The reality *probably* is that 'Coutinho out, VvD in' made the whole team better and started the train rolling. Firmino (with the exception of the CL campaign) and Mane were also both better in the 2nd half, at least more productive. Looking at transfermarkt.
I'm not sure on that one to be honest (I know you prefer if I disagree then I say so, and of course like that I give a detailed answer when you quote me, at least when I have an opinion). I would perceive that VvD has of course a positive impact, but I'd also perceive Coutinho out has a negative one (maybe we just don't know in what ways Liverpool would do even better with him in the 2nd half of the season, but I think having the creativity there would likely yield some good benefit as he was in very good form). In the league they didn't challenge very closely of course, and in the European Cup Final a Coutinho having a good game could have been useful. Whether there is some reason why the team would function better without him (or at least some players would step up their performances) I don't know, but I can't just dismiss the notion I guess.
In essence, from what I saw (but on TV not having a season ticket at Liverpool of course) and the way I remember it, I'd say Coutinho was theoretically both impacting performances well when he played (with his own quality, but team play too) and having a positive impact for Salah. It just seemed genuinely like Salah started playing better in the second half of the season - showing a bit more in terms of skills, but also being more efficient with chances (I think he took some and missed some of what Coutinho gave him in the first half of the season). Coutinho's ratings on DBS Calcio were excellent, but he wasn't even fully present appearance wise in the first half of the season before going to Barcelona was he....(due to injury)? That explains where I'm coming from I guess Puck anyway.... That I'm not seeing it so much as a case of 'cause and effect' in terms of Coutinho's absence, but yeah VvD playing surely has a positive effect in terms of defensive solidity but also confidence through the team. Whether VvD had a bigger positive effect than Coutinho (when one played and the other didn't)? Could be I guess, although hard to gauge perhaps. I'd just be surprised if they were better off without Coutinho (and even this season, maybe he turns some draws into wins and has them ahead of Man City? - that's just theoretical of course though).
I see what you mean but I meant that it was a good swap if a choice had to be made. Coutinho also hard to fit into a team structure, maybe, as now also see at FCB.
Yeah, I can think that the first point could be right (even seems like it is right, as they could certainly manage to score a lot of goals without Coutinho still, and even this season they don't do too bad on that score of course). You know my preference is not to omit/sacrifice the playmakers I guess anyway (maybe part of that is stylistic but I also feel they provide quality that should actually help cohesion with the ball, but also are able to unlock things at any moment - of course every player is different and we can't directly say Coutinho is just like Bergkamp or whatever...). All players trying to play good football, without an extreme talent or outright number 10 type, and within a fairly structured line-up, I can like at times too though to be fair haha: Or could it be argued that Forest team actually had two playmakers and the Liverpool team without Coutinho not one true one? Not sure lol, and anyway I'm not asking you to watch the video but just using it as an example (the 4-4-2 used was in essence a structured system with and without the ball, even if there was decent movement and some freedom I suppose). It's impossible to go back into 1988 and offer the chance to add a Coutinho (perhaps requiring a new system to get the best out of him, unless sticking him as a midfield winger) anyway. For Liverpool, I felt he was useful either as one of the 3 midfielders or as number 10 or wide in the attack.
He had a couple of physical problems. He lost the first 4 matches of the season because apparently dragged a physical wear and then lost another 2 matches due to a groin injury. He ended up playing 15 matches in the FA Premier League and I think he had only one appearance in the League Cup, apart from 5 in the UEFA Champions League.
I should remember better because it's not long ago, but there was also some unsettled feeling due to him probably wanting to join Barcelona (at the time Liverpool not wanting to sell) I think wasn't there. It seemed the fans were happy enough with him in general when he had found excellent form though, but then he indeed went to Barcelona.

The proposed team is made only by points and since there are only those when they're in a top 23, the consistency on an average level is a bit left out (what could happen in that comparison: Busquets played in a high level for the longest time in the decade, but Kanté maybe has reached a higher peak in a shorter time). I hope I can better adjust the scores including the honorable mentions and better defined degrees including more details in these next weeks.
This most definitely didn't happen either though Busquets is superior to every DM in both consistency and peak in this decade.
Strangely, this might be one of the rare occasions where Brazil gets underrated by Peru FC (except marketing machine Neymar, who is given two free passes for his Santos years, which is dubious from a number of angles). They haven't been too integral to the absolute top teams, perhaps (also true for Serie A and EPL during their heydays), but are still one of the few countries to have a starter in the CL final in almost every year. And they are also still #1 in Elo for this decade (maybe sometimes helped by the ref, the draw, a few times, in 2014, but still). Some players like Iniesta, Ozil and Tevez very overrated here.

Salah over KDB is a mistake, once one includes the World Cup in the equation (KDB also good/great in the CL). That said, I also see other candidates for the podium. Same for Xavi over Sneijder for 2010 in my perception at least. Busquets is maybe for a part handicapped by that so many different Spanish players are seen as a candidate. I also dislike it very much how Van Persie ends up below Tevez, Rooney and many other folks despite him very arguably being the most productive EPL player of the 2005 - 2015 era (on a per 90 min base this is clearly true, also somewhat true for through-balls category) while also doing relatively well at an international level. As I demonstrated and proved in this thread, the included Tevez in 2011 was inferior at every level and from almost every angle.

It doesn't help that when his team does really well (eg. Barcelona 14-15) he didn't have one of his better seasons (a hangover from the World Cup, perhaps?) So when the world was giving his team the full attention, they didn't get to see a GOAT-level DM. On the other hand, when he had an amazing season (2015-16) his team didn't do so well so his greatness goes a bit unnoticed. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind whatsoever that Busquets reign supreme in terms of both consistency and peak in this decade. I would rank Busquets the no.1 DM in most years, and in some year, easily a top 10 player in the world.
