Guerrero is the captain of the team. It's always tough to lose your captain--especially at the last minute like what happened with New Zealand, which meant re-structuring the attack. Guerrero was suspended 2 days before the team flew to New Zealand. Also, he is the only center forward on the team with both a high level of experience and high status in the game (the other forwards are also very talented, but much younger, and haven't played big games like Guerrero has). With Guerrero on the team, Perú is capable of challenging any team in the world. Without him, it becomes more difficult but not impossible.
Guerrero is a warrior (Ironically, pun is intended BTW) and a very important part of the attack. I think people will be surprised to see how Peru will play. They can beat every team in this Group on a good day. But they can also lose to them. Manager Gareca is going to have his work cut out for him since this is new territory for him tactically preparing for a tournament like this.
While I still give the edge to France and Denmark, I wouldn't call Perú "meh". They've been rising since they hired Gareca.
Denmark is IMHO probably underestimated due to how much better specially Eriksen have become on the National team since Morten Olsen left the coaching position ... Sure he's our biggest star by a long shot, and if he gets injured Denmark is going to have a not fun time, but he's not nearly as one-man team with 10 supporters, as other teams built around a single star player, have been
I think Using that one example is a bit skewed. I would say the Argentines have had more of a general influence on Colombian soccer going back to the 50's but that is not my point. I was talking about modern times. Like the last 20 years or so (and in the context of 2018).
Is not just one example. Is known in South america that the Colombian style is similar from the Peruvian.
and with some interesting goings on in the governance of football here it may be a while before we appoint one. FIFA may even end up doing it for us.
In the last 20 years, yes, you're right. In this time span, Colombia has won 1 Copa America, qualified to 2 World Cups, and had their arguably best-ever generation of players. Peru were hideous in both style of play and results. But starting in the 2014 qualifiers, Peru started to regain their style. The results didn't follow but the intent was there. The second half of the 2018 qualifiers finally saw results follow style. Colombia is the better team, but right now Peru is probably the most typically South American in style.
It all fell apart after the coach decided to change a formation that won them the Asian Cup to play three at the back.
Peru have only played 7 matches in Europe in the past 10 years. With 6 loses and 1 win. If they struggled to get past New Zealand away it don't expect much from them in Russia. I think Denmark also have an advantage by playing France last. The French may well go into this game already qualified and won't mind dropping points to the Danes. It may well be this that seperates them from the others and gets them through. Fairly confident that the Aussie can come home with at least 2 points.
Hoping for - France Australia Denmark Peru Fingers crossed Peru exit without getting a point, after the disgraceful antics their fans pulled against the NZ national team.
I hope they go goalless as well. Then I hope FIFA bans them for a few years. What kind of monsters set off fireworks??
Those bastards... Disqualification!! It's South America... you won't know unless you live through a qualifying spell in CONMEBOL...
