Pump the brakes, he's in 3 Liga. If his team get promoted or he moves to a 2nd division team for next season i'll be for it but not this season.

I try not to comment too much on national team derails, but why not call him up for a meaningless game against good enough competition to see if his talent might translate? Might help put him on the radar and get his career back on track while simultaneously looking at another possible piece to keep an eye on heading towards Russia.

I sometimes am against calling up players breaking into the first team, but it is a third div team. If it messes him up there, he was not USMNT material anyway.

    True.

He is playing at a low(ish) level, but before his injury nightmare he was regarded as one of the better prospects in the America pool. In addition, his club are one of the better teams in that division and he's an ever-present: he's started all 14 league games, and gone less than 85' only once (76' in a game that was already wrapped up) scoring twice and delivering three assists. Good numbers for a specialist LW.

That's not screaming international quality, but it does suggest that he could play in BL2, which puts him at on-the-fringes-of-the-US-MNT level, About the same as Wood when Klinsi gave him his first call-up. Giving him 30' minutes against, say, either Irish team or Croatia and seeing how he does can't do any harm and could do some good

i think his is a special case for several factors.

    1. most importantly .....he showed very well with the USMNT this cycle. vs. czech rep and ecuador. this isnt someone who has never shown up to the level of international soccer....and at a position where the pool is verrrry thin.
    2. If he was a 3rd div player who had never played internationally before i would agree that he should have to do better in his club career before earning a call.
    3. he was injured while playing for the USMNT.....to me, at least give him a game or two back with the team to show if he can play the way he did previously. players represent international teams and put their careers on the line...so, i think it would be proper for the national teams to look out for players like this who were injured while on national team duty...to me, there is a responsibility there.
    4. it is SUCH a meaningless game....there will never be a more perfect game to do this guy a solid than this one....and there are few players who could stand to benefit more from such a game than him. i would also call up other players that might benefit from such a game like hyndman, aron johansson, shane oneill, keaton parks, lynden gooch etc etc....maybe not all but some. to me it is a perfect game to give players that are maybe being overlooked by their clubs or in tough situations a bit of a boost.
    5. it is the perfect opportunity to help him get out of 3rd liga purgatory. if he shows well vs portugal....no guarantees....but there is A CHANCE he looks great out there.....then i cant see him staying in 3rd liga long. otoh, without such a chance....he is looking at at least 2 years of solid play before getting back to a big league, most likely.
    6. he's a special talent in the pool...he actually played for dortmund's first team. like in a real match. how many players are in the pool could say something like that?
    7. there's nothing to lose and everything to gain: it either goes 2 ways....he totally sucks or he's good. if he sucks, what has been lost by playing him? absolutely nothing!!! if he does well, it will help him tremendously. i cannot think of a single better possible outcome from this game than showing the world that joe gyau is better than a 3rd div player from this game....so why not give it a chance to happen?
    8. i think maybe some who are using his 3rd division status against him being called up is a way of protecting the image of the national team...cuz they think it makes the national team look bad to play a 3rd divsion player. it doesnt. it doesnt matter what division he is in. he's clearly physically superior to the 3rd division players hes playing with from the clips. besides. the rep of the national team cannot get lower than it is now no matter who takes the field....theres no image to ruin.

from his clips he looks fast and like he still has it and lately he's been pumping in the goals and assists....to me, the injuries are clearly the only reason he's where he's at....forcing him to work his way back up for a few years before even considering him again is akin to treating him like a criminal, imo. he sacrificed for the national team so the national team should have his back. imo.

Can someone explain what “Dorfklub” means and if it’s as hilarious as it sounds?

"Village Club" used with a sense of pride on one hand, making fun on the other.

    And Joe scores

Kid was one of my favorite prospects prior to his injury, and thought he had a legit shot at breaking through at Dortmund.

25 now, but if he can regain is abilities, he has a shot to be a player for us and a good club

Who knows? Stranger things have happened, but first and foremost his talent was, like Charlie Davies, his explosive first few steps. Once that is gone, he's a professional soccer player with good pace. Don't get me wrong, I would sell my left arm to play professional soccer at any level, but I don't think we're going to see him reach his pre-injury ceiling.

well he's making team of the week, scoring goals/assists as a winger in 3 bundesliga....and from the clips he looks physically way ahead of the competition in 3 bundesliga....so he clearly could play in 2 bundesliga at a minimum, imo. personally i think his cieling is still very high b/c he doesnt seem to have lost anything athletically despite the injuries - which is why i would really like to see the us soccer program throw him a bone a la bobby wood and help him career-wise with callups.

I’d just like to see him on TV with a move to MLS at this point. If he was 22 or younger I would think he could regain some his form.

It is incredibly sad though to think what he could have been.

He'd have to be getting paid at least 120K to be able to have the standard of living he is getting right now.

Even if he is only getting 60K Euro a year, he probably has free meals, rent and a free car. So his take home is much more.

umm gotta think he would def get at least 120k in MLS...and at this point, yeah....i would say see what opportunities are there at the end of this season in europe...and if nothing substantial, is available come home to MLS.
