---- J. Charlton ---- Socrates B. Klodt - R. de Boer - R. Arveladze - Rai - B. Charlton ----------A. Arveladze -------- S. Arveladze Arveladze brothers (Georgia, 1990s): Revaz (MF) Archil (FW) Shota (FW) (My Google searching has only found two other sets of 3: the Selim brothers who played for Egypt in the 1950s and 60s, and the Gordon brothers who played for Ireland in the 1890s.) Charlton brothers (England, 1960s): Jack (DF) Bobby (MF) Oliveira brothers (Brazil, 1980s): Socrates (DF) Rai (MF) De Boer brothers (Netherlands, 1990s): Frank (DF) Ronald (MF) Klodt brothers (West Germany, 1950s): Hans (GK) Bernhard (MF) On the bench: the Ravelli brothers (Sweden), the Laudrup brothers (Denmark), the Neville brothers (England), and the Hassan brothers (Egypt).
Incidentally, since Hislop was born in England and plays for Trinidad & Tobago, he fills in the GK spot on the "Immigrants XI" from the first page as a player who played at senior international level but never represented his country of birth.
Don't forget the Romanian Nunweiler dynasty. Couple of German capped brothers: - Karl-Heinz & Michael Rummenigge - Klaus & Thomas Allofs - Erwin & Helmut Kremers - Karl-Heinz & Bernd Förster
Sócrates as left back?! He was a right midfielder, and an excellent one at that His brother Raí was also a RM, although he played practically as a forward in his stint with São Paulo
Perhaps Google needs to get its act together better: Christian Vieri (Italy) Max Vieri (Australia). Both strikers.
Oops, I'm being dyslexic. I meant Socrates at right back. It's hard to make this set of players a tactically solid XI if both brothers from each pair have to play at the same time, when almost half of them were right mids. Unfortunately, I have to use the Arveladze brothers, since no set of three that I can find is better, and I'd rather field three decent internationals and miss out on Vieri than get Vieri and play with 10 men (who's the third brother?). And, OK, I can see Nico and Robert Kovac removing the Nevilles from the bench. Does anyone else want to try coming up with a better Capped Brothers XI (and I mean the full lineup)?
Why the hell are the Laudrup brothers on the bench? They were the best pair of brothers of them all, both in terms of talent and success. Here's my XI. F De Boer won't be in his right spot, I don't want the Nevilles in defence because they aren't too great and I don't know too much about the Kovac brothers. I really want the Laudrups to be in it for reasons stated above. ---------------------H. Klodt ---- R De Boer ---- J. Charlton ---- F De Boer B. Klodt ---- R. Arveladze - B Laudrup - B. Charlton ----------A. Arveladze ---- M Laudrup ---- S. Arveladze
The laudrup brothers are better than them. Socrates was a great player, but I rated Michael Luadrup better. Rai was overrated in my opinion and Brian was better. So any luck on three capped brothers?
Absolutely! The Laudrups are much better. I agree with Excape Goat. Michael Laudrup is better than Socrates. Not just in terms of talent but also in success. Michael was successful with Juve, Barca and Real whereas Socrates struggled at Fiorentina. Laudrup had two wonderful World Cups in 1986 and 1998 and Socrates who was captain in 1982 and did play in 82 and 86, he was very good for Brazil but he didn't influence his national team like Michael did. Rai was a huge thing at Sao Paolo but once he went to PSG, he wasn't the same. He struggled at USA 94 and I consider him as an underachiever. Brian was very successful with Ajax and Rangers after an average time in Italy. He was also a part of Denmark's Euro 92 winning team. In terms of success, Michael and Brian are more successful than Socrates and Rai and there is more to it than Rai's lack of success after leaving Sao Paolo.
Some more dutch contenders: Edward & John Metgod Ronald & Erwin Koeman Frank & Ronald De Boer Willy & Rene Van De Kerkhof Rob & Richard Witschge Arnold & Gerrie Muhren
