 I like the idea. And that's a nice image.
I find that you picked the right choice of formations to use for these years too. Well done.

Said it earlier but I am not sure about Neymar for three.

Yes he was CL topscorer but if you look closer you see many goals came with the tie/game settled (very few teams ever came back from a 2 goals deficit in the 2nd leg). His overall game was also not at his best, as shown by his assists and such (0 assists in CL). Suarez was close to non-existent in the first five months of the season, but after that he was significantly more important imho, with more important moments and a more diverse game too.

    Thank you for your thoughts!
I also liked Suárez a bit more for the CL.
My reasoning for Neymar is the NT. His team, just like at WC14, was successful when he played. But they went down without him, losing to Paraguay at the Copa. So it's the clutch absentee excuse. And of course, Suárez did not partake.

Excuse me if you explained it before, I have not located an explanation.

How come you get these scores mate?, how is the formula?

    63-64:

Weird season. I can think of a bunch of players who could be dropped, but there aren't that many choices to replace them. Batty's all-around negativity is influencing me. :D

Notes from the Mundialito in Brazil:
-Roger Hunt, despite the goal, was considered a disappointment, so I would consider either Johnny Byrne or Peter Thompson (and Charlton, ofc) ahead of him if you want an English player. England's best players all-around were considered to be Moore, Greaves, Charlton and Byrne, but I think Greaves and Moore would be enough.
-Gerson was "terrible" against Argentina, and Jairzinho wasn't a starter. I would drop the latter, at least.

-Bologna players. Bulgarelli and Nielsen have barely been mentioned, so I'd tone down their representation to key player Haller. Surprised at how below radar Nielsen has been in general.
-Jair has been seen more as a support player only for Inter.

+Undefeated Sweden were team of the year in 1963. That streak end in 1964, but they were still highly rated. Can you imagine there being a time when it was unclear whether Swede or Germany would qualify for a WC? Their achievements disappear a bit awkwardly in a seasonal ranking, but I think "Germano-class" Åke Johansson could earn a spot as their representative.
+Artime for 63. Good call in not picking any of the Independiente players, BTW. They were seen as a team without stars. Zaragoza-players also don't have that Ballon-aura despite all their achievements this season.
+Players like Baxter, Eusebio, Jurion and Van Himst still retain a very high rating, though not sure how much of that is from past achievements.
+Yashin here instead of 63, though not sure exactly how the seasons are divided here.

Saying Suarez's contribution in the Nations Cup was limited sounds harsh. Report:
"Voronin [...] and the renowned Suarez were outstanding. Suarez was closely marked in both matches [...] but he still managed to make a goal each time."
Since he won both EC and ENC, I think Suarez edges this one over Pele, who doesn't have any particularly notable achievements. Pele can spare one.

How can Fabregas be behind Lampard in 2010 when he was picked ahead of Lampard for PFA TotY, and made the World Cup winning assist?

Lampard wasn't even nominated for PFA PotY

Fabregas of 09-10 was easily one of the best season by a central midfielder in EPL's history. He was that good.

As usual underachievers Zico and Falcao get wildly overrated and as usual an enormous amount of double handicap revisionism. That's what you get when so many have a vested interest in the football cartel while others become faceless entities.

Interestingly, Lampard and Fabregas together created only five big chances all season. I agree Fabregas edges it, compensated for many injuries in his team (until he himself got injured) and Lampard has a high number of penalties.

This list is very strange, as can be expected from an attempt where Romario during his Eredivisie years (never more than 20 non-penalty goals) gets included more often than Gullit, MvB and the rest of the folks (the other foreigners like Litmanen).

Double Ballon d'Or winner, decider of three major finals (for three different teams), youngest ever Golden Boot winner MvB is only 58th.

How in 'reality' he compared to his contemporaries (late 1990):

    1964-1965

-Asparukhov doesn't have a high profile at all so far, so I would drop him.
-Uruguayan football was seen as quite weak at this point, so I would drop the Penarol guys, really, or at least reduce them to one. Haven't reached the end of the SA 65 season, but so far Joya and Rocha haven't been presented as anything above ordinary. Not Ballon-class, and certainly nowhere near winning one. For what it's worth, Batty referred to Rocha as a shadow of his predecessors.
-In a shocking twist, I won't contest the inclusion of ADG this time. Brazil's European tour was a lot more successful this time, so the poll should reflect that. ADG was described as brilliant, though so were guys like Flavio and Rinaldo. With the benefit of hindsight we could include Jairzinho?

