Goodbye 3rd DP? MLS is reportedky looking into eliminating the 3rd DP spot, or capping the amount that can be spent on it, in exchange for adding to the ever increasing TAM pile. I've been told by multiple sources that MLS is discussing either eliminating the third Designated Player or putting a cap on how much teams can spend on the third DP. If either change is put in place, MLS would almost certainly add more TAM. Why? Details in my latest video. pic.twitter.com/sLCxnsCf7G— Sam Stejskal (@samstejskal) September 21, 2018
I think it would be better in the long run for clubs. If a 3rd DP has injuries, suspensions or possible callups, many teams could be weakened. You can strengthen your roster with 3 more players by increasing the overall salaries of players.
I would love to see this, just to see LAG (and fans) complain that Atlanta, LAFC and Toronto are being favored.
True. But how many teams use the 3 DPs and how many don't? Best thing would be to increase TAM and leave the DPs as they are. If a mediocre owner still wants to continue to have one or two DPs that should be on him not the others that want to take full advantage of all resources available. Cheap will always be cheap. You can increase TAM and get rid of 1 or all DPs, cheap owners will try to get the cheapest players possible either way while the ones that want to improve will try to get the best possible with whatever resources the league allows them to. IMO, the league will be held back by this change instead of continuing to move forward.
Yeah that would actually be a good idea also. Or what they can do , the teams who don't want the third DP, let them get more TAM that won’t be included in the salary cap. If teams don't want to sign another DP, give them more freedom to sign more players that won't necessarily be DP caliber players or won't command DP money. Not sure if it would be fair across the board or not but maybe it will work if it was thought through or analyzed correctly. As it is or was unless they changed the rules again, you had NYCFC paying Villa , Lampard and Pirlo over $17 million a year while you divided $2-3 million among the remaining 24 players on the roster. Not sure how fair that is either.

I think that was more of a marketing strategy. Big names way past their prime yet still decent but way overpaid. Look what Atlanta United and LAFC are doing by taking advantage of 3 DPs and at a lower rate (yet still in the DP range) than what NYCFC did with those players you mentioned. And look at TFC what it was able to do last season and at CCL by taking full advantage of the salary cap. Although in my opinion they could have bought better players than Bradley and Altidore for the amount they are paying each of them and their team would have improved more but that's just me. It is all about using everything available to become better and improve. With this change it will be the opposite. MLS would be holding back the real contenders so they won't separate themselves too much from the mediocre teams who in turn will have a chance to compete at a cheaper rate.
