Chambers might be worse than Mustafi.

Yeah. I wouldn't doubt it. Neither is good enough. That's what I meant by "the mess we find ourselves in"

Seeing claims that Ceballos has passed his medical and signed off on the loan deal. No buy option but rumors that we will have right to match any offer next summer assuming Real decide to sell after the loan.

My spiciest take is that Mustafi is underrated

Any word yet on whether the Asensio injury will scuttle this? I'm reading mixed things.

Ugh. What's the word on ascensio... cruciate??

Maybe if our MF loan gets scuttled, they can switch it to a CB loan? ;)

I wouldn't think so. They play different positions entirely.

Yeah, reading now that it's more likely to scuttle Bale's move.

He's still our best passing CB now, I kinda wonder how much value of his fcuk-ups that recovers

I'm not saying I'm cool with him being our starter, just that his fcuk-ups are highly noticeable compared to those of someone in a less critical position or somebody who just does everything at a subpar level all game, which is a big reason why there's a pile-on IMO

I don't think characterizing him as Arsenal's best passing CB passes either the eye test or the statistical test. He makes to many passes that put the receiving player under immediate pressure, and is prone to making bad passes in dangerous areas. Statistically, Kos, Sokratis, and Holding all completed both a greater percentage of all their passes and a greater percentage of their long passes.

I think a lot of his ********ups are confidence related, because he just isn't proactive in situations. That seems like a confidence/coaching issue.

Seeing some reports that we are expected to pursue (transfer or loan???) Rugani from Juventus now that they have purchased de Ligt.

Is there any other player in Arsenal history that has gone from super vilified to pretty good player?

    Monreal sorta?

I hope you're right about Mustafi. He may be overcommitting because he's afraid of doing the big eff-up, which is in turn doing the big eff-up. I can relate.

Defensively Mustafi has two weaknesses, he loses vision on players in the box and he's to rash, he overcommits. Regarding the latter, I don't think its a confidence issue, he's trying to make the big play every time. I think he loses vision on players in the box, because he is focused on the ball, he's looking to make the saving tackle. If he were short on confidence I don't think he would sprint into the midfield and overcommit on an attempted tackle, leaving his teammates to cover for him the best they can. He doesn't do this because he's afraid the player is going to beat him 1 v 1, its because he wants to be the hero.

Gervinho was pretty vilified, he ended up doing okay at Roma. Maybe that is a reason why someone should take a chance on Mustafi. Change of scenery could be big for him.

Coquelin? He wasn't vilified, but he was an afterthought, recalled from a loan Charlton due to an injury crisis, ended up forming a solid partnership with Cazorla for a few years. He's probably a better example for what Chambers could be.

True, though I was more meaning players that stayed at Arsenal and went from vilified to good player. Coq in my memory was never really vilified, cause he was never really first team until he came back from loan.

Mustafi is not a good passer. I’ve read the assertion that he is a few times and I’m just not seeing it. He gives the ball away a lot for a center half and puts his teammates under unnecessary pressure way too often. He tries a lot of line-breaking passes, but rarely completes them. And as far as I can tell there’s no data that says I’m wrong.

And he gets beat in one on one challenges for long balls so easily and so often that we’re giving up big chances for no reason once or twice a game.

And on top of it all, Chambers (who everyone is convinced is the slowest human of all time) raced past him trying to cover one of those situations in the Fiorentina match. I mean just destroyed him for pace. Either Mustafi is significantly slower than Chambers or he just wasn’t trying. Not great either way.

    Mustafi sucks.
