As always some users here can't control their hate against Brazilian players and they surely thinks they aren't parcial. :whistling:

Kaka also gained two 1.0 ratings (the max) from Kicker vs Manchester United while Cristiano Ronaldo gained one 2 and other 4, it was a average performance considering both games vs a excellent performance.
Kaka was also elect the Serie A Football of the Year by the Italian Footballers' Association that season: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serie_A_Footballer_of_the_Year

You shouldn't worry, the Latin cabal/market, the Brazil fake news brigade and anglogermanic alliance is too strong on the internet and modern football media.

With as result that various Brazilian figures have been upgraded (further) above the perception of the time itself.

Yeah because 1 performance is more than enough to win a ballon D’Or

Kaka was Milan’s second furthest outfield player after Andriy Shevchenko and scored a paltry 8 league goals (and did not make up for it with hardly any assists)
I don’t hate Brazilians and ironically even you admitted CR was the best player of the 2006/07 club season (and 1 game will not change that)
Ronaldinho was a deserving winner in 2005(clear cut) he’s a Brazilian and I don’t have any problem admitting that

Zidane won the 98 ballon dor as a fraud it should’ve been R9(clearly)
He should’ve also won it over sammer in 96 but lost by a point
Last time I checked he was a Brazilian and I rate him very highly (top 15 all time as he was rated at his pinnacle by various sources)

zico is one of the most outstanding players in history on talent/skill set alone he is IMO top 5(in terms of completeness he is only rivalled by Cruyff,Messi and Pele)
    He is a Brazilian
I’m not against them I’m against players being overrated on the basis of racial preferences and biases

You are yourself a disgusting racist who has a clear and inexplicable disdain for Portuguese players
You have expressed this numerous times and the evidence is out there for all to see
Please don’t attempt to bring me down to your lowly level

Disagree with this reasoning. What was the opposition there? Against the only proper opponent (or two opponents) he, as usual, vanished into nothing.

Enormously overhyped player, with a toxic attitude towards his team mates. Lot of things have been said about Ademir da Guia but Riquelme takes the cake. Liability at a top team (Barcelona) and then Villarreal had their best finish in the first season without him.

Barcelona became the first ever Spanish team to win a treble when Pep chucked out Ronaldinho
Did this mean he was a liability or overrated
Riquelme wasnt physically and mentally strong enough to be a real football legend
Technically though he was at the level of Zidane/Ronaldinho and one of the last classic 10s of that calibre
the vision on that guy was really at times maradona esque

I agree the level of the CA in 2007 was a joke but than there is the small issue of the Copa Libertadores what do we do with that?
He was clutch AF in the knockout stages at every crucial round he was decisive and was awarded MVP
he did what for boca what even maradona himself couldn’t do

Well I think there is a difference in how Ronaldinho played for a bigger team anyway and no one ever claimed he dragged them single-handedly.

Ronaldinho in his very last season (2007-08) was arguably a liability but 2005-06 for instance was not too far off from a treble. It is different from Villarreal that in the first post-Riquelme season achieved 12 points more than in any of the seasons with him. Not the case for Ronaldinho.

Why cherry pick Villarreals league standing
    What about the CL?
He led them to a SF which is a huge achievement for a club of that stature

Did anyone claim Villarreal was a 1 man team?
I never heard that before he was the extra quality sure, the star player but they also had a great CF in Diego Forlán
They had a similar relationship as Batistutua and Rui Costa at Fiorentina

Dude was from the barrio so he looked a bit cold, detached perhaps even weird but I don’t agree with your criticism here
Riquelme was no all timer or player of the year contender but he was a quality player,a classic 10 that could’ve played and shone in most eras

Following the scale used for the best votes of the year (1st: 4 points, 2nd: 3 points, 3rd: 2 points, remaining until 23rd: 1 point, honorable mentions: 0.4 points), here is the classification for the best of the 1990s. We know that Tom Stevens published his Top 23 and honorable mentions until 1994, beginning to do so the following year, Peru FC, which also proposed the Top 3 from 1990 to 1994, because Tom did not do it.

A usual internet list and proves Ariaga his previous case and points.

