German attendance boom

There's been talk of Hertha getting a smaller, but football-specific stadium. But since I don't understand German, I don't understand what its about

I´ve not heard anything about it and frankly, I can´t believe Hertha would be able to afford moving out. Whatever the league position there are 3-4 sold out games in Berlin.

 

Hertha's president Schipphorst is thinking about an own stadium sometime in the future. But that won't happen within the next 10 or more years as Hertha is bound to the Olympiastadion.

 

That would definetly break the current record they are close to setting.

 

Or imagine Wehen or Hoffenheim in the first league...actually that'll probably be so next year

 

I expect Hoffy to make a push for the 2009-10 season, and push real hard.

Will they fill the 30,000 seats?

 

It will go the same way like in Leverkusen, Wolfsburg etc.. The first couple of years they spend thousands of tickets to schools, company workers etc.. After some years they will have something like a small fanbase and can lower the number of free tickets.

I don't think the slight increase at Wolfsburg or Leverkusen has anything to do with Beckham.

It should be noted however that the numbers for the Bundesliga in there are slightly higher than those given by the DFL.

Take a look at the increase of Wehen/Wiesbaden's attendance rate.

 

Wow! That is amazing. Heck I was impressed with Hoffenheim.

 

It's not that hard if you start out at pretty much zero . Hell, VfL Wolfsburg II's increase SHAMES Wehen (most comes from one single game, but whatever) .

That was expectable. With Cologne and Gladbach 2 powerhouses made it back up.

On the other hand the 2. Bundeliga seems to have lost quite a bit of ground in attendance numbers. Last weekend there were 4 or 5 games with attendances below 8000...

 

One reason are the promoted teams and their average attendances
(poor if you conside the stadium capacities):

FSV Frankfurt 7.832 (capacity: 52.300)
Rot-Weiß Oberhausen 7.171 (capacity: 21.318)
FC Ingolstadt 04 5.855 (capacity: 11.418)
Rot Weiss Ahlen 4.519 (capacity: 10.498)

How big are these cities (other than Frankfurt)?

I would guess they are pretty small.

 

Oberhausen 217000
Ingolstadt 120000
Ahlen 50000

So I can see why Ahlen doesnt draw a lot.
Oberhausens problem is that theyre in the middle of the Ruhrpott, so even in their city most people will probably support one of Dortmund, Schalke, Duisburg, even Essen...
Ingolstadt is as plastic as can be, same goes for SV Wehen.

I dont know what the heck is the problem in Fürth tough, theyve been playing good seasons for years, have 115000 citizens and yet only draw an average of slightly above 5000...
