HT in Brno and we trail Jablonec 0-1. I didn't get video until halfway through, but it's been very end to end since then.

Jablonec's goal was good though, Eliáš was facing away from goal at the top of the box and chipped it overhead towards the back post on what I assume he meant as a pass, but he placed the chip perfectly and it went in off the far post.

Just sets up another Brno comeback in the 2nd half.

    FT 1-4 (6,572 attendance)

Scoreline is very harsh considering we had a few more chances than they did, but the difference is their goalkeeper made a couple of big saves and ours didn't stop anything. It was 1-2 in the 80th minute when they caught us on the counterattack a couple of times while we pressed to equalize, which is really they way Jablonec likes to play. Oh well, we're still in the top half of the table, but I am a bit worried about our GK and lack of depth up front.

    Other final scores this week:

Sparta 3 - České Budějovice 1 (I believe this was the final match of Sparta's crowd ban)
    Teplice 0 - Příbram 0 (2905)
    Sigma Olomouc 1 - Hradec Kr. 1 (4751)
    Dukla 2 - Slovácko 2 (1928)
    Ml. Boleslav 1 - Slavia 0 (3726)
    Slovan Liberec 1 - Jihlava 1 (2853)
    Banik Ostrava 1 - Plzeň 3 (9800)

Attendance seems to be overall down a bit this week, most likely due to the hot weather.

Injury news from last weeked, Daniel Kolář has a small fracture in his fibula that will keep him out until at least late October. This is National Team news also, although I think this a much bigger loss for Plzeň honestly. Plzeň are already missing Malakyan on the wing, so some injury issues early in the season for them.

Sparta Praha have moved to the top of the table with a 1-2 road win against Jablonec today, a big early season result for them. They also pulled it off with out starting Kadlec or Hušbauer who should be rested for the Feyenoord match, and hopefully Krejčí will be recovered in time for that as well.

The goal of the week came from Josef Šural of Slovan Liberec, a young player that is off to a good start this season with 5 goals in 5 matches. Liberec defeated České Budějovice 0-2 on the road.

Brno put in a disastrous performance last Thursday.

    The results:
    Jablonec 1 - Sparta 2 (5958)
    Plzeň 2 - Ml. Boleslav (9685)
    Jihlava 1 - Olomouc 1 (3590)
    Slovácko 2 - Teplice 1 (4042)
    Hradec 1 - Ostrava 1 (5120)
    Slavia 5 - Brno 0 (6163)
    České Budějovice 0 - Slovan 2 (2920)
    Příbram 1 - Dukla 1 (1875)

Jihlava has 5 draws in 5 matches o_O.

    The table:

    1. AC Sparta Praha 5 4 1 0 12:5 13

    Friday night match

    Teplice 0 : Jablonec 4

Tough times for Teplice, they are really struggling this season, only 3 goals in 6 matches. Jablonec on the other hand have are looking like contenders for a top 3 finish so far this season.

I have to admit I haven't followed Czech football very closely in a while...but isn't the attendance at Slavia kind of disappointing with the new Eden at all?

Yes it is, but Slavia fans have had a rough few seasons. The club was on the brink of complete financial collapse, and they nearly lost their professional license in May 2011.

They did get a new owner in time to stay professional, and survived last year (finishing 12th) despite the loss of many players. The diminished league position and lingering fan alienation has seen there average attendance fall a few thousand. I imagine the fans will come back if they are able to start competing for titles again.

Thanks for the knowledge. I had the privilege of living in Praha circa 1994-1997...so I thoroughly enjoyed Slavia's brilliant UEFA Cup run, followed by many of the same players leading the national team to the finals of Euro 96. The city and the country have changed SO much since then, guess I can't be shocked the league has changed too. The name changes alone are rather bewildering!

Brno bounced back from our two match skid to defeat Č. Budějovice 3-1.

Slovácko picked up a road wing against Příbram 0-1

No problem, I think Slavia will be a competitor again before long, although they are certainly still rebuilding on and off the pitch. They really had the worst of it the last few years (this article details some of the unsavory circumstances surrounding their financial downfall), but they are off to a decent start this year and still have one of the league's premier youth systems.

Tuning in to watch the Dukla-Plzen match, and it looks (and sounds) like Plzen has more fans in Praha than Dukla does.

