Josef is probably out of the chase. However, I was just checking the stats. If you deducted the PK goals from each of those 3 players they would each be sitting on 21 goals. I know it ultimately doesn't mean anything for the Golden Boot, but I thought Vela had score more from the run of play.

Carlos Vela 29 goals (8 PKs)
Zlatan Ibrahimovic 27 goals (6 PKs)
Josef Martinez 26 goals (5 PKs)

Zlatan does have 3 more game winning goals.

^ I've always thought that penalty kicks should be discounted in considering the league scoring title. Go get real goals, not just shots from the spot that you probably didn't even draw the foul for to begin with.

People do miss penalties. Although I agree the tie breaker should goals scored not from PK's.

Last time I checked PKs count for 1 on the board just like non-PKs. This isn't a beauty contest, this is about who scored the most goals.

    You are correct, they do.

My point is simply that, if you're going to give an award for the person who scores the most goals, it seems silly that some of the people competing for it are given a large advantage by getting to take several penalty kicks each year. It's also not a hard thing to edit out of the totals.

That's just my opinion, however. The league obviously feels differently and it's not something I lose a lot of sleep over.

Unless the players fighting for the Golden Boot are on the same team any one can step up to take PKs. If the Golden Boot competitor isn't good enough to be the one to take them for their team it says something about his goal-scoring ability.
