It was upgraded to a (gulp) Cat. 5 hurricane this morning. Heading to the Virgini Islands, P.R., Hispaniola and who knows in South FL. Let's hope it swings out to sea quick but all the models are showing due west tracking now.
Artists' rendition: (For people under the age of about thirty-five, that's from the James Bond move "The Spy Who Loved Me". For people younger than that who don't know who James Bond is, http://lmgtfy.com/?q=james+bond .)
A lot of things could happen, but I would expect South Florida to more or less withstand the impact of the storm. Yes, they will be damage, we will have no power for a while, we might have problems with supplies and they will be some flooding near the ocean, but overall the buildings newer than 1994 should do OK. I would be terrified to be in one of the smaller/poorer island countries, or north of the state where they still build with sticks and thanks to our legislature and the successful builders industry lobby, they are exempt from hurricanes.
Likely, areas that were added to the 2010 Florida Building Code update for wind uplift and areas that were removed by local authority
Oh sorry. That is the Florida Building Code 2010 Version map of what in theory buildings should be able to withstand, depending in their location. They made adjustments relative to 07 but I think the map pretty much stayed up the same for the 2014 (below) version and I don't think they are any major changes for the 2017 version.
Of course my idiot county.... I do know my roof has all the updated clips and nails and crap, they just neglected to replace the flashing on one wall and the other roofer was supposed to flash it and fix the shingles last week but it rained too much last week. Hopefully they can get to it this week.
Wunderground's latest composite... Unlike yesterday, there are at least a few models that have it heading out to sea rather than making one (or more) landfalls. Though alas for Coyote... Louisiana is ever further from contact... There are also a few more that have it trotting its remnants past me... EDIT: JUST saw Dapip... oh well. In case you missed it on the page turn... EDIT EDIT: Dapip's is the historical tracking. This is the newest ensemble models... EDIT EDIT EDIT: Just saw that Irma has its own thread... hence, moved...
I still have friends in Saba, Statia and St.Maarten. There is some pretty well built stuff intermingled with crap. The Dutch government will step in to repair if it gets bad.
FU. I hope it hits your mother's house. What kind of horrible person hopes for something like a category 5 hurricane hitting anywhere?
Bahamas, Bermuda and Barbados follow that pattern. I know that some/most of the new stuff is also FBC compliant..
I was able to get four packs of water bottles earlier today, so I went down to the "everything goes" market and came out stocked...
Whaddaya expect. Even some half-braindead Cajun who talks like a cross between a SEC linebacker and a Quebec Nordiques defensemen knows that he's been insulted when you tell him to "Go die in dat dere fi-yah ova deyah" Putta liddell bidda ahyn-yahn an peppa wid dem sree-i-ump!
Most likely not. I didn't have her embalmed, so you can probably gig her up and skull fuck her if you like. BigSoccer's Favorite Architect I told the cook that on a scale from Justin Wilson to a mason jar of catfish shit, he was Paul Prudhomme
That reminds me of a story someone told me about the hurricane that hit in 1998 or 99. The airport tower was taken out and they were radio-ing planes with some guy on a CB in a truck spray-painted the words "Tower." What makes it worse is the size of the Saba airport. Google an image of the Saba airport of look it up on YouTube and you will see what I mean.