The final score was Dukla 1 - Plzen 4. Dukla's one goal also being scored by a Plzen player. (Highlights)

I am impressed by the continued success of Plzen, and happy about it, since it's probably the best thing to happen to Czech football in years. They have sold more key players to foreign leagues than anyone in the past few seasons, and yet they never miss a beat, in fact they often seem to get better since the one player sold often equals 2 players bought. They always seem to find a new young talent to fill in the vacated spots (Rezek->Pilar->Malakyan or Jiracek->Darida). Right now the player to watch is 21-year-old Marek Hanousek, who has taken over the attacking midfield play-maker position with Kolar injured, and has scored a goal in each of the last 3 matches doing so.

The success on the field has also translated to tremendous fan support that has disproved the pessimistic notion that Gambrinus Liga attendance can't be improved. If you have a competent organization and play good football, the fans will come, they draw over 10,000 for almost every home game in a beautifully reconstructed venue. The attendance today at Dukla (a team with little to no fan base) was 3,258, and a significant portion of that were Plzen fans.

Okay, now the rest of the round summary:

    Ml. Boleslav 1 - Jihlava 3
Jihlava have some very promising young players. Stanislav Tecl, who just got called in for the U-21 squad scored a brace bringing his season tally to 5 goals in 6 matches. Ml. Boleslav are really missing Chramosta.

    Brno 3 - České Budějovice 1
Švancara finally realized that as our loan striker we need him to occasionally stay up front instead of dropping into midfield to be a play-maker. He scored a brace, and then Glaser finished off our rather hopeless looking opponent with a golazo. (Highlights, The commentator mentions that the 2nd goal was the first Švancara has scored with his head during his career... he's 34). Negative news is that losing to Jablonec and Slavia (well, more so losing to them by 3 and 5 goals respectively) chased away a lot of Brno fans, attendance was way down.

    Sparta 1 - Hradec 0
Sparta's rested a few top players, but the young Albanian Bekim Balaj still gave them the win on a nice diving header. (Highlights)

    Slovan Liberec 0 - Slavia 0

    Banik Ostrava 1 - Sigma Olomouc 2
It was an exciting match. (Highlights)

    Teplice 0 - Jablonec 4
Jablonec have an exciting team, everyone knows about Lafata's goal poaching prowess, but they have a well rounded attack. Teplice's inability to score goals so far is perplexing, Mahmutovic is a good striker. The 3rd goal was a fantastic free-kick. (Highlights)

    Příbram 0 - Slovacko 1
Příbram continues to suck, and based on the crowds, nobody continues to care. Good to see Slovacko bouncing back from a slow start. (Highlight)

And it the 6 week mark (20% of the way through the ridiculously short Gambrinus Liga schedule), the table looks like this:

    1. AC Sparta Praha 6 5 1 0 13:5 16
    2. FC Viktoria Plzeň 6 4 1 1 15:6 13
    3. FK Baumit Jablonec 6 4 1 1 14:5 13
    4. FC Slovan Liberec 6 3 2 1 10:4 11
    5. Zbrojovka Brno 6 3 1 2 9:13 10
    6. SK Sigma Olomouc 6 2 3 1 7:5 9
    7. FC Vysočina Jihlava 6 1 5 0 10:8 8
    8. SK Slavia Praha 6 1 4 1 11:7 7
    9. FK Mladá Boleslav 6 2 1 3 6:9 7
    10. 1. FC Slovácko 6 2 1 3 6:10 7
    11. Dukla Praha 6 1 3 2 11:11 6
    12. FC Baník Ostrava 6 1 2 3 7:11 5
    13. FK Teplice 6 1 2 3 3:11 5
    14. FC Hradec Králové 6 0 4 2 5:9 4
    15. 1. FK Příbram 6 0 3 3 3:9 3
    16. Dynamo České Budějovice 6 1 0 5 6:13 3

České Budějovice and Příbram look like good bets for relegation early on, but don't count out Teplice or Hradec who have also shown flashes of truly exceptional ineptitude.

Many people expected a two-horse race between Sparta and Viktoria, and so far that is shaping up. Wouldn't count out Jablonec or Slovan to play spoiler though, especially since the top two will have to balance European and domestic play.

Michal Breznanik has transferred from Slovan Liberec to Amkar Perm (apparently Russia has a later transfer deadline than other leagues).

Liberec's new signings from last summer are yet to make much impact, and they just sold one of their best remaining players. A top 3 finish seeming less likely for them.

Kind of a late/short update this week, I've been traveling/visiting family.

    Jablonec 2 : Příbram 2 (2058)
Disappointing day all around for Jablonec, really should have put their struggling opponents away at home.

