Re: Genoa prepare bid for Benfica starlet Adu

I take everything Tribal says with a grain of salt. But if I recall Genoa did have some interest in Freddy a year or so ago. They have a nice young squad and finished mid-table after promotion Freddy could help there. But I highly doubt Freddy is going anywhere. He will see significant minutes next season.

They're quoting Corriere della Sera, which is very reputable.

Let's not forget that he'll qualify as a local in Italy under the Cotonu.

Genoa is a level or two below Benfica but in a major flight now.

Nothing wrong with the move, if Flores doesn't rate Freddy.

Low-tier in Serie A is a good way to get experience.

This rumor made it to a couple Italian sites yesterday. As I wrote on the Benfica thread, one of the rumors was worded to make it look like Freddy reached out to Genoa. But I doubt it.

Wow, they were in Serie C1 just two years ago (as the result of a match fixing scandal).

If there's any truth to this, a loan deal might be great. Either way, Adu needs major minutes to continue with his developments.

Getting 10/15 minutes per game with Benfica is not good for a player of this caliber.

I was thinking the same thing although his absence for pre-season training due to the Olympics may prove to be troublesome in that respect.

Then he should skip the Olympics.

I'd honestly rather have Freddy at Benfica unless this is a sign they're not too interested in giving Freddy a fair shake. I have no idea why, because from watching his play this Summer I think it's fair to say he's one of the most talented players on their current roster.

Still, I wouldn't mind a move to Genoa at all. At worst Freddy would be up against more consistent competition in a much better league. No European play, but it'd be a good place to spend a year or two.

Hmm... I'm not to sure about that. It's pretty crowded up top at Benfica, and Freddy is the least experienced.

Also, he will be an Olympian, meaning he probably will join the squad later. I feel like the Olympics has it's pro's and con's. Pro's being if we make a nice run and he has a good tournament, he can atleast generate enough buzz to warant consideration or a decent loan (like genoa, who has probably watched him play vs. Spain/Argentia). If the US has a pedestrian tournament, and Adu doesn't shine, It probably puts him on the other end of the spectrum.

All and all, I've been impressed by Fred's fearlessness and technical ability. Also, I think he his soccer "IQ" has risen considerably since making the switch from the MLS. I only wish he could grow another 3 inches and put on another 25 pounds, because if he did, he would probably have bigger clubs salivating...

I know ... 'twas almost 30 years ago for me.

I do like the Italian coastline more than the cities though.

I don't know if this one has any legs at all, but it would be an awesome loan move if it is decided that Freddy won't see any time at Benfica this year.

    :D

Genoa salami is strictly an American invention, it doesn't exist here.

Rumors about Adu are floating in Genoa too, I don't know if this deal makes sense though, our coach seems keen on players already having serie A experience only and we are pretty crowded in the attacking midifielder department (Gasbarroni, Leon, Sculli, Di Gennaro, we are buying Palladino)....we'll see.

    Cotonou.

Freddy's Ghana connections make him a "localized" player, who's not counted agaunst the 5 non-EU limit in Italy (or Spain or France).

In that case, I hope he stays at Benfica because he needs to be playing AM or support striker. There's much more of a chance at Benfica with Rui Costa retired and lack of established strikers after Cardozo/Gomes. He's not a winger so if that's what Genoa wants then they should look elsewhere.

Sorry to interrupt, but Genoa is a port town and not a very pretty one at that. I prefer Lisbon.

Wherever happens he needs to play in the Olympics.
