Ummm...yeah, I know. Wheeling is an exurb of Pittsburgh. Its a Rust Belt town. Like most of Western PA. Interestingly, the Aforementioned Wheeling is North of that line.
I know this is about Wawa vs Sheetz. But neither have anything on the wonderful hot dog joints of West Virginia. The majority of the trips are up and down 79. Two years ago we made it all the way down to Charleston for some dogs. It's something I suggest to anyone who enjoys regional eats. Haught's off the Sabraton exit of 68 makes a fine slaw dog for being so far north. And I know it's not a true WVHD for it's lack of slaw, but Yann's in Fairmont is serious business. I could probably eat ten if it wasn't always my first stop of five or six.
buddy of mine coordinated a "hot dog road trip" a while back. all came about at a wedding where the girls were talking about "girls day" and "spa day". he said screw it, lets have hot dog day. started in philly, ended up at Nathan's. hit a dozen places in PA, NJ, NY along the way.
That's a great day! I mapped out a BBQ day. Plan is to drive up into South Georgia with a couple of guys and hit about 7 places. I can't wait until the meat sweats start.
My review of a Kissimmee sub shop which serves cheese steaks: http://sweetteaandbourbon.com/2014/08/12/rays-steaks-subs/ I wish they had packed more meat into the sandwich, other than that it was good.
I have no idea why people love WAWA so much, frozen rolls, fake formed liquid meat and chemically treated condiments. There are so many great places to get a hoagie in this area, no need to eat WAWA.
Personally, I hate WaWa. Their parking lots are treacherous, their food not so great, I do not drink coffee, and their prices a bit high. If I want a good sandwich (hoagie, cheesesteak, etc.) I go to a local shop!
Say what y'all may, I would take a DeNic's anything over a Wawa or Sheetz hoagie. Apples to oranges, perhaps. But still.
Almost 2 years after learning Wawa existed I finally ate my first "hoagie." On top of that, I blogged about it (because who doesn't want to read about gas station cuisine). http://sweetteaandbourbon.com/2016/02/19/wawa/
Minnesotans tell me hoagies are hot subs. I tell them to ******** off. (Or I would if they weren't so damn nice.)
Sorry boys, late to the thread but I grew up in Alabama and lived right next to the "o" in Nowhere, Georgia for a few years. To paraphrase Bill Clinton's campaign adviser, James Carville, Pennsylvania is just Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and a whole lot of Alabama in between. I also lived in New Orleans for four years so it's a Po' Boy, not a hoagie or sub or grinder or torpedo or hero or zeppelin or an italian. As for Wawa v Sheetz I generally tried to avoid eating at any place that can be summed up by the motto, "Eat Here and Get Gas"
