    Philadelphia Union International Friendlies:

2010 - Celtic, Manchester United, CD Guadalahara
    2011 - Everton, Real Madrid
    2012 - FC Schalke 04, Aston Villa
2013 - Pumas UNAM, Stoke City
    2014 - Crystal Palace
    2015 - AFC Bournemouth

Is it me, or has the level of competition we have sought to play in these friendlies seriously dropped off? There seemed to be some real ambition back in the year ZOLO and 2011. After that a steady decline.

As for this game, I'll be there. But, all I can muster is a simple.....YAWN!

Is it our ambition or the teams that are willing to play against us? I am guessing the FO would love to have the revenue from a Real Madrid or Man-U match. The better teams are just not that interested in playing us.

Well....you're not going to get ManU or Real Madrid to play at PPL and the Eagles lost interest in soccer as a whole after 2011. Everton/Villa/Stoke/Palace are "six of one" for me. Bournemouth seems to be aggressively attacking their EPL season. I'm actually looking forward to seeing them.

That said, what the U is doing with the teams they get has diminished. Everton was the best they brought in. They did a long, open practice and everyone on the team was available for autographs after for a very long time. For comparison, Villa's practice was short and only a few players were available again for a short time. I could not go to Stoke or Palace practices so can't compare. Ever better, Everton brought their youth team along a played an open/free game against Union U18s (Curtin coached) before the "real" game. I can remember Steffen, Madison, Francios and Snoh playing. I think Rosenberry and Shane Campbell played as well. And I believe it was one of the few outings for the incredibly ugly uniforms. This type of match would be even better for our Academy kids now (granted the U18's have split for the year and the U16's are still a little busy). But they could have kept the U18s around for something like this.

I wonder if they could have gotten a friendly with Real Sociedad. It seems like the Union FO has a good relationship with David Moyes whose now the manager at La Real. Moyes attended a handful of games at PPL last summer too. Looks like a lost opportunity for our "ambitious" FO. La Real has a good academy setup too.

Too bad they don't have an awesome relationship with Moyes and get him to sign on to replace Curtin.

They should call M'Bolhi up and make him play this game.

I don't think you can really include the ManUtd and Real Madrid games in this list. Sure, the Union played them in friendlies, but I think it was because those teams were doing their summer of soccer tours and the Union just so happened to be the local team.

What? You're not excited to face the 18th, 19th or 20th best team in the Premiership? Get outta here.

I can't believe no one is excited for this? To hear the Bournemouth fans this is how I imagine this team has been given to us...

I'm interested to see this attacking style that is talked about so much. If Christian Atsu is playing, that will bring out the African fans. Still I could have midweek trek to Chester fatigue by then.

And Joe Banner really did all the leg work to set them up. The games were really run by the Eagles....not the Union FO.

Don't forget the March 2013 game a few weeks into the regular season against Pumas UNAM. It was a 1-0 Union win on a Marfan goal assisted by Wheeler, before he was converted to a CB.

I'll go if I have nothing to do. Things to do might include watching Golden Girls reruns on Hallmark.

So this may be canceled as USSF needs to bend over for the Red Bulls.
