* Ed Johnson’s hat trick was the eighth in U.S. MNT history, and the first for a player entering a game as a substitute. The hat trick was also the third for the U.S. in World Cup qualifying history, with the previous two being a four-goal game from Aldo “Buff” Donelli vs. Mexico on May 24, 1934, and three-goal game from Peter Millar vs. Bermuda on Nov. 2, 1968.

* Ed Johnson is just the third player in U.S. MNT history with as many as four goals in his first two games, behind Aldo “Buff” Donelli’s five in 1930 and even with Bert Patenaude’s four in 1928. No other player has more than two.

* Ed Johnson is also the third player in MNT history to score goals in his first two World Cup qualifying appearances, joining Brian Ching (who accomplished the feat just six weeks ago) and Eric Wynalda (who did it in 1996).

* Amazingly, of the eight players with hat tricks in MNT history (no one has more than one), four of them were scored in the players first two games.

* Only one player in MNT history has scored in his first three caps, something which Ed Johnson will have a chance to do the next time he takes the field for the U.S. (Alexander Rae scored in his first three matches for the U.S. from Sept. 12-26, 1937, all against Mexico.)

* The six-goal margin of victory was the fourth largest in U.S. history, falling one shy of tying the record. (Curiously, it was the first six-goal victory in U.S. history, as the team has previously recorded three seven-goal victories and five five-goal victories.)

* The U.S. previously scored as many as six goals in a game seven times (one eight-goal game, two seven-goal games and now five six-goal games).

* Four of the eight players to have a hat trick have scored in their first two games.

I agree also. I've seen a few comments on how he's scored all his goals without playing a full game. However, oddly, if he had played the full game, I don't think he would have scored nearly as many. Against Panama we got our last 3 goals (2 by EJ) in like the last 5 min of play. Their team was just done at that time.

That's not to say that it wasn't an impressive performance by him. Heck it was great. Just saying we shouldn't get ahead of ourselves and call him our savior. We need to see if he can do it against a team that's fresh and believes it can beat us. Hopefully he'll be able to perform against them.

great job by Eddie, not taking anything away from him, you can only play the team that is front of you. He got in great position in front of the goal agaist a team that neither marked him nor defended the cross. He know exactly where to be in that situation.

Ok, here is knock. He was breaking toward the goal with the ball, with only the goalie in front of him and some pressure from the side. He shoots it right at the goalie. This happened about two other times in the match with different US players. We need to start finishing these. What good is speed if we choke at the moment of truth. However we are quite good on the volleys and headers in front of the goal. I guess we should use the speed to get down the wings and make the cross for the one touch shot.

we need to learn to chip the keeper in the 1v1 situation also. johnson had a perfect opportunity for that on that play. as did mathis 2 games back.