Zico above Platini, LOL. Platini beats him at all levels, by all the possible metrics. Was also rated higher in his own time, even by a number of South American magazines.

Maradona his career effectively ended at 29, yet ends up higher than the other super greats. Just receives many free passes for years he didn't do much or was close to winning things (1979, 1982).

Baggio and Laudrup are as usual higher than where they are in 'non-internet' lists. I rate Laudrup quite high as well (one of the best five of his generation) but his career really took off when he was 26.

.... and I can go on for a while if I want to (though I have to say that - with the exception of MvB - the usual internet knocking down of NED players doesn't happen here; same for the Scottish and Portuguese top players).

Have to say I'm surprised Bergkamp is as high as top 50 without the 2000s.

He has three/four podium finishes if I'm not mistaken (split between TS until 1995 and PeruFC). Plus a steady amount of honorable mentions (only not in 1995 I think). Was for ex. close for inclusion in 1999.

A couple of podium finishes (1992, 1993, 1997, 1998) help because you get the double amount of points.

Also surprised by Laudrup tbh. Given his difficult Italian spell.

World Soccer's Roger MacDonald has suggestions for the 1966 votes:
"Bobby Charlton, to be brutally frank, must consider himself very lucky to be European Footballer of the year". Many journalists "felt bound to favor a member of the winning team". He is still incosistent, and gave indifferent displays in four of the WC matches.
Jose Torres was "a tour de force for Portugal, possibly, but never in world class". This is the type of case I've been trying to make for the Ballon nominations, with greater emphasis on all-around class over specific performances from the lesser names.
RMD would give the Ballon to Beckenbauer, who "made a larger contribution to both club and country over the whole year". He also advocates George Best: "It was he, and not Charlton, who made possible Manchester United's destruction of Benfica in Lisbon".

As for me, I don't have a lot of suggestions for 1966. Can definitely see why most of the names are there. I would probably drop Perfumo, who didn't get a mention IIRC, and Tostao, who so far was only coming off as promising rather than already a great. Would instead include Held, already coming off as a candidate even before the WC, and Banks. Spencer and Joya are finally getting some recognizition after the Real Madrid defeat.

To return to 65, Asparuhov started getting some lip-service in 65-66 at last, so maybe he can stay in, after all. The SA-qualifiers weren't seen as particularly good indicator of world class, so I'd probably drop Leonel Sanchez. Jairzinho was hailed as the second greatest Brazilian player behind Pele, so that strengthens his case.

I decided to go for a whole project on the CR7 Messi era (2007-2018), which will be posted next below.
Some good feedback got me "annoyed" with certain inconsistencies. So I developed a schematic filter that lead to a massive revision of my earlier posts.
    From most to least valued:
    1 CL
    2 WC
    3 Euro
    4 EL + Copa América
5 Top league(s) of the season (roughly Eng, Ger, Spain, chronologically)
6 Everything else, with slight preference to cups.

    Some examples:
-The Libertadores goalkeeper heroics of Cevallos, Victor etc. are hardly valued.
-Inzaghi scoring in the final stages of the CL is highly valued.
-Cristiano moving from England to Spain kept his league value high.
-Agüero moving from Spain to England kept his league value low.
-Ramos scoring in the final stages of the CL 2014 is highly valued but his weak performance at WC14 puts him behind Hummels and Godín.
-Czech's 2012 CL is highly valued but his weak Euro puts him behind Casillas.

    Other peculiarities:
    -Every season has an XI
-Every season has a title. Ignore these if you find them confusing.
-The DBS stats for the Premiership 08 are off. I would like to fully blame DBS for the odd collection of right backs.

    Top resources:
-YouTube (still hating the sexist razzias on quality videos)
    -Transfermarkt
    -DBS

While I like the ranking, as it rewards consistency above all else (better to be nominated/podium for multiple years than win one year and not nominated again) the final results look very skewed. Henry, for example, is over-rewarded at 12, higher than even Franz Beckenbauer.

