Interesting proposal. http://depor.pe/futbol-internacional/liga-iberica-nuevo-torneo-que-podria-crearse-europa-1058952 How would teams like Porto and Benfica rank in a "Liga Iberica"?
Maybe a prelude of possibilities to retain Catalonia participation in case an independent vote materializes, but I doubt it it would have much support from the Portuguese clubs.
Maybe a superliga would have a chance , but it would have to be a la MLS, with no relegation. Sporting, Benfica , and FC Porto never been relegated . Can't see any of them risk that status by entering into an expanded peninsular league.
surely they would always be comfortably in the top half the league if Bilbao has somehow avoided relegation I am sure those 3 would be ok
Man , Portugal have won deservely the status of 3 spots in UCL , without having a competive league overall. Benfica, Sporting and porto And top. but beside braga ....gil vicente, guimaraes, belenenses, are teams with a very lower level. I think much worse than the relegation zones teams from spians. It would be a risk At the same time, porto create a lot of players, and thta is because you will have the advantage to prove them in easy matches, depsite 3 . If porto will have to face each week villareal, sevilla, valencia, atletico, celta , to prove south american players and formed them wont be so easy.
No??? i visited a los of times portugal while i lived in spain. (galicia) i wondered, about the brazilian infuelnce over there, a lot of people watches brazil srie A, alot of brazilian restaurants. And not like in spain “the sudacas restaurants“ Liked to much, football enviroment great, nice experiencie in Jose Alvarade with the lion !! Always when i talked about my nationailty, all persons talking me about football and not other stuffs like in other euro countries
You're assuming they'd value sporting results over money. If the Portuguese clubs get a taste of that TV money that Spain gets, they'll give up titles all day long. It's all a money move. Only a matter of time before all of Europe consolidates into a real Champions League aka European League.
they would have to make sure that Real and Barca split revenue evenly which is not the case currently in Spain
If you think the dynamics of those clubs would be the same after joining an 'Iberian League' you're awfully deluded. If you believe what you say then you should probably question why they'd ever enter into such an agreement.
I read an article somewhere that said that if any one the old leagues in Europe were to start a league now in modern times they most likely wouldn't pro/relegation either. Different times.
I remember this idea being talked about years ago https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_League_(football)
For one thing, the TV money is equitably distributed in England. Another peculiarity of these clubs is the private ownership rather than societies or membership dominated clubs. These factors vary from nation to nation. For example, there are no current privately owned club in the top tier in Portugal.
