Depends on how he wins it. If Argentina wins it, but Messi doesn't really contribute, than no.
If Argetina wins, but Messi contributes greatly, maybe...

Depends how he performs in that WC victory. If he stands out, I think it's a fair comparison.

Same thing with Cristiano Ronaldo although in this case he would have to carry Portugal ala Maradona did in '86 (because Portugal is not as stacked as Argentina). Messi really needs to shine big time though above all the other solid players in his squad.

Yeah if he contributes greatly. I should have specified that.
What country/countries are you rooting for?

Argentina would have to win and Messi would have to score 5+ goals and lead them as the centerpiece and come up big against big teams to be even compared to Diego. Remember maradonna took Argentina to a second final in 1990

It all depends on how he perform in this world cup. He is just 26 right now and I think he still have long way to go for his team.

I thought it was Argentinas goalkeeper that took them to the final in 1990

Chances are very slim. Their first performance was pretty dire

    Equal Maradona sure

Equal Pele? not really, needs at least 1 more WC to equal Pele.. Pele performed equally as good at club as Messi and won 2 World Cups, the third one Brazil won that he was on the roster he only played 2 games then got injured.

but because since most of the people that have watched Pele play don't use the internet or have well.. died... Messi would take over as the new generation best player ever.

    I would say never ...
Pele clubs > Messi clubs (look at his all games in bog games, besides Santos << Barca)
Messi never had any WC performance close to Pele - hope he will match Pele's WC70 this time?
Pele at WC58 was ONE and THE ONLY time ... no comparable

No. If the REAL Ronaldo doesn't come close to those 2 than how can Messi?

Even though we know there is no comparison, but let's take a look at
Pele and Messsi heatmap at WC level vs their goals + assists for the team:

It's seriously unfair comparing Messi to Pele, I mean Messi would need to score 40 goals each year for the rest of his career until he's like 35 to reach Pele right?

Goals wise yes. But Maradona is often compared with Pele and you know he scored far fewer goals than Pele

Messi will never be on the level of Pele and Maradona, talent wise he already is. But Maradona and Pele were and are big names outside of the games because of their personalities and how they related to the fans and their countrymen outside of the game. They were and are ambassadors of the game and Messi is just not that type of person. Argentinians will be happy with him if he wins a world cup especially corrupt Julio Grondona but they will still hold Maradona in higher regard. Same thing goes for Pele, is been 40 years since he last played in a world cup yet he is still the biggest name in football.

So far unimpressive displays by Messi in the key games and even throughout the WC despite some moments of brilliance with some nice goals but otherwise he just disappears. He was a complete no show in this semi-final just like the quarter-final and lucky for him somehow the team still scrapes through otherwise he would've been completely ripped apart for this and deservedly so. This reminds me of his no shows for Barca in the last few key games of the season. Let's see what he does in the final now...good luck with the Germans.

because very few could have scored near 1GPG at WC, and NO ONE could have made 9ass/12games a WC level like him
because he was the only one winning 3 WCs 40years ago and ... probably another 40years later
