I hate seeing Luiz go, but for 50M pounds........it's really hard not to agree. I'm not sure we'll be in the market for a CB. We have Cahill and Terry, Zouma will be around starting this summer, Ivanovic can play CB, and we have two of our most prepared prospects at CB - Kalas (who started against Liverpool and did quite well) and Chirstensen, who's been making noises about playing. I think, and this is pure speculation, this means it's more likely we buy a LB (Shaw, Rodriguez or Moreno), since Ivanovic might spend more time at CB, while Azpilicueta will go to RB more often (where he's event better than at LB, and he's very good at LB). Also, this means we're definitely buying at least one CM, possibly two. Fingers crossed for Vidal and Rakitic Again, I hate losing Luiz. But he's not good enough in midfield (if he's the answer, we're asking the wrong question) and if he's not going to start at CB........leaving a 50M player sitting on the bench is silly, especially since we have 3 capable starters there already, with 3 very good prospects. What I don't get is how this factors into PSG's plans w/r/t FFP. Unless they're planning on sending Cavani back to us.......which I would be delighted with. Or one of Matuidi/Verratti (less delighted, but still).
But at Real he didn't have FFP issues to deal with, limited funds or unhappy players. Selling Luiz for 50M means we can buy, say, Shaw and Rakitic for less than what we sell Luiz. How do you not do that? With Mata, I think the issue was more playing time ahead of the World Cup; but the other issue is that he's a #10, and that's a position most teams no longer want. I have no idea what LvG is going to do with United; he's a 4-3-3 manager and none of Rooney, Kagawa or Mata fit that at all. I think United are going to regret that hire in the long run. Also, who did he have that was similar to Luiz?
To put this in perspective, as much as losing Luiz hurts, Vidal wouldn't cost this much. I'd take Vidal over Luiz any day - it's not even close.
Luiz is crazy.. he's a good player no doubt but extremeley overrated. I think it was very clever by Mou to unload him before the world cup. If he plays CB for Brazil I can see some slips of him, maybe cruisal ones
I see someone didn't see the Confederations Cup last summer. Best CB Duo on any International team was DL+TS
I only see you mentioned a striker once in your text. With all those potential buys, who would you be offloading? (I know about Cole).
Lamps and grandfather Eto'O have already been released.. Poor Lamps.. it feels like a slap in the face.
Yes, really. Offloading in what position? We have 4 CMs, one of whom didn't play last season (van Ginkel), while Ramires can't play in a 4-2-3-1 and another one is likely leaving (Mikel). Ba is likely gone, Eto'o is out of contract. If we buy Costa/Cavani, and keep the millstone that is Torres (sigh), then bring back Lukaku, that's 3 strikers.
Hummels is the best German CB at the moment. If you don't rate Luiz over Boateng or Mertesacker, you shouldn't rate him over Hummels.
I definitely sell for 50 mil. I see a lot of Lucio in Luiz. Same type of defending, same ability to go forward. I'm see a lot of team interested in a LB. Felipe Luis is one of the best and not many are interested which is surprising. I think he fits Chelsea perfectly.
Could be just me, but seems people might actually be underrating DL. I saw a development from him at the end of the 12-13 season for Chelsea and the last two years on the NT. He made less mistakes than Thiago Silva. This season, he barely played any CB at Chelsea. Now is he worth 50 million? Certainly not.
He's a very good defender - he's just not worth 50M. I don't agree as much with the Lucio comparison - Lucio was much more pragmatic in his play. Luiz reminds me more of a sweeper, actually. As for Felipe Luis, he'll be 29 at the start of next season. No reason for Chelsea to spend money on a player that old, especially when a lot of his value comes from playing in the same back 4 for at least 3 seasons. If we're looking for a LB in Spain, Moreno makes more sense, but I doubt Mourinho goes for him - he likes taller fullbacks. I'd say Rodriguez or Luke Shaw are the best bets.