The first list I ever saw that ranked Henry over Eusebio and Ronaldinho in the top 20 players
Rivaldo in 73rd ...... beneath Kaka :ROFLMAO:

the consistency argument(if that is the argument) is at least “stronger”for Henry.
Kaka however did not have either longevity or peak over Rivaldo at club or international level
Just no way is that possible

Also did Xavi without 2010-2012 really surpass scholes (almost his whole career by 2009)
    I’m not convinced at all

There is tostao aswell who was surely WAY better than kaka(even as good as Pelé in the late 60s)
But tostao is 142nd all time behind beckham/RVN

Van Basten had consistency from 21 years old as Dutch player of the year
7th place ballon dor at 22 years old and from 24-28 he was 3x European player of the year

At best shot Henry was “European player of the year” in 2004 and 2006
    Top 5 in 2003
    but that’s it

With no CL as Van Basten 1988/89
No international performance as Euro 88
(Pre 2003 so before 26 years old Henry was really nobody he would be forgotten if he retired like MVB who’s legacy was sealed before the 1990 WC as a all time striker)

Lesser elite consistency+lower peak should amount to a significantly lower ranking

Just too many flaws to address but these were some of the more glaring ones

A quite good article c.q. analysis has appeared today (use translate):

Sadly, there is an internet tendency to knock down certain historic players (in their own time) and create false equivalence for others (examples of false equivalence: Zico - Platini; Beckenbauer - Cruijff).

This is arguably right, for league level, but I'd say Kaka is clearly the better Champions League player. It is not close.

Xavi without 2008 - 2012 is maybe not better than Scholes indeed (Scholes 2002-03 and Xavi 2004-05 cross each other out from the equation), bu Scholes himself is overrated in the way he ends up above a superstar like Veron or an instrumental midfielder as Seedorf.

I don’t think zico/platini (in the way you refer )is a false equivalence.
if anything the opposite is true

Platini arguably edged out zico In mentality/big games and for 1 standout international performance (that zico did not have)

In finishing, short passing, dribbling,FKs etc zico edged out platini by a HUGE distance
Only in long pass was platini conclusively better

Yeah I can agree Cruyff/Beckenbauer is a totally false equivalence(I’ve already said this and you’ve tagged it)

Anyways there was much worse in that list
Laudrup/Henry/Ronaldinho above Eusebio/Van Basten/Charlton is a completely false equivalence with no bearing on reality

    PS
You clearly exaggerate here about Kaka and his edge over Rivaldo in the champions league
Rivaldo his KO performance wasn’t as strong admittedly but that’s it(and Kaka faced many suspect sides in his “great CL career”
5th place EPL side Liverpool 04/05
    a “strong” Celtic in 06/07
a dysfunctional united defence in 06/07
    Etc

Rivaldo at international level completely blows away kaka and every Brazilian not named R9 in the last 25 years
Combined with his great league career should amount to a much higher historical ranking

Rivaldo was also demonstrably more technical than kaka to the point where no legitimate comparison can be made

I know I normally don't like to get into arguments/debates lol (less than you'd like me too perhaps even sometimes!) but I would respectfully err a different way re: some of the things you've said here (or at least I think you exaggerate them beyond a fair balanced view of reality....in my own estimation of course and I don't want to seem like I must be definitively correct).

    - I feel like saying Zico was way better in those aspects than Platini is not correct anyway. Dribbling would be the closest, but Zico was not a really prolific dribbler - he could just pull off some really good slick runs at times (particularly when young maybe, but not only then) with good rhythm when he had momentum. Platini too though was not too shabby with occasional dribbles past some players, down the right side, through midfield or whatever - he actually felt himself he was good at it it seems as I heard him say once "I could really dribble" which did kind of surprise me given it's not the first attribute many people would associate with him I think. In terms of style of play I feel neither were like Hazard for example, or George Best in terms of the regularity they used dribbling - both Platini and Zico would for the majority of time be controlling the ball and passing it, and then moving into space etc. But yes Zico could be great with dribbling sometimes. Zico could be pretty good indeed with relatively long passes too I think it'd be fair to say, but yeah Platini with a conclusive edge (and especially over extra long distance if we put it that way) seems fair.

