4/2/2017 - 2006 Girl... Impact from opponents shin gaurd and ground - no black out - one pupil was larger then the other. Assessment on field during game was to transport player 1 hour away to a more qualified hospital. CT scan showed no indications of a concussion. No MRI has been done yet. Today (4/12/2017) the player does not recognize friends - drove past the fields which are easily recognized (9 turf fields off a major highway) and she says - "Oh they play soccer there". The Dr. suggested 2 hours of school with no work/reading. She recognized no one - but remembered the combination on her locker. The Dr. has stated that this is normal... Your thoughts? Thanks
I have a lot of thoughts on I put them down on two posts. My oldest daughter was still living home then. I was a snow fall and a lot of ice on the ground. I get a cell call from my daughter. I can't understand a word she is saying. Then call goes off. I know the way she gets home from work. So I decide I will systematically go over the way she gets home. I am three blocks from our house I see an ambulance and they found her unconscious and someone called the ambulance. I call the wife and my oldest son and tell them what I know and what hospital we are going to. I don't trust people so the first thing we check for was she mugged and robbed. She has her money and other things. Then I think maybe she had a fight with her boy friend and maybe he did it. So I call him tell him how we found her and to get to the hospital right away. He said ok and comes. If he gave me any kind of a story then I know he did it. Then he would have an accident some where along the line. Any way they admit her and we all stay with her. When she came around she had an immediate personality change. She was a different person she wanted out. Try to reason with her forget that. She never used foul language. Now every other word was the f word. It was like she went completely nuts. When she finally calms down. It's 3 am and we figure we can go home and comeback in the morning. At 5 am I woke up I had a felling something is wrong so I drive back. At about 5:20 I get out of my car and see her coming out of the hospital on her own. I bring her back and stay with her the rest of the night. She was not herself for months after that. I would take her to a neurologist for all that time. This was over 20 yrs ago. She is fine has a good job. But when she gets mad look out. She has never been the easy going person she once was.
How scary. I'm not a doctor, but I've been to a couple of different speakers on youth/sports concussion risks. I'm assuming that she was too young for baseline testing in the fall? If I am remembering the speaker I listened to last year, baseline concussion testing is not valid until about 6th grade for kids. I can't tell from your post. Has she not recognized friends this entire time, or did it just start today? It sounds like post concussive syndrome. I think the only thing you can do is wait for her brain to heal. Lots of rest and not a lot of stress on her brain. Limiting school sounds like a good idea.
My son suffered a concussion last year…read lot on the subject, dealt with several doctors and experts over the course of treatment…imo there is no real consensus or understanding on the subject of concussions and most frontline general practitioners are just as confused and clueless as everyone else…well-meaning professionals, don’t get me wrong; just trying to muddle through this subject like everyone else… For example, my understanding is a CT or MRI won’t show a concussion…either they were wasting time/money or thought something more serious… But if after 10 days, persistent, non-improving, or worsening post-concussion symptoms (can’t remember friends), that shouldn’t be considered normal or at least non-concerning imho…
I saw this on the Channel 9 news the other morning. Perhaps it could be of some help. Concussion Treatment
Tell you something else right after some go into a hospital. They look at your face sometimes you can have black eyes and your face is swollen. So right away initially they think you got hit in the face. But it might not be true. You can get those symptoms when your hit from behind like if you got hit in the back of the head. Bring in specialist in head trauma doctors know by feeling your face, cheek bones and eye sockets and don't feel any damage to them.
