Without sounding too jingoistic, the vast majority of the best players in the pre-war era were British.

Given that by 1914 football had been played for 50 years that is probably natural.

I'm agree. Some non-English footballers could be:

    - Nils Middelboe (Denmark)
    - Bok de Korver (Netherlands)
    - Imre Schlosser (Hungary)

How good was Belgian centre-half Charles Cambier? He became the captain of his NT and was one of the most capped players from his time, despite suffering an injury which sidelined him for two years. The IFFHS says he was considered the best Belgian footballer before World War I, but where woud he rank overall?

EVERTON : Milward, Chadwick, Geary, JACK TAYLOR, Settle, Sharp, ALEX SANDY YOUNG

MAN UTD : Cassidy, Wall, Turnbull and the great BILLY MEREDITH

    LIVERPOOL : Cox, Raybould, Parkinson

I'd be interested to know where you are getting some of these names from. No doubt some very good players here, but (Meredith aside) not sure they're the best.

The absolute top players of the pre-war era in England were (and I'm certain to miss quite a few here):

    Steve Bloomer
    Vivian Woodward
    Billy Meredith
    Bob Crompton
    G.O. Smith
    Nuts Cobbold
    Billy Bassett
    Sam Hardy
    Ernest Needham
    Alex Raisbeck
    Frank Barson
    Charlie Roberts
    Tinsley Lindley
    John Goodall

I think that at least Harry Hampton must be put in this list. In what clubs played these players of your list ?

Sam Hardy - Aston Villa and Liverpool
    Ernest Needham - Sheffield United
    Alex Raisbeck - Liverpool
Frank Barson - Barnsley and Manchester United
    Charlie Roberts - Manchester United
Tinsley Lindley - Many, including Corinthians, Nottingham Forest, Notts County
    John Goodall - Derby County

From the list of spanish players. I'd emphasized as really greats the likes of R.Petit (French), Alcantara & Pichichi. But they were more post WWI players

I must be added "maestro" Jose Piendibene (Uruguay).
The best south american player of the ancient times.

Like I said before, I'm genuinely interested as to where you are getting these names from as the best pre-WWI British players?

You're right Roy! Though I usually associate Buchan with the inter-war period primarily, hence his omission.

Charles Buchan's Football Monthly was a superb publication by all accounts. I've got the reproduction book which came out a couple of years back as well as some old editions.

One of England's really under-appreciated legends (and a REAL gent) due to WWI cutting into his club career and the fact that he didn't get along with several members of the FA ISC, Charlie Buchan:
