http://edition.cnn.com/2011/11/24/sport/american-samoa-soccer/index.html?hpt=hp_t3 Interesting on 2 levels- 1) Am Samoa is a territory of the USA- they are part of us. 2) 4th place in concacaf hex plays Oceania winner. You never know.
The 3d interesting aspect is that Thomas Rongen is the coach! Thanks for posting the link. Made me smile.
Where in the World is Thomas Rongen? Now we know. More detail: http://sports.yahoo.com/soccer/news?slug=ap-wcup-americansamoawins
Good 'ol Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Samoa_national_soccer_team At least 3 current high school players on the 23-man roster. One fellow from Pacific Lutheran University in the USA. Lot's or "free agents" unaffiliated with any club. The nation's all-time caps leader is Nicky Salapu, with 14. He was the goalkeeper in the infamous 31-0 loss to Australia 10 years ago.
Good for them. Still, Tonga is ranked 202nd in the world (anyone remember the Tonga kid of wrestling fame?). A game between two teams ranked in the 200's, someone had to win. Kind of like Anguilla playing Montserrat.
American Samoa. . . I remember maybe 3 months ago, someone came on here talking about American Samoa's status as a FIFA nation, how they got to be an individual FIFA nation, and how his dad was the president and founder of the American Samoa F.A. Does anyone remember that thread and have a link? I'm pretty sure it was in USA MEN. And if this isn't the right forum, please delete this post.
Re: American Samoa. . . This probably isn't the right forum, but you might want to start searching here: https://www.google.com/search?gcx=w&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=site:bigsoccer.com+samoa
They may never meet again considering Australia no longer plays in Oceania. American Samoa blew the lead and drew 1-1 with Cook Islands while the other game was also 1-1. American Samoa needs a win against host Samoa to advance to the eight team OFC Nations Cup while Samoa advances with a win or draw. Cook Islands and Tonga are eliminated. The group winner will play Tahiti on June 3, Vanuatu on June 5, and New Caledonia on June 7.
We have 3 other siblings in fifa: Guam, US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. Imagine a "US Siblings" Forum on BS.
Guam's federation is associated with Asia not Oceania. They are rated 42 out of 46 in Asia. They should be in Oceania based on location. If they were then maybe they could compete in more events. As it is now, they are practically dormant. However they are rated 189 out of 208. edit: actually Guam is not close to anyone http://www.distancefromto.net/distance-from/American+Samoa/to/Guam
American Samoa has bowed out of WC qualifying with a narrow loss to Samoa, 1-0. Despite the loss, they should be very proud of their accomplishments and hopefully this means good things for the future.
I know Guam is in Asia, but it doesn't change the fact that they didn't attempt qualifying. I'm looking forward to the December FIFA Rankings to see where American Samoa and Samoa end up.
They do but aren't a member of FIFA and I'm surprised nobody has mentioned that this team has a transexual.
