The run down on possible candidates from this generation of players:

I think the player('s) of the world cup becomes an all time great- the run down from as much as i can remember

    1970- Pele
    1974- Cryuff
    1978- no clue here
    1982- Zico
    1986- Maradona
1990- no one seized the oppurtunity in my opinion!
    1994- Romario/Baggio
    1998- Zidane
    2002-Ronaldo
    2006-???

and for the Germans- Muller and Beckenbauer!

I understand where you're coming from but this is awfully bad timing for this kind of comment:

What were the last two games he payed in again? Oh yeah. The World Cup Semi-final and Final.

Pretty significant contribution in both wasn't it?

And while he hasn't won much in Europe, he has one of the most amazing goal/game ratios in every league he's played in.

He may have dissapointed in the sense that he didn't win La Liga or Serie A yet despite being on 2 super-teams. But he's not to blame, he delivers the goods. Heck if it weren't for his contribution near the end of the season Inter might not even have been in the running for the title they pathetically lost.

The notion that he's not a future all-time great is nonsense.

I believe Di Stefano was picked for a Spain World Cup squad but he was injured and never actually played a match. I'll have to check though.

    All time greats

    Yashin/Banks

    Cafu Beckenbauer Maldini

    Garrincha Maradona Gerson Jairzinho

    Cruyff Pele Eusebio

I did not include Di Stefano, Puskas because I have never seen them play. Also though not a all time great he is certainly a legend there is Just Fontaine whi scored thirteen in one WC but his career was cut short by injury

I did not see him play either(just a few highlights here and there) but you can't deny the fact that he was the best player on the greatest club team ever(Real Madrid of the '50s and '60s). That speaks for itself.

If it wasn't for the injuries that ended his career I would truely believe he would be regarded as the greatest striker to ever play the sport. You would say his name with the likes of Pele, Maradona and Cruyff. Just look at his goal scoring record for Ajax and Milan, it is amazing.

Van Basten... the hero of 1988.

Indeed an all-time great and in his days the best striker in the world.

One of the young Argentine players, likely Saviola.

Argentina, mark my words, will win WC 2006 and 2010 and Saviola will be the big star.

Van Basten was the best striker around when he played- the best I have seen in my life.

    Otherwise: Zidane Zidane Zidane Zidane

his ballcontrol is amazing and i have not seen any mortals handling the ball with the same skills as he.

Michael Laudrup is also one of the greatest players ever- he played for:

    Brøndby
    Lazio
    Juventus
    Barcelona
    Real Madrid
    Vissel Kobe
    Ajax

He was a pure joy to watch
