Hi American friends, I'm french and I want to know what is you perception of the french football/soccer.

Do you think that is a good, a bad, a boring or a spectaculare soccer/football, and what's your favorite french team(s), favorite french player(s)...
Can you watch Ligue 1 in your Amercian TV? Because in Europe, this is not the most popular soccer/football league, Europeans people prefer the Premier League in England, the Calcio in Italia, La Liga in Spain and BundesLiga in Germany..

    Sorry for spelling mistakes :D

Two of their key players, Matuidi & Payet, will probably leave which is a necessity for Saint-Etienne if they want to start signing new players since they still have burdens like Sanogo in their roster. They are trying to find cheap signings. For example, they tried to swap Riviere with Tabanou and now, they are getting Sinama-Pongolle on loan. It's not a proof of ambition.
All French clubs - except PSG - are struggling in terms of money, yet it's kinda worrying for Saint-Etienne. They should be careful not to go down again.

Talking about Saint-Etienne reminds me of Alex. Everyone remember his first entrance in a L1 (it was probably still D1 at that time...whatever) Match. Too bad his loan at PSG was a failure.

dijon will have to add a bit of capacity to get their park homologated, but as toopil pointed out they're unlikely to get the renovation we see here unless they show they're in L1 for the long run, and can even shoot for europa league, because there's no other need for that nice a stadium. that said dijon is much bigger than auxerre and could well become the guiding light in bourgignon football.

the lake geneva entry is a hodgepodge of smaller clubs who will have to use a stadium that belongs to none of them... in Annecy. if you've ever driven in that region you'll know that it will be hell on earth for their fans to get to matches and they'll probably be the most relieved when they go back down. as for Ajaccio, their stadium has never even been suitable for L2 play but there's so much shady dealing in corsica that a simple promise to (one day) consider (maybe) fixing it up (a little) is enough to get a blind eye turned.

govou's on his way there too!

So Payet is in Lille now. I want to see how well he does. He wont be able to fill Gervinho's shoes but I am a Payet fan and want him to do well and get call ups from Blanc. Looks like they are about to sign Park from Monaco as well which is another good move.

Park is the better replacement for Gervinho but I wouldn't expect the same goal output. We'll see what Payet can do now that he's on a title contender. I don't have my hopes up.

I have a question, guys. Do French teams care about selling jerseys ? I know Real Madrid thats all they care about but it doesnt seem like French teams care. Marseille not against getting rid of Lucho and he's their only player who's jersey people want to buy! Who wants to buy an Amilfitanio jersey?! Bordeaux has no one who can sell shirts. Lyon has Lisandro, Cris, had Toulalan and PSG will sign some big names who's shirt people will buy.

i really like Corchia ! welcome back to ligue 1 i smell call ups world class right back!

I dont think they ever make decisions based on that alone because the potential rewards are still pretty small. You could argue that Lyon wanted to sign Gourcuff to sell shirts but really how many shirts do Lyon sell? Its not like teams in the EPL where those kind of decisions could mean millions of dollars worth of revenue around the world.

Yes I do remember the signing of Gourcuff was about signing a "brand" and that included shirts but since he's sucked I dont think he's selling many shirts. They fired the guy who was reponsible for the Gourcuff brand didnt they ? Perhaps one of the reasons France is so far behind everyone else in marketing is because they dont take this stuff into consideration.

yeah but I think its kind of good in a way too. all the artificial hype that teams like Man U and Real Madrid try to create is kind of nauseating. For example when they buy some unknown chinese player to let them rot in the reserves just to sell jerseys in Asia. annoying.

I just think clubs should put some importance on it thats all. For example Bordeaux is supposed to be a big club and yet I cant think of one player they have who's jersey I'd want to buy/wear or that anyone would for that matter. Lucho sells jerseys regardless of what you think of him as a player.

i doubt jersey sales will ever be that big a moneymaker for french clubs. the sponsorship deal in itself is appreciable income but i expect that volume aside, the cut adidas gives OL is nothing like what RMCF gets on each shirt.

a very big proportion of shirt sales directly linked to a player come in the first few days following the signing. for example, my son has a black jersey with BAROS 7! the same engouement accompanied the signings of elber, keita... even marc crosas! and of course gourcuff. then there are the unusual cases, example mounier. for some reason the lolita division just couldn't get enough of him (before that it was tiago) and his was one of the names you could get off the rack at the OL store.

in the case of younger fans the color often motivates a purchase; that's the reason why so many jerseys we consider absolutely horrid come out each year.

the huge majority of jerseys however, at least for real local fans, are for the club, basta. if they're personalized it may be with the new idol's name and number, but no more often than with a proven favorite (cris, toulalan, licha, govou when he was here), with the fan's own name, or with "fier d'être lyonnais 69"... which you can always get off the rack.

Julien Faubert Will Spend EPL Offseason in Orlando
    [IMG]

The Orlando City players got a surprise at Monday’s training session. A new player joined the Lions for training, and is planning on spending the next few weeks with the team.

Julien Faubert, a veteran of both the English Premier League and Spain’s La Liga, has an offseason home in Orlando. He has joined the Lions for offseason training. The French international is currently under contract with West Ham United, and has seen time on loan with Real Madrid. Faubert’s presence gives the Lions a great example of what it takes to be a Premier League regular.

“He came in today without fuss,” said Head Coach Adrian Heath. “He showed up, put in his work, and that was that. He’s a great example for our players to follow.”

Also joining the Lions soon is Stoke City midfielder Salif Diao. The Senegal international arrives over the weekend and will spend approximately 10 days training in Orlando.

“What they see is the level you have to be at to reach the highest levels of play,” said Heath. “These players are role models for our lads. The more the merrier as far as I’m concerned.”

Gourcuff, aside, I'm glad that Lyon doesnt try to sign players just for their jersey sale worth. I mean if a player is really good, and he becomes a huge star because of his value on the pitch, and then by extension he sells a lot of shirts, then great. but dont bring over some Beckham wanna-be pop-star because the teeny-boppers in Japan think he's so sexy.
