With the US proving in qualifying that our youth system is superior to 3rd tier soccer countries like Mexico, how do we keep scouts from England, Italy, and Spain from stealing our tactics and talent? I am sure some might suggest that isn't going to happen, but after watching Mexico the past few years or England, Italy, and Spain during the world cup it is clear those countries lack the the technical or physical ability to compete in future world cups. One thought is we don't try to keep it a secret, instead maybe MLS can open youth academies in Europe and South America so their players can get access to good training.

The most telling thing is that despite the best youth training methods from Western Europe being more or less available to anyone who wants them, very few have actually gone through and implemented what Netherlands, Germany or Spain have done. The ideas for how the best soccer players are produced are widely known, but the actual implementation takes an extremely long time if you're willing to upend your entire nation's philosophy.

If you manage to change the old guard's way of thinking, you then need to roll out a national program, and wait a good 10 years at least to see the fruits of your labor, provided you have the playing base, resources and quality coaches necessary to do this. Not many nations do, but the US is one that does. We have slowly seen new approaches to youth coaching rolled out for some time, and we should start to see significant improvements in the quality of the average players in the medium term.

You can stop English coaches from stealing your ideas by the cunning ploy of not being in England.

Spain's poor showing this WC aside, it's still all about possession football. If you can keep possession you can more chances at goal. And for possession football you need superior technique. The American spirit and work ethic will only get us so far. We need to combine it with players with superb technical ability.

To the jerk off who started this thread. We in the US should steal what other countries do best and discard what they don't do well. That should be our style.

On Mexico they play a better game then the US. But by the way they are Illegally moving here in four years we will be much better then Mexico. Because four years from now there will be no Mexicans in Mexico they will all be here.

Technical ability is of course incredibly important, but the actual differences in technique become marginal at the top level. What the best teams seem to do better than those beneath them is, as you say, control possession. But that control of possession is based around their ability to find and create space, which leads us back to both youth and senior coaching.

Even the all out possession game from a few years ago has (which was only really successfully implemented by Barcelona and Spain) morphed to a more direct version of it. Bayern and Real have won the last two Champions League using a style that is in direct contrast to dominating possession. Its based around finding and exploiting space and quick movement in transition.