Re: Rivaldo/Kaka - I feel like both of them (with different styles/attributes) were fairly variable (even in prime periods maybe) in terms of how skilfully and coherently they seemed to play. Both could be a bit sloppy and seem much less of a skilled player on some days than others. See Rivaldo vs Denmark in 1998 WC and then vs France in the Final for example - he seems to have dropped off a lot, almost like he's a different player I'd say. Kaka on his day could be skilful too - in that Liverpool game for example - I know you said yourself that was a great display. I think Rivaldo could show more miraculous and creative bits of skill and improvisation at times, but at other times perhaps he could even seem the more 'clumsy' of the two players? I think his big advantage over Kaka (and most other players?- except the likes of Hagi etc!) would be with long shots (and like re: Platini/Zico passing, I think moreso with 'very long' shots as Kaka could score with drives from outside the box of course). I feel you over-rate Rivaldo at Intl level a bit myself, but yeah placing him over Kaka to some degree at least in that respect seems fair. I feel Rivaldo at Wc02 maybe gets a bit over-rated at times but he did end up with several goals so it's understandable he's lauded for it to a degree - I don't feel he was carrying the rest of the team more than other players (obviously including the other two Rs) and maybe sometimes the narrative seems to lean that way, perhaps because people feel he can actually be under-appreciated due to Ronaldo's comeback tournament getting the headlines.

I think anyway that that 'ranking' can not be taken as a top players of all-time list - it is just a numerical summary of which players got included in these 23 player lists (factoring in first places, and podium places I think) according to the decisions of Tom and Peru. Of course some people do place a lot of emphasis on how good players were in their own era, and also on consistency when thinking of all-time rankings etc - but not only those things and not to the extent that they'd compile a list by doing an exercise like this and (which is estimated anyway) and ignoring their other instincts and preferences in general. So really only opinions about specific years can be given, rather than comments about which number someone places at in that list. For example an opinion about Van Basten getting more recognition in the mid 80s would be valid, or Henry being taken out for a year somewhere he's been included (I'd need to check lol but perhaps 00/01 or 08/09....).

I also feel like there would be a decent argument that Platini 'ran games' more than Zico, but I'm especially not claiming to be definitive about that one. I just feel it seems in certain games he'd be more involved and influential (which makes sense in some ways, playing more in the midfield as a rule even if both might be labelled number 10s and on occasions then both perhaps would play comparable roles/positions). Maybe it's easy to focus too much on the attributes (and I guess I can be easily guilty of it myself) and not enough on the overview re: players impact in games. Even though Zico could obviously play great throughout certain games (and also be a prompter as well as final 3rd player - eg vs Brazil in 1982 or Liverpool in 1981), I feel it could be fair to say he was a bit more peripheral, while Platini (without being like Xavi in style) might be more the fulcrum of his sides play. I guess nowadays some stats could be looked up to back up or cast doubt on this, but historically we could only do it for World Cups I suppose.

I'm certainly not saying Zico didn't have some advantages too though, even outside of dribbling - his agility (in various ways) and elusiveness being better in the final 3rd I think and yeah maybe with certain opportunities to shoot he'd be better, including with acrobatic finishes (I just didn't find it right to say in general he was much better at finishing than Platini, or even at free-kicks...because Platini was really a master with those too - I know Vegan even took the view that Platini scored more often against better goalkeepers, but still for me Zico does seem a prime candidate as best free-kick taker at least from relatively short range).

I use to feel the same until I watched this in it’s entirety

The argument that platini scored his in stronger leagues holds no water
Zico past his prime went to the “ultra defensive” Serie A and scored at a superior rate than maradona or platini ever did in Italy
Zico has almost twice as many goals in his career as platini
Twice as many freekicks( if not more)
Has longevity on him and I might add by a considerable distance
Platini retired at 31 and his last season for juventus was horrible by most accounts

Euro 84 (and his goal ratio)was more of an exception rather than the rule
I agree for this and some big game performances vs solid NTs and club teams platini surpassed zico in the “greatness” stakes(which isn’t entirely dependent on talent but moreso towards era defining accomplishments)

if we are talking about zico in a given game at his best he was not in fact much worse than maradona(if at all)
Platini was really far IMO behind these two in skillset
A bit like Xavi compared to Messi/CR
