    GALATASARAY fans have paid tribute to Graeme Souness before their Istanbul derby with Fenerbahce.

    In 1996, the ex-Rangers and Scotland icon famously planted a Gala flag in the centre-circle after his side's win over their fiercest rivals.

    It remains one of the most iconic moments in Turkish football history and 18 years on, his antics were brought back to life at the Turk Telecom Arena.

    Gala fans unveiled a quite superb tifo behind one of the goals, featuring Souness planting the flag on an outline of a pitch.

    Here is the Scene from the 1996 year of the CUP Finale about Galatasaray victory and coach Souness epic action vs Arch rival at the rival field middle of the pitch after the final whistle:

      • The former Liverpool player nearly sparked a riot after placing a large Galatasaray flag into the centre circle of the pitch of arch rivals Fenerbahce after his side had beaten them.

        Explaining the incident, Souness explained in The Independent: 'The Fenerbahce vice-president had made some smart-arse comments about me being a cripple earlier in the season, and it was just a spontaneous action,'

        'I got the biggest kiss of my life from the president.'

    ...18 years on, the Scottish manager is still being idolised by the fans, so much so that they recreated the moment with choreography ahead of this season's derby.

    An image of Souness planting the flag was projected in a Turk Telekom Arena stand using 'tifo' :

    Galatasaray Remember Iconic Graeme Souness Moment with Amazing Tifo

    [IMG]

    Galatasaray took on fierce rivals Fenerbahce on Saturday, and their fans used the occasion to remember one of the most iconic moments in the Istanbul derby's history.

    After the 1996 Turkish Cup final, Gala's then manager Graeme Souness famously planted a club flag in the centre of Fener's pitch after victory.

    Judging by the display above, the club's fans still hold the Scotsman in high esteem a full 18 years later.

    The display seemed to inspire the current crop, as they won the match 2-1

    ps;

    Here is a video about that historic immortal epic action by Souness from that special night:
