Favorite flavors. B&J's Karamel Sutra. Edy's Dreamery Strawberryfields. Häagen-Dazs Mango Edy's Dreamery Chocolate truffle explotion. Plus gelato. There are lots of Espresso shops here in Chicago that serve homemead gelato.
Ben & Jerry's One Sweet Whirled B&J Makin Whoopie Pie Dreamery New York Strawberry Cheesecake Breyers Vanilla Bean Any brand of the orange and cream stuff that tastes like a creamsicle. And Edy's Whole Fruit Strawberry Sorbet, though it isn't really ice cream.
Most of B&J's specialty flavors, like The Full Vermonty, are my favorites. My girlfriend gave me an ice cream machine for Christmas and, thanks to the B&J's recipe book and a bit of imagination, I've made some pretty good ice cream, and it's very easy to make. The texture isn't as creamy as Haagen-Dazs or B&Js, but it's better than most of the cheaper brands. The best flavor I've made is the Starbucks-inspired gingerbread latte. Works great in the winter because, while the ice cream is cold, the gingebread spices have a warming quality to them. The best part: If she complains about me gaining weight from it, she's got no one but herself to blame!
The local creameries always have the best ice cream. Bruster's Chocolate Raspberry Truffle is my favorite - Godiva's is a rough second. Exactly what is the difference between ice cream and gelato? After trying gelato, I was convinced it means "expensive ice cream for suckers" in Italian.
Store bought: Safeway Select, Kirkland Signature, Breyer's for flavored stuff Shops: Coldstone Creamery, accept no subsitutes.
Gelato has less milkfat than ice cream, but at the same time, less air whipped into it, so it comes out tasting just as rich. You'll also find ingredients like ricotta cheese in some gelatos. My favorites: Ben & Jerry's Ooey Gooey Cake (retired now) Ben & Jerry's Bovinity Divinity (ditto) Ben & Jerry's Concession Obsession Jerseymaid Moose Tracks A good old-fashioned Dairy Queen Butterfinger or Oreo Blizzard I hear great things about Turkey Hill brand ice cream, too, but it's not available here.
Gotta respectfully disagree. Gelato tastes too watered down. It tastes like cheaper versions of ice cream with reduced butterfat content. For me Edy's and Haagen Daas make the best ice creams. Fav's Edy's ice cream sundae Haagen Daas chocolate swiss almond
There are some variations of gelato. There is the cheap wanna be kind. It all depends where you get it. In my experiance good gelato is rich and very creamy. The local Italian shop in my old neighboorhood made just about some of the best gelato I've ever had. And Gelato flavors are not you're typical ice cream flavors. That Häagen-Dazs gelato isn't all that bad but it's not your typical gelato.
I live in northern NJ and have worked in NYC for years. Had it in many restaurants, and local shops. Real Italian style. Personally it's not the same as ice cream. I much prefer ice cream over gelato.
True it's not the same. But for me there is room for both. Gelato is made in some flavors that you don't get in ice cream. All I was s aying is that when made right gelato can be very good.
so true... best gelato out there: berthillon - this little gelato place just south of the notre dame cathedral in paris on the ile de la cité. so good but if you think of going there during a sunny summer day...forget about it. the lines are insane.
Store bought--B&J's Karmel Sutra is awesome. Right in Haleiwa Town you will find world famous Matsumoto's shave ice. And just down the street is the best ice cream anywhere. Flavormania is the best ice cream I've had anywhere, ever.
Unfortunately we didn't stop at Matsumoto's when I was there but I did have some shave ice in Hale'iwa in a small shopping plaza...some surf shop...the shopping plaza had a Patagonia store in it.
Saying that gelato is like ice cream is insulting to gelato. Best I ever had? This place - Gelataria Carabé
I have never even seen this flavor before but just the name sends a quiver of anticipation through my CENSORED
Coldstone Creamery is incredible. I've been making my own ice cream, I got a Cuisinart ice cream maker which is really easy to use. Vanilla ice cream is simple, and adding stuff to it (cookies, cookie dough, M&M's, strawberries, etc.) is really straightforward. The ice cream comes out great. I haven't had as much luck with chocloate ice cream, the consistency does not come out right -- it still tastes good but it's not creamy enough, it freezes up too solid.
That's the one I've got. Quality machine. I haven't tried chocolate because I'm more partial to vanilla-based flavors (oh, and the chocolate recipes require more work). I tried making a hazelnut mocha with coffee and some hazelnet cocoa mix, but it was a little bland.
20 posts, and not one mention of chocolate chip cookie dough, the ambrosia of the Gods!!!! Criminal, I say, criminal.
Just tried B&J's Uncanny Cashew, a new flavor. Didn't like it as much as I thought I would. The carmel cashews were delicious but the base was a sweet cream, not a vanilla, so it was a little bland.
I just bought an ice-cream maker. Any flavor suggestions for the first batch (easy and good)? Thanks!
Here's one: 2 eggs 3/4 cup sugar 2 cups heavy cream 1 cup milk 2 teaspoons vanilla extract. 3/4 cup coarsely chopped Mint Oreo cookies Crack the eggs into a bowl and whisk until light. Mix in the sugar a little bit at a time until the sugar and eggs are completely blended. Add the milk, cream and vanilla and whisk. Transfer that mixture to you ice cream maker and begin the freezing process. When it's about 5 minutes from completion, add in the Oreos. Total prep time is maybe 10 minutes.