    Sigma Olomouc 3 : Slovan Liberec 0 (5285)
Impressive performance by the Hanaci, and last years champions continue to disappoint.

    Č.Budějovice 1 : Dukla Praha 1 (2445)
A non-loss has to be seen as a positive byČ.Budějovice, they have looked dreadful.

    Slavia 2 : Teplice 0 (6304)
The addition of Marek Jarolim didn't reverse the downward slide for Teplice, who look in serious trouble.

    Hradec 2 : Brno 0 (4102)
Two clubs with more fight than ability, and the home-side won. Brno are still well positioned at this point to avoid relegation (this seasons main goal).

    Slovácko 3 : Ml. Boleslav 1 (4122)
Slovácko have really turned it around since their much criticized coaching change, meanwhile Boleslav, preseason picks to be contenders, have struggled with out their young star (Chramosta) and just recently had their manager quit.

    Jihlava 3 : Ostrava 2 (4075 - that's a sellout at Jihlava though)
Jihlava are the only undefeated team remaining, and they have some serious young talent (Tecl with yet another goal). Ostrava, which just celebrated the clubs 90th birthday continue to struggle.

Viktoria Plzeň 1 : Sparta Praha 0 (11,722 - another sold-out or rather over sell for Plzeň)
This budding rivalry had a little more drama injected last weekend. After a week of press about how this rivalry has eclipsed the Sparta - Slavia match, it would be decided by, what even I as someone who far prefers Plzeň to Sparta would call, a bullshit penalty. Limbersky took a dive in the box, and Horvath converted. (video highlights) Now both teams will need to turn their focus to the start Europa League this week (although if Sparta wants to take a day off, we Lyon fans would greatly appreciated).

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Sparta president however has certainly not shifted his focus though, instead this may have been the final straw that forced him to bring forward charges of match-fixing and corruption to the FACR, Miroslav Pelta. The evidence goes back far beyond last weekend of course, but the outrage may have caused Sparta to move sooner than originally planned. It doesn't sound good, Mr. Pelta has as of today contacted the anti-corruption division of the police and told the press today roughly "I had said that I trusted all the people in Czech Football today, but now I have serious doubts about some of them." Sounds like this will be a major developing story, as the ongoing saga of Czech football being damaged by corruption sadly continues.

So carried away with the great day for Brno, I forgot the rest:

    Ml. Boleslav 1 : Hradec 0 (3680)
Good result from Boleslav, although the match report makes it sound like Hradec had chances.

    Příbram 1 : Č. Budějovice 1 (1960)
In a battle of teams that will fighting relegation all season, neither is able to take 3 points.

    Teplice 1 : Plzeň 1 (5480)
Much improved by Teplice. Plzeň perhaps with a bit of a let down after the big Europa League win.

    Sparta 1 : Olomouc 2 (7756)
Michal Ordoš is on fire right now (5 goals in last 3 matches), and Olomouc are finally validating my preseason prediction that they are darkhorses to challenge for Europe, I can only assume our old friend Canadian_Supporter is happy somewhere (and RSL Donk less happy). Sparta meanwhile with back-to-back league losses.

    Slovácko 0 : Jablonec 1 (4483)
Very significant 3 road points for Jablonec, thanks to yet another goal from David Lafata. This moves Jablonec into a tie at the top of the table, and with Sparta and Viktoria working a double shift (Gambrinus Liga and Europa League), they may have a chance to capitalize.

    Liberec 2 : Ostrava 2 (3095)
A crucial road point for a struggling Banik, and Liberec continue to fall out of contention.

Dukla 0 : Slavia 0 (4122, probably mostly Slavia fans)

Still a very tight table, and there have been lots of completely unpredictable results early this year.

Couple of big matches this week:
On Friday, Brno travel to Olomouc for a Moravia Derby
And on Saturday, the first "Prague S" derby of the season as Sparta travel across town to take on Slavia in Eden.

No problem, I'm doing what I can to provide information for those here interested in Czech football, and hopefully promoting interest to others. I think that Czech football is showing signs of a renaissance after some down years since the Sparta youth system is producing again and Plzen has proven that an ambitious club can build sustained success and fan interest here. If you have any specific questions about players, clubs, or anything else I'd be happy to do my best to answer.

I've talked a little bit about Sparta's sudden plethora of young talent for the sake of providing information, even though I don't like that club. Well luckily someone else decided to write a detailed blog about it, and in English, so that I won't have to praise their youth development anymore.

Pretty good website, worth bookmarking for any of you that don't speak Czech and want a news source on Czech football
