Actually, he's pretty much our stopper. Only goes into the attack on set pieces (when you're built like that, it oughta be written in your contract that you have to). Started off a little shaky in his first couple of games, but really picked things up during qualifying. His second game against Mexico (2-0 US win, and where that picture comes from) was an extremely solid performance. Absolutely shut down the Mexican attack. I'm trying to think of a good example of a physical (but not dirty-playing) central defender with that kind of athleticism, but it's hard to compare. He's no Maldini, obviously, but he's a young player, and he shows quite a bit of potential. Arena wouldn't have set him as the anchor on our back line if he didn't think Gooch was a quality player.

Yup hes our top central defender right now. Completely shut down Borgetti, and will toss Koller around like a rag doll as we beat down the Czechs on our way to the 2nd round.

We shall see. The question is whether Onyewu's relative inexperience against major international competition (Mexico notwithstanding) will be a setback, or whether or not Toni will be able to stand up to Gooch's physical defending. Like I said, we shall see in June.

If the US make it to the next round they could face Brazil. I think a match up between the Gooch and Adriano would be great. Both of them are built like tanks. Adriano 6'2" and 200lbs Gooch 6'3" 200 lbs, then again Jan Koller(injured 50% chance he will play in the world)who plays for the Czech rep, is 6'8" 227lbs. However see link below, this is a might be a good thing for the US,Italy and Ghana. Bad for Czech Republic.

That's gonna be the big question in everybodys mind. We're really gonna hafta wait and see on that one. Who do I imagine stopping Toni and Gilardino? Onyewu., I have confidence in him, not bocanegra nor gibbs.
Then again Ill hafta see how they preform if they play in some warmup friendlys...

Real question is can they stop Totti???

I see JOB and Mastroeni all over him :D And plus, if Totti is having his period when its time to play the US that'll be good for us.:D

totti is a diffulcult player to mark, if you focus on him, then cassano, camronesi, pirlo can all burn you

Totti isnt just difficult to mark, he is one of the hardest in the world to mark, only Juan Roman and Dinho might be tougher.
Camoranesi and Pirlo dont think so, but Cassano most def.

Koller doesn't look like a forward to me, too awkward and gangly, seems more like the goalie type.

Is he good? Besides going for headers obviously.

Are you kidding?? Kolller is amazing, his shot is a rocket and is also, oubviosly, good in the air. Even his headers are rockets.
