My buddy Pedro is the president of the Rovers apparently, he's been posting pics of the Kyrgyzstan trip...we met as rugby teammates, even toured together. I never knew he played soccer haha.

Interesting appointment. US national team players like DeAndre Yedlin and Jordan Morris were played and developed by him.

For the first time in their history, a Guamanian team will participate in AFC Cup. FC Rovers, the current Guamanian League champions will enter the group stages of 2017 AFC Cup and will face April 25 Sports Club of North Korea, Taiwan Power Company from Taiwan (obvs), and a play-off winner.

The AFC confirmed Nepal's participation today after Guam withdrew from the competition. Nepal's success in the recently held AFC Solidarity Cup in Malaysia helped them grab the opportunity.

Probably funding...like anything other sport the island tries to field. Aside from not qualifying for it, this is why Guam's Olympic participants are usually solo sports.

Matao drop out of Asia Cup qualifiers

The Matao has pulled out of the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 qualifiers tournament.

The Guam Football Association decided to pull out of the next round of the tournament’s qualification stage, set to begin in 2017 and run through to 2018, due to “the foreseeable strain on the organization’s financial capabilities,” a news release stated.

“It is with a heavy heart that after deliberation among executives and board members that we have to pull out of the continent’s prestigious tournament at this stage,” said Richard K. Lai, GFA president.

Lai said competing in the preliminary qualification round cost more than $1.5 million, and said it would cost $1.2 million to compete in the next set of matches.

That is unfortunate as I think they were finally getting some good mainland players and locals. This will stall any growth

One of the issues with minnow Asian teams is finances.... Its hard to give them exposure when there is a high chance they will pull out.

Unfortunate for Guam, they actually performed very well in the qualifiers!

Looks like the Guam FA has some explaining to do. After some sustainable success under Gary White, it appears they may be going backwards now that he has departed. Odd that the FA never addressed the players directly.

Disappointing they withdrew especially with some great results.

Better planning and sponsorship should be key for AFC to discuss and teach the lower tier nations if they want the whole federation to develop.

Ouch. I'm guessing most of the players were locals and not pros?
