IIRC in Miami the emergency watch is triggered with 40 mph wind and/or 4” of rain forecast. How bad is there now?
Look at you being a tough guy, lookit John Wayne: "I'm not gonna cry about my pa. Gonna build a...hospital?
While get you, there is a balance. Back in the day when I was living in LA, there was a small brush fire which started behind my house in a wooded area. Small, just a bit of smoke, but enough that we could smell it. Moms went to grab the cats while I was packing up clothes, passport, and other easily accessible info. Meanwhile all my neighbors were outside just looking at the puffs of darker smoke become thicker. It was not until the first helicopter dropped some water that my neighbors started to pack up. But by then, the cats had been corralled, both cars were quickly packed with the emergencies, and we were probably about 5 minutes from locking up the house and heading down to the local coffee shop a couple miles away (and within sight). Nothing came of it, but better safe then sorry.
Word is that things are pretty grim in SE NC. The two interstates are or have been closed due to flooding. That part of the state is almost completely flat, so the good news is that unless you live right by a river, you won’t get really high flooding. The bad news is if an area is flooded, EVERYBODY’S house is flooded. You can’t go to Uncle Bob’s house. And because of development and lack of respect for wetlands, drainage will be slower than it would have been 30 years ago.

If I was african-american, you probably would have scored in the last two weeks I've had some negative interactions with the Oklahoma County Sheriff's office. Fuckin' Fat Fucks
Nope - Trying to get ahead of work before surgery Yeah, Cushing's has disabled my filter.. Instead of saying "Excuse me, can I get by..." It's "donuts are on the next aisle, Deputy Chubbs..." And, "Do you know how fast you were going?" "Yeah, I had the cruise control set at 75 and I forgot about your speed trap at the end of the turnpike" We'll see if he shows up in court
155 MPH winds at landfall. 4th strongest winds ever. Warm Gulf waters powered it Table of 10 strongest continental US landfalling #hurricanes on record as ranked by maximum sustained wind. #Michael ranks 4th with sustained winds of 135 knots (155 mph) at landfall. pic.twitter.com/eqfY0ocG4x— Philip Klotzbach (@philklotzbach) October 10, 2018
I’m now watching coverage in the weather channel and it looks like the Florida panhandle coast suffered heavy damage. If anything positive can come of this, is that hopefully northern Florida adopts the same building standards already in place in the south of the state.
Wait, what? They don't already have hurricane-resistant(hopefully) standards in place in the northern parts? I assumed every place prone to hurricanes has strict codes. @Funkfoot is this true of Louisiana, or am I wrong in my assumption?
Rick Scott was making the news rounds this AM and I think it was a CBS lady who said "Governor, I was told the shelters in the area were made to only withstand a Category 2 hurricane. Is that the case?" He smiled & said there will be national guard troops at the shelters.
Nope. Only Florida’s southern half - roughly- is considered part of the High Velocity Hurricane Zone. The northern part exempted themselves of meeting CAT 4 standards. Regarding other states, I know that Texas have some kind of requirement/certification but was mostly because insurance companies were not issuing policies for gulf towns after Galveston was flattened. And AFAIK, there are no strict standards in LA or AL... Maybe there are locally but at least not as comprehensive as in FL HVHZ..
