Free flowing games have always been harder for me to totally grasp the tactics at play during a game. I come from an American football background/fandom. It is essentially a series of set pieces that are easier to compartmentalize and grasp for me.

Basketball isn't to difficult, but hockey and soccer can be tough.

I enjoy the tactical side, but I can't say that I really see it while the game is going on. Can I tell when a team changes shape mid game and the other team fails to adapt? There is so much that happens and I wonder how much I might be missing.

Any advice or tips you have?

You could start by analizing counter attacking. Most goals from open play are scored on the break.