+Ferenc Bene should be there, after taking the Olympics by storm. It's only the Olympics, but he was already viewed as one of the world's top marksmen.
+Coen Moulijn was described as the best left-winger in Europe, so he could be in.
+I must have missed a post, but get it now. For some reason Jurion and Van Himst are ineligible for this poll. :D

    From last season:
+In 1964 Boca had a streak of only one goal conceded in 14 matches, so Antonio Roma could be in?
+Of the Spanish euro-64 team, Amancio and Pereda are described as the most effective. Pereda scored in the final and set up the winner. Lapetra is "erratic if brilliant", while Marcelino "has all the trappings of a great centre-forward". Between them I would pick the latter.

Slight tangent here. I think this has been touched on before, but here's another fun example of what old match reports were like. The decisive moment of Euro 1964 is described as follows:
"Mudrk harried him [Pereda] down to the corner-flag, and with a centre apparently impossible, Pereda twisted on one leg and kicked the ball across as he fell. Yachin was caught on his line, and Marcelino catapulted himself forward to head home."

    Here's the footage:

This is my favorite, though. I kept the quote saved. Ray Clemence describes Gerd Muller's goal against Liverpool:
"He outjumped Larry Lloyd, nearly twice his size and good in the air, to head a cross against the angle of the bar and upright."
"I dived, but couldn't get to the ball as it bounced down and out with Muller on the ground. He'd jumped so high that he'd fallen over by the penalty spot."
"Yet he was up before me and reached the ball while it was still bouncing. Then he stuck it in he net! He was lightning in the box."

Yes, that's exactly how it happened, Ray!

Something to keep in mind when reading all the old match reports with those net-ripping thunderbolts.

    Thank you for the feedback.
I will move Fabregas up, also because of how his team performed in his absence.
However, I feel that trophies do count in this type of ranking. I could put Messi in top spot for seasons straight, based on his technical and physical package. But it takes away the nuances of the seasons. And we also have our alltime top X lists.
@AD78 did do a good job of making an annual ranking of the most gifted players.

As I'm doing this project, my criteria are getting clearer and more consistent. So the first releases may be up for revision.
Questions I put on the players are:
-How decisive was the player in the highest knock out competitions?
-Did the player transcend in his league and local cups?
-How should his league be ranked for the specific year/how well is his league represented in the latter stages of the continental cups?
-Are there any detractors?; red cards, penalty misses, crucial slip ups etc.

I have a lot to say re 2007 and the best performers during that calendar year
Suffice to say if this is a calendar analysis Ronaldinho has no place in this ranking
His best form was in the first half of the season(aided by a gazillion penalties and set pieces)

Also his ESM rankings were all in 2006(no mentions for 2007 which would substantiate this further)

In the second half of 06/07 Messi demonstrated a level comparable to the best ever level of Ronaldinho gaucho with some really outstanding performances (his best pre Guardiola era)

The win for Kaka was based solely on his champions league performances
10 goals for a SS is impressive but then there is the level of opposition he faced
6 of his 10 goals came against
    Celtic
    Anderlecht
    AEK Athens

There are the goals in the SF against a makeshift Manchester United defence
But really this imo isn’t worthy of a Ballon D’Or
For the 2006/07 club season at least for me there isn’t a shred of doubt CR was the clear cut best player(one of his best ever seasons in his career despite the multitude of 50+ goal seasons in Madrid)
I would put Francisco totti or Messi either 2nd or third(for 2006/07)

Kaka refusing to play in the Copa America and not being Serie As clear cut best performer should detract a lot from any claims he may of had(check his dbs calcio ratings and ESM rankings compared to the other candidates I’ve listed)
Riquelme should Also make top 5 for his outstanding performance in the Copa America

Thank you for your thoughts on this!
It is only a calendar year for SA players. So, effectively, it is the 06/07 season with an extra half year for Riquelme.

Kaká rates as the best Milan player at DBS. He is also their most consistent attacker. But I agree with you that he wasn't the highest rated player in Serie A, which I rate as third European league for the year, or 5th after the UEFA leagues. The Copa is a detractor indeed. I discounted Suárez 2015 for this as well.

Kaká's performance against a strong Celtic was crucial. And so I see his final and semi final of the Champions league.
Messi, nor CR were as crucial in their CL campaign. Deco was very strong but he didn't transcend in la Liga. RvN, Ronaldinho and Villa had a great Liga season.
If we compare positions, CR did better than Messi and Drogba outdoes Totti.
Again, I rate with the following questions in mind:
-How decisive was the player in the highest knock out competitions?
-Did the player transcend in his league and local cups?
-How should his league be ranked for the specific year/how well is his league represented in the latter stages of the continental cups?
-Are there any detractors?; red cards, penalty misses, crucial slip ups etc.

So for example, in 2007, Neuer was technically the best GK but he only played in the 8th competition, counting the UEFA's
and Copa. Andrés Palop, a technically inferior GK, was absolutely critical for his team's UEFA success. So Palop gets into the XI.
