http://www.sjearthquakes.com/news/2013/12/san-jose-reschedules-games-vs-col-rsl I guess the Quakes just couldn't stand not having the home opener vs. RSL. Home game vs. COL moved from March 9 to May 7. Home game vs. RSL moved from May 7 to March 15.
The CCL quarterfinals will be played during March 11-13 at home and during March 18-20 at Toluca, so there will be a CCL home game before the MLS opener. Ostensibly this schedule change is being done because of CCL, but it doesn't make much sense to me. Previously there was a weekend off between the two midweek CCL games. Now the Quakes can be well-rested for the first leg, but will have to play an MLS game on short rest in between the two legs.
And a league match on the following weekend as well. New schedule: Quakes play a mid-week home match in CCL (Mar 11-13), weekend league home opener (Mar 15), mid-week away match in CCL (Mar 18-20), then weekend league away match (Mar 22). That's 4 matches over a period of between 9-11 days with half of it on the road whereas previously it was the same number of matches but over a period of 14 days, so they're actually increasing schedule congestion with this move, as reported. Seems like idiocy.
