This sounds like good news, but then I remember how last season ended. I know how good he is, I know what he has done for us, but part of me worries that his breaking down at the end of last season, basically costing us CL, might not have been a blip. It was like his Spain form became his normal form.

He didn't cost us a place in the cl. Unfair if you are laying this solely at his feet

He had a bad 6 months and to be fair was playing for a team that was so poor he basically had no room for slip ups. Anyone that doesn't think he's elite still is crazy. Especially at his age with no real injury history.

DeGea will get back to his best, being part of shi8 dressing for so long does have some knockdown effects..

You could. Especially when he was directly responsible for so many goals.

From my point of view, Dave's form at the end of this past season validates completely van Gaal's decision to bench him when he was going thru the stuff with Real when he was on the brink of a move there a few years back.
Dave is a great keeper but when there is any kind of uncertainty or issue, like a contract dispute/negotiation for instance, he does not seem able to compartmentalize it as other players would and ultimately it has an adverse effect on him and his game.
it was very obvious in his game and overall body language towards the end of last season. It's one of those things unfortunately. I'm very confident however that once he signs his new contract, we'll see the player we're accustomed to: strong, confident and the best keeper in the game at the moment.
Any doubts about him going into this season would be entirely valid if he does not sign a new contract IMO.

His poor form started in March.

I would still bet big dollars that he saved us more points than he cost us over the course of the whole season.

That is when our league form went to crap though. Was he the only reason? Of course not. But he was a rock, who turned into an open door. He wasn't letting in goals, he was basically throwing them in himself.

Problem with that line of thinking is that you are ignoring the great saves he made during that time as well, which a majority of goalies wouldnt make. He missed some easy shots during that span which were highly publicized but basically the net result was that he was average during that span when before he was elite.

You say he cost us the CL spot, but one could say we were only in reach for a CL spot because of his play during the first half of the year.

At that time, he wasn't making great saves. De Gea didn't start playing normally. He started playing really, really bad.

Dave agrees to a new contract with United.

Making him the highest paid keeper in the game in the process. Pretty amazing that we've managed to hang onto him twice now when he was on the verge to leaving. The market was favorable to us this time around, but we've definitely had good fortune on our side in our dealings with him.
And as previously stated, I see him going back to his customary elite form in very short order.

His extension will be our deadline day signing. Woody will try to use it to mask his failure.

They can't even do this right. The timing is so transparently cynical that it'll negate all the goodwill it would have brought.

They've prepped us with that kind of stuff all summer, with the announcements of AP and Tuanzebe's renewals at very strategic and deliberate times during the summer. Same went for Butt's new job and responsabilities and so on.
When it was announced a couple of weeks back that Dave would sign a new contract after the club returned from preseason tour, the odds were always good that it might happen towards the end of the window or right on deadline day. Very, very predictable behavior from the club at this point.

This when will Dave sign a new contract saga has become a recurrent theme at this point and a bit of an annoying one, if we're being perfectly honest. It was announced on tour that he was on the verge on putting pen to paper on a new contract, once the team got back. Yet, it still hasn't happened.
Really wonder what the hold up is at this juncture. He appears to have been given everything he wanted: he's not only set to be the highest paid goalkeeper in the game, but one of the very top ones in the Prem also. He looks to have been named vice captain behind AY (making him essentially the skip).
Despite all that, still nothing in way of United locking him down. We've gone thru this all season last term and can't really have that again, especially with his contract actually running down this time. Really hoping we'll get some good news soon in that regard.

not a matter of if anymore. he holds all the cards.

at this point we're basically hoping he is a nice guy who has developed some attachment to United

I think it's signed, they're just waiting on the announcement for some reason. His and club's social media postings have been too deliberate to think otherwise.

Why is it taking this much time to announce if it's already signed?

As one of the people who was staunchly in his corner at the end of last year I will say that after this week's mistake I'm officially getting quite concerned. Maybe getting the deal inked will end this, but we're starting to go beyond a blip at this point. Only positive is that if he had any thought to running down his contract this will surely be making him and his agent think twice.
