I have heard rumors that CONMEBOL may change its qualifying procedure for the 2010 World Cup, but nothing has been decided yet. Currently, CONMEBOL teams play 18 qualifiers and the current cycle began in November, 2003. Do any of the posters here think this is too long, or do you like the system as it is now?

I think it would be just as exciting and less of a grind on all the teams if CONMEBOL went with a 2-group system with 5 teams in each group. The top two teams in each group would automatically qualify for the World Cup, while the two 3rd-place teams meet in a play-off to see who has a chance for the half spot. This is similar to Asia's final group stage in qualifying that is being used this year.

As an example, if qualifying ended today, one group for the 2010 cycle would include Argentina, Paraguay, Colombia, Peru, and Venezuela. The other group would feature Brazil, Ecuador, Uruguay, Chile, and Bolivia. One downside to this is the fact that you would get no qualifying matches between Argentina and Brazil (unless they happened to be in same group in other years). Anyway, I was just curious if anyone here thought changes should be made to CONMEBOL qualifying, or if they have heard about changes that may be in the works for future World Cup tournaments.

Congratulations to Argentina on making it to Germany in 2006--good luck to the other teams the rest of the way!

Here's how I would set up CONMEBOL qualifying.

2006-2007 - Copa America preliminaries. High finishing teams get bonus points to start in CA group stage.

June 2008 - Copa America. 2 groups of 5, top 2 advance to semis.

2008-2009 - World Cup Qualifying - 2 groups of 5, top 2 qualify and 3rd place plays off for final half spot

    June 2010 - World Cup.

I think a system like this makes the Copa America more important than it is now, since it's not in the middle of qualifying. Hopefully this leads to each country sending their best 11.

I did the CA preliminaries to make sure that the CONMEBOL teams have meaningful matches in the period between the World Cup and Copa America. Since you can't have real qualifying with only 10 teams, I figure this is the next best thing.

like it was done before? I doubt it...because the top teams did very badly (argentina had to play against austrailia to qualify) and since they control the Conmebol i doubt it will happen

CONMEBOL WCQ is fine the way it is and if FIFA and UEFA dont like it they can simply F*** OFF!!!

Conmebol will not change its WCQ....

As far as Copa America leave it as it is...... when UEFA uses the Euro Cup as a WC place then we shall too..

I'm sick of UEFA and stupid FIFA trying to bullysouth america into their european will... all conmebol has to say is leave us alone or we wont take part in the WC and with no brasil or argentina or no south america the WC is a joke and more important less $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$... that will fix FIFA real good and we will never hear of this again.....

CONMEBOL knows whats right for CONMEBOL and thats that.......

Yeah that may all seem fine and dandy, but unfortunately for us the biggest three crooks in the futbol world are in South America and run Conmebol:
    Leoz (Paraguay)
    Grondona (Argentina)
    Texeira (Brasil)
And these three will not hear anything about losing money from Fifa World Cups because its this money that buys them their big houses and fancy cars, oh and their mistresses... and their Viagra.

I say have 2 groups, top 2 teams qualify and third team who has the best record have a playoff.

That sounds better, only thing is that they would probably place Brasil and Argentina in different groups most of the times.

Leave it as it is. I think the current system has helped the weaker countries (like Venezuela) become more competitive. The more they get to play against each other in a trully competitive situation, the better all the South American national teams will get.

Very interesting point! But I would say not only the weaker teams! Also the two big ones has gotten better IMO, since they have to run for their money! I mean really, Brazil and Argentina HATE losing! Specially against teams they consider weak (everybody else in SA). That is probably why they are consider the two best in the World at the moment!

i personally love the system they use now .....every team plays every team home and away .....couldnt b any fairer.........

the only thing i would like to c changed is the length of time it takes to qualify..........currently it takes i believe 2 1/2 years to qualify ............i would like to c 1 round every month ...........that would shorten the qualifying by 1 whole year.....

if there r other tourney's to do like the copa america or confederations cup than perhaps they could do 2 rounds in the month b4 or after the other tourney's............

i just hate waiting 3 or 4 months between matches.........any thoughts?

Scheduling of games is limited by the FIFA Calendar. There are only so many dates available in any given year.

Previous Conmebol president wasn't a genius either, Teofilo Salinas? Peruvian?. Leoz capitalize the opportunities of his time to help Soccer in SouthAmerica reach unprecedent level. What you say is a gossip, unless you can prove it. I have seen Leoz getting medals of honors from most Congress in S.A. and someother countries as Portugal and Spain. I don't think he will get those for just being a crook. There is a work there that is half for the love of the game and half for politics habilities, and none does anything for free. What they do with their spare time has nothing to do with us. At the end of the day Soccer is a business in the entertainment industry and has a lot of competition. Nuestra pasion es meramente subjetiva. I say so, they are the kings and we are just peasants...
