    1995/96

I think the top 10 single season primes of the 90s decade could be

    Tier 1
    Ronaldo 1997/98
    Roberto baggio 1992/93
    Rivaldo 1998/99
    Ronaldo 1996/97
    Romario 1993/94

    Tier 2
    Stoichkov 1992/93
    Dennis bergkamp 1997/98
    Luis figo 1999/00
    Savecevic 1990/91
    Alessandro del piero 1997/98

    Honorable mentions to
    (Tier 2.5)
    Eric cantona 1993/94
    George weah 1995/96
    Jari litmanen 1995/96
    Zidane 1997/98
    Micheal laudrup 1991/92
Maybe Alan shearer in blackburns title season run too
(I think he was the best european striker of the entire 90s decade)

Yeah baggio in best physical shape was uniquely marvellous
They dont (or hardly)make players of his ilk anymore

Neymar jr is the only one from his generation (in the sense that he is complete from a offensive standpoint)

In the 90s there was ADP,baggio, rivaldo, bergkamp and others with similar attributes

    And at a (slightly)lower level(cantona,litmanen,weah)
Who were arguably superior to forwards as eden hazard, griezman, dybala etc

I'm tempted and a bit biased to have Del Piero 97/98 in tier 1. Especially with his CL campaign in mind

Interesting, BErgkamp's highest Ballon D'or finish were in 92 and 93. I never watched him play in full so I can't say if he was better then than at Arsenal.

Neither did i watch him playing for Ajax but i do think his 97/98 PL campaign was on of the top dozen league showings of the entire 90s

1998 must of been a great year to be a football fan
Even world cup aside there were SO many quality and creative players at their peak on show
(Ie R9,ADP,bergkamp etc) and others very close to reaching their prime (totti, zidane, rui costa,Beckham, rivaldo, figo, etc)

And even others past their prime but still capable of WC performances
    (Roberto Baggio,micheal laudrup,romario etc)

I think from recent times only 2012 was more competitive
    Messi/ronaldo with 60+ goals

Rooney/cavani/van persie/falcao/ibrahimovic/huntelaar with 30+ goals in all comps

Creative maestros as xavi/pirlo/iniesta/ozil(30 assists for Madrid ) at their peak

And young World class talents as neymar in BRA and hazard in lille with top notch seasons
Even balotelli was arguably world class
Come to think of it 2012 was an absurdly crazy year for forwards

22 years old and the highest ranked player of the 2009/10 club season according to all relevant rating systems

    Scoring 47 goals+16 assists as a false 9.
I dont here enough about this season especially when this was messi at arguably his purest technical level

I think van bastens recent comments smack of arrogance and are a bit silly for a man his age.
There isn't such a thing as objective truth when it comes to such a subjective matter (rating 2 elite all timers)

When you go back in time though just to remind yourself about messi its simply a joke what he was doing on the pitch

A freaking alien to be honest and i think the joint most gifted player this sport has ever seen(along with diego)
Just To be clear messi surpassed him probably 7 years ago Im just talking about technically

Maybe being sandwiched between 08/09 and 10/11 and the fact that his next three seasons (until the injury at PSG) were just out of this world contributes to it being a bit ignored.
It was a great season with some memorable performances that go a bit under the radar.

Carlitos, tagged me, so he wants to know what I think, OK.

For me there are more chances that Eusébio was better or more productive than Cristiano Ronaldo was than Maradona better or more productive than Messi, saying that, Messi and Maradona are tier 1 level of talent. Messi seems to keep his shape in better form tho. (Maradona had his dosis of parties and drugs..)

Now there is also a legion of ignorant Messi fanboys that ignores the context, Messi made his career in a far superior club in terms of world class players and in terms of financial and marketing power (a more globalized football) than Maradona, in a much more off-balanced time (tho I don't go far as calling this a weak era because it is unfair to the players of this generation) and with the referres and rules being much more attentive to fouls, especially more violent fouls... we can even say that Messi was much more protected if compared to Maradona.
Messi's direct runs wouldn't have gone unnoticed by defenders in other times. He would probably have to change his game and adapt.

When we take it all out Messi is still an excellent player, one of the best if not the best, but some idiots really think Lionel would score 40-50 goals if he played in that Napoles in the Italian league in the 80s ... when with Argetina's shirt he had hard time to overcome Diego and arguably never reached the level of Diego in the WC86.

Some even say that he would maintain the same goal average in La Liga as in the Premier League*, when we all saw that Cristiano Ronaldo increased dramatically his goal average in league playing for Real Madrid.
*Maybe he would keep his average, but only if Barcelona with all its world-class players were transferred to there.

But yes Messi is a better talent than Cristiano Ronaldo, and specially he is maintaining his peak (2009-) for longer than the Portuguese (2007-2014), many even forget that the difference at the peak of both (see the my post 55 here) was much smaller than it is today. So if Cristiano Ronaldo is A-level commited athlete and with all of that he has lost his legs a bit - Ancelotti had already realized this in 2013 - surely more than the argentinian in comparative age, what would Messi be from the physical point of view then?

I also have my reservations about Messi's real performances and recognition a few years before 2009, even tho he was a brillant talent back then (post 5, 9 and 13 here).

Don't you reckon he'd be at least half as good?

Messi wouldn't have to score 50 league goals in late 80s early 90s serie A
Half that number along with whatever else he brings is enough

In his peak scoring season 11/12 he scored 50 league goals
Half that is 25 league goals (the most van basten scored in a single season for Milan when serie A was at its peak)
Van basten won his 3rd ballon dor partly for this

But then messi 11/12 was also the most prolific dribbler, throughballer and assister in Europe

Even if messi was literally half as good as he is now playing for Barcelona he has more than enough in his arsenal to be the best in the world(by far) playing for a superclub like Milan under saachi

Playing for napoli is different story
I don't think there is any objective way of proving messi could've taken them to the summit of Italian football like Diego did

    About euesbio
You (criminally)underrate his support cast at benfica
Here and on another of your posts

Benfica won the European cup the season before euesbio joined
The won it again the season he joined and he only played 2 matches in all club competitions

Benfica was a powerhouse smiting arguably the 2nd greatest Barcelona team in history with kubala, czibor, kocsis etc
And they did this without the black panther

There's a point, Messi with all his agility, balance and aceleration alongside with his size, he is 169cm (without forgetting of course his excellent ball control which is helped with his physical constituition as well) with all of these characteristics he will always be your best dribbler, in fact several less talented and physical short guys have also been good/excellent dribblers mostly because of their biotype.

But the impression I got of your comment was that Messi dictated the pace of Barcelona's matches, with all that throughballer, assists stuff etc. The truth is that behind the spotlight he still had a Xavi at the peak of the powers with 23 Deep Progressions for 90 minutes controlling the match and providing the basis for all the Argentine's high-risk passes and runs going forward.

23 Deep Progession for 90 is most likely something never seen before or after this season.

Fact is the system implemented by Guardiola optimized all the skills the argentinian had, who, in addition, made a move of demarcating territory for the best positions, it wasn't bad at all, it actually showed ambition.

Messi playing for Napoles vs the best teams in Serie A and Europe would be more like this:

But with more hard fouls... than you average La Liga 2010's random compilation.

PD: I'm not underestimating Benfica, it was perhaps the best and most consistent european team in the 60s, but it still doesn't have the quality and support that today's superclubs have to compite in Europe, let alone the prestige. Having said that in a short time at the Portuguese club, Eusébio made himself present and didn't looked out of place, in fact Eusébio became their biggest star in a short period of time. That is a sign of talent.

If you put a prime Messi in Pep's Man City with the pace, movement, cutbacks and passes of KDB he will score at roughly the same rate, matter of fact, if you put Cristiano in his prime in the Liverpool of the last seasons, playing the direct football Klopp does and being targeted by crosses from Trent and Robertson and accurate long passes by VVD he will score at the same rate.
Cristiano's last season at Man United saw his position change after Berbatov's arrival, otherwise you have a 42 goals in 49 games in his optimum position and when you account for his natural progression as a player in Madrid there's no surprise his numbers improved. A 25-26 year old is often times better than his 22-23 year old version.

    Yes

To say somebody holds ill intentions for holding a legitimate different perspective is dumb

Messi is a better/more complete/more talented footballer than Cristiano ronaldo in my personal opinion
On the flip side there are concrete arguments one could make in favour for Cristiano ronaldo

Such as him being a ballon dor podium player for 3 different teams and in 3 different leagues
    The champions ko record

Its not a dumb or retarded opinion to hold Cristiano ronaldo on an equal or even slightly higher standing as lio
His Dutch compatriot Ruud gullit seems to think so
Does gullit know anything about football (or does he hold ill intentions lol)

Cristiano Ronaldo averaged ~4.3 shots per 90 minutes when he scored 31 Goals in the Premier League. However, in his first five seasons at Madrid in La Liga, Cristiano Ronaldo averaged ~7.6 shots per 90.

About Messi at Pep Mancheter City, so why not think about Maradona in any Guardiola team too?

I watched the game, and honestly, both teams are a shadow of their former selves. This might actually be the worst Madrid/Barca team in a decade.
